Abstract

Being old is a biologic process that can not be avoided, where degeneration occurs inmany ways, which finally decreases the function. These cause aging people prone tovarious diseases; including periodontal disease. Prevalence and severity of periodontaldiseases vary in world population. These differences seem to be related with age, sex, socioeconomic, education, and also ethnic and geography. This study was aimed toinvestigate the periodontal tissue of aging Buginese and Mandarnese. Total samples are390 persons (195 Buginese dan 195 Mandarnese). The condition of periodontal tissuewere checked using CPITN from WHO. Of 195 samples, 88 samples of Buginese and 55samples of Mandarnese were edentulous. The result showed periodontal disease ofBuginese were bleeding 2.8%, tartar 39.25%, pocket of 4-5 mm depth, 50.47%, andpocket of 6 mm depth, 7.48%. Periodontal disease of Mandarnese ethnic were bleeding2.14%, tartar 53.57%, pocket of 4-5 mm depth 21.43%, and pocket of 6 mm depth22.86%. Therefore, the need for periodontal treatment for aging Buginese were brushingteeth instruct 100%, prophylaxis 97.19%, and restorative 7.46%. Aging Mandarnese;were brushing teeth instruction 100%, prophylaxis 97.85%, and restorative 22.86%.

Abstract

The main function of teeth is chewing, whereas its capabilities depends on amount ofteeth remains. High teeth loss in elderly can compromise this chewing function, resulting in inadequate nutrition intake. Analytic epidemiology study of relationshipbetween dental status, diet pattern and nutrition intake in elderly of Buginese andMandarnese took 424 sample (Buginese 206; Mandarnese 216). Buginese dentalstatus showed higher prevalence of tooth loss 0-10 than Mandarnese (24.5%:18.1%),as for tooth loss 11-20 and 21-27, Mandarnese dental status showed higherprevalence than Buginese, and for total tooth loss Buginese showed higher prevalencethan mandarnese. Total mean tooth loss between Mandarnese and Buginese not somuch different, which is 20.42 to 19.58. Generally no significant diet patterndifference found between Buginese and Mandarnese. Diet pattern consist of foodprocessed to meet elderly chewing capabilities. Analysis of relationship betweendental status and macro nutrient carbohydrate and protein intake showed significantrelation (p<0.05), as for lipid intake showed relation although not significant.Analysis of relationship between dental status and micro nutrient Vitamin D, E, and Cstatically showed no significant relation, Vitamin A showed no relation at all.

Abstract

Soursops (Annona muricata)are plants that have flower and sweet fruit. These plants have been used since long fortraditional medicine, especially the leaves, seeds, and fruits. This study aimed to determine the effect of concentrationof soursop leaf extract to the growth of Candida albicans on heat curing acrylic resin plate. The study begins with themanufacture of soursop leaf extract concentrations of 5%, 15%, 25%, 35%, and 45%, dilution of the extract, thepurification of C.albicans, growing C.albicans on saboraud dextrose agar medium, and minimum inhibitoryconcentration test. Data were analyzed by ANOVA followed by LSD test using SPSS 16.0. The results showed asignificant difference in the average number of C.albicans that grows between each concentration soursop leaf extract(α<0.05) and soursop leaf extract at a concentration of 45% is the most effective in inhibiting the growth of C.albicans.It was concluded that the higher the concentration of soursop leaf extract, the more effective in inhibiting the growth ofC.albicans.

Abstract

Supernumerary teeth is an abnormality in the form of increasing amount of teeth more than the normal amount, thatis more than twenty twenty in the decidui dentition or thirty two in the permanent dentition. The objective of thepresent study was to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of supernumerary teeth of 13-15 year old childrenin Makassar. This descriptive study involved 13-15 year old children who were present during the oral examinationin 14 junior high schools in Makassar. This cross-sectional study employed random sampling method. This studyfound 24 supernumerary teeth which yield a prevalence of 0.6%. The prevalence among male was higher thanamong female (M:F of 2.1:1). The greatest proportion of supernumerary teeth was found in the maxillary anteriorregion consisting of single supernumerary teeth (90.9%)and multiple supernumerary (9.1%). The prevalence ofcharacteristic sample based on their site of supernumerary teeth is mesiodens (58.3%) and lateral incisor (41.7%).Out of the 24 supernumerary teeth, 93.8% erupted and 4.2% partial erupted. The prevalence of characteristic samplebased on their morphology is conical (83.4%), tubercular (8.3%), and supplementale (8.3%). This study concludedthat the prevalence of supernumerary teeth for children of 13-15 years old in Makassar was found higher among male(ratio M:F of 2.1:1)and they are most frequently located in the maxilla. Most cases presented only single supernumeraryand in multiple cases the mesiodens region is predominant, with the conical shape is the commonest morphology.

Abstract

Grinding or clenching teeth during sleep or unconsciously called bruxism. Bruxism is a bad habit that is occured inalmost people, from children to adults. Bruxism closely related to changes in tooth morphology due to erosion of toothsurfaces, especially on the occlusal area. This study aimed to determine the morphological changes of permanent teethdue to bruxism. By using the method of observational analytic and cross-sectional design, the sample set in adults whoexperience bruxismas many as 69 samples; 23 samples do bruxismand 46 samples do not do bruxism. The results showedthat the morphological changes on occlusal and incisal surfaces of the teeth in 78.3% of samples undergo bruxism, andsamples do not undergo morphological changes as much as 21.7%. 6.5% of samples who did bruxism had dentalmorphology changes, and the prevalence is higher in men than women. With the chi-square test, it is known that thereis significant effect (p<0.05) of bruxism on morphological changes of permanent teeth. It was concluded that bruxismaffect the morphological changes of permanent teeth.

Abstract

Mastication has a long-term effect on the central nervous system and helps prevent degradation of brain function. Mastication is a complicated movement that results from a group of nerves in the brain stem and nerve tissue that involves several regions in the brain. Recent research suggests that there is a relationship between mastication, age, and decreased cognitive function in humans. Reduced masticatory activity, a risk factor for developing memory loss in humans, weakens spatial memory and causes neurons in the hippocampus to deteriorate morphologically and functionally. This often occurs in people with advanced age, where usually at an advanced age there will be changes in the oral cavity, such as tooth loss which can reduce the function of mastication in elderly people, causing them to experience decreased brain function. The purpose of this literary review is to evaluate the effect of mastication on alzheimer's.
