Abstract

This study has analyzed the multimodal construction of artificial intelligence (AI) features in Samsung Galaxy S24 AI Series advertising videos through a social semiotics approach to multimodal discourse analysis. The research focuses on how each AI feature in each segment of the video represents meaning through verbal and visual elements. Verbal elements have been analyzed for Halliday's ideational meaning which focuses on the main character's speech in the video. The visual elements have been analyzed based on Kress and van Leeuwen's visual grammar and how the two elements work together to form a meaning or narrative of advanced technology advertisements such as AI features. The analysis was conducted to explore the narrative and conceptual representations in the video. The results show that the Samsung brand from this video successfully integrates verbal and visual elements to create a narrative of efficiency and convenience, portraying AI technology as an intuitive tool to help users perform daily productivity. The findings contribute to the study of advertising strategies on technology, by highlighting how multimodal approaches influence consumers' perceptions of advanced technology, especially AI technology.

Abstract

This article aims at discussing the phonological variation of Surinamese Javanese in language contact with Dutch and Sranantongo. It has been conducted to scrutinize the specific differences regarding the phonology in Surinamese Javanese in comparison to its counterpart in Indonesia. The study involved the recordings of 16 native speakers of Surinamese Javanese and the recordings of 7 native speakers of Indonesian Javanese, all narrating a picture-story in Javanese Ngoko. The results disclose five phonological alternations: palatal plosive to voiceless and voiced alveolo-palatal affricates, vowel shift from central close-mid to front close, nasal-stop combinations, retroflex to non-retroflex plosive changes, and the change of alveolar nasal to velar nasal in suffixes. These suggest influences from Dutch and Sranan as well as independent developments in Surinamese Javanese. The general finding of the study is that language contact in the multilingual environment of Suriname significantly impacted the phonology of Surinamese Javanese, giving it a dynamic nature of language change under these circumstances.

Abstract

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic forced many universities to apply online learning. The purpose of this study was to break down the online learning process in the early pandemic as well as effective and optimal online learning. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected through observation, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. Interestingly, this study found online learning using the WhatsApp Group to be the most effective in the early COVID-19 pandemic. WhatsApp is easy, simple, and does not require a large data quota package. Through WhatsApp accounts, learning took place optimally because students and lecturers could communicate and share PowerPoint files, Microsoft Word files, JPGs, Voice Notes, Videos, and other learning resource links. The study recommends that other researchers uncover the solution to obstacles experienced by students in online learning and the development of other media to implement effective online lectures.

Abstract

The impact of globalization on higher education, understood as the increasing interconnectedness of academic systems, student mobility, and the circulation of knowledge across borders, has shaped students’ experiences of Studying Abroad (henceforth SA) and influenced their identity formation. This study explores the aspirations and challenges of the alumni of the student mobility program held by the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MORA) called MORA Overseas Student Mobility Awards (MOSMA), focusing on how they navigate identity in diverse cultural and linguistic settings throughout their SA journeys. Utilizing a narrative inquiry approach with a qualitative orientation, the research draws on Darvin and Norton’s model of language, identity, and investment. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with four Indonesian SA students from three Islamic universities in East Java, ensuring representation of diverse perspectives. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify their aspirations, struggles, and identity negotiations. Results indicate that SA supports the acquisition of cultural, social, and linguistic capital but requires negotiation of identities when facing insecurities related to language use and integration into foreign cultures. The interplay between language learning and identity formation is complex, often shaped by unequal power relations in these contexts. Upon return, the students also participated in additional identity negotiations as they reconciled the SA-transformed self with pre-SA roles, synthesizing global experiences not consistently valued in home settings.
