Abstract

Ulama plays various roles in the society, including as a social, economic, or cultural broker. However, when it comes to politics, ulama is sometimes only viewed as a magnet to attract electoral votes. This paper examined the representation of ulama in the media upon the nomination of KH. Ma’ruf Amin as Jokowi’s VP and aimed to shed a light on the extent such a representation could lead to the ulama’s image shift, by taking al-Mawardi’s concept of leadership into account. Considering the nature of the data, this study employed a descriptive-qualitative paradigm which attempts to produce descriptive information. The data; news texts were taken from four online media were collected through intensive reading and note-taking, while for social cognition purpose, the data were taken from student press activists and collected through a semi-structured interview. The results show that all the media under investigation employed a positive presentation upon KH. Ma’ruf Amin’s nomination by using various discursive strategies, such as presenting religious as well as political career background (authority), showing the burdens that imply a negative representation of others, and incorporating the numerical data to intensify the positive image being framed. Therefore, through those discursive vehicles, KH. Ma’ruf Amin’s image of leadership is solely projected in two qualities: religious authority and ability to manage public affairs.

Abstract

Environmental problems have become a severe issue in recent decades. The world has started to change due to human activities that affect the natural environment. Deforestation, industrialization, burning fuels, human overpopulation, and many more have triggered climate change. In her novel, Once There Were Wolves, Charlotte McConaghy vividly describes such a condition. This novel exposes how the Scottish Highlands begins to ruin because of the overabundant population of deer. They eat the plant shoots, and that makes the plants die. Moreover, this research intends to investigate human interferences in saving damaged nature as depicted in the novel. This study is a literary criticism since it aims to analyze the object used. Furthermore, the Ecocriticism approach was employed to analyze humans' efforts to help nature return to its natural state. The research method involves a deep reading and understanding of Charlotte McConaghy’s Once There Were Wolves, with a focus on the humans’ effort to rewild nature. The result reveals the portrayal of humans’ actions to help nature back into its natural state by releasing wolves as the apex predator, keeping the forest and vegetation, and finding places to grow trees. Doing those actions helps the Scottish Land back naturally. The deer population decreases and the land becomes a beautiful place to go.

Abstract

Love and belonging are universal and essential to human needs as they transcend cultural boundaries. This comparative study conducts an analysis of Xi Xi's A Woman Like Me, set in Hongkong, and Agus Noor's Kisah Cinta Perempuan Perias Mayat, set in Indonesia. Both short stories narrate the struggles of their protagonists with love, belonging, rejection, and social isolation. Therefore, this study aims to analyze how the social stigma associated with professional activities related to or leading to death stands in the protagonists' way in regard to satisfying their emotional needs, to establish how social rejection and isolation contribute to their self-concept development, and to show attempts they make to fulfill the need to be loved and to belong in spite of cultural barriers. This literary criticism applies Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and a qualitative comparative literature approach to illustrate the cross-cultural challenges in Hong Kong and Indonesia. The results indicate that while both protagonists strive for love and belonging, they are alienated by society due to their professions. Cultural aspects also revealed how Hong Kong and Indonesia's view of death shape their experiences of rejection. This study places emphasis on the intersection of character motivation in the pursuit of love and belonging, societal isolation and rejection caused by negative stigmatisation across cultures.
