Abstract

Carpe Diem derives from Latin which, in English, means seize the opportunity by enjoying the present time and trusting the least possible to the future. The future is formed through the present. Carpe Diem is the main theme in Andrew Marvell's To His Coy Mistress and is the object of this research. The poet's view of the transience of the world is clearly illustrated referring to the limitations of time and space for humans; Thus, every available moment must be utilized. This research is conducted using descriptive qualitative method related to social phenomena and based on the Carpe Diem terminology and supported by the concept of taking advantage of existing opportunities. These two concepts basically refer to a single notion which states that opportunities will not come repeatedly. The results show that there are two forms of Carpe Diem in this poem, namely in matters of love and sex and both are conveyed by the male lover to his lady by using the arguments that they are mortal and everything they have is limited. Relationships of love and sex must be carried out immediately because only then can they see, feel and enjoy the beauty of love and the pleasures of sex.

Abstract

Sosiolinguistik adalah salah satu ilmu cabang linguistik yang mengkaji hubungan antara bahasa dan masyarakat penuturnya. Aktifitas yang terjadi di kehidupan masyarakat pasti dihubungkan dengan bahasa dan pemakaian bahasanya. Keanekaragaman bahasa di masyarakat merupakan gejala bahasa yang sangat menarik untuk peneliti di bidang sosiolinguistik. Gejala sosial, globalisasi dan budaya sangat berpengaruh terhadap penggunaan bahasa, diantaranya adalah pergeseran, kepunahan dan pemertahanan bahasa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan pemertahanan bahasa Melayu dan faktor pendukung pemertahanan bahasa Melayu di Kelurahan Aur. Teori yang digunakan adalah teori sosiolinguistik tentang pemertahanan bahasa. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif dan data diperoleh dari informan melalui teknik wawancara. Hasil yang didapat dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan pemertahanan bahasa Melayu dan faktor pendukung pemertahanan bahasa Melayu di Kelurahan Aur.

Abstract

In everyday life, a system that regulates how humans should get along is needed. The system of rules in this association is mutual respect which is usually called courtesy. Manners are very necessary, especially in communication. Politeness in communication must be instilled and developed in each individual. However, nowadays politeness speech has seemed to fade, especially among students. So, it is hoped that through the "English Polite Utterances" training activity, students can actively participate in developing sentences or politeness speech with interlocutors in everyday life. So with that, students will be accustomed to communicating politely, especially in request sentences in English, so that students' politeness will increase. To achieve this goal, it is done through training and deepening practice. Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that politeness in communication must be instilled and developed in every student of SMA Nurul Hasanah Medan. The dialogue is composed of basic principles of politeness such as modals, please, the use of like and want and would.

Abstract

English is an international language that everyone must understand to be a part of today's globalized world. This Community Service aims to improve English language skills for early childhood at the Bumi Nusantara Orphanage in Medan. The stages in this activity are (1) providing English language material which is done by introducing objects that are seen daily in early childhood at the Bumi Nusantara Orphanage in Medan, (2) accompanying the provision of English vocabulary to improve the English language skills, (3) Evaluating activities through criticism and suggestions on the usefulness and sustainability of activities. The output of this community service is being able to pronounce and produce the right intonation of spoken English orally.

Abstract

An interrogative sentence is a sentence that asks something or someone that is used to get a response, answer, or information from someone or about something. This training is an activity that is intended to provide understanding and ability to young people at the Maimon Palace tourist attraction to form and use interrogative sentences used in English. One of the verbal communication skills is expected to be used in daily life by the participants of this training activity, so that the knowledge gained from this training can be applied directly in various environments. The method used in this training is the lecture and question and answer method. This is done to facilitate the delivery of material and also interact with participants. The expected target of this training is that participants understand interrogative sentences, verbal communication and how to form interrogative sentences which are used as a means of verbal communication in English.

Abstract

After the emergence of the Covid-19 outbreak, the education system began to look for an innovation for the process of teaching and learning activities. Many educational institutions use social media and e-learning-based learning media technology to support this learning.This study aims to determine the use of social media and learning media technology during pandemic covid-19which has spread throughout the world, especially Indonesia. The social media and learning media technologiesare Google Classroom, Zoom, Google Hangout Meet, YouTube and WhatsApp platforms. The research used a qualitative approach by collecting data with literature study then the results show that social media and learning media technology has many roles and benefits in the world of education, especially during distance learning in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. It can be concluded that thesocial media and learning media technology that is widely used by teachers and students are WhatsApp Group, Google Classroom, Google Hangout Meet, Zoom and YouTube.The use of appropriate social media and learning media can affect the learning outcomes of students, starting from the psychomotor, effective, and cognitive aspects.

Abstract

Dystopia paints a grim portrayal of the future, spotlighting threats to individual freedom, human rights, and core human values. Putu Wijaya's short story Protes employs the dystopian concept to provoke critical examination of society's trajectory and to caution against the potential adverse outcomes of unsustainable policies or behaviors. This study adopts a literary sociology approach, an interdisciplinary method blending sociological principles with literary analysis to unravel the social significance embedded within the text. Supported by pertinent concepts and theories, the research employs qualitative methods, generating descriptive data from the written words of the short story Protes, which serve as the primary data source. The researchers themselves serve as the research instruments. Data collection employs a tabulation system structured around discussion points pertaining to dystopian aspects. Analysis involves thorough reading and comprehension of the text, selection and categorization of relevant data, identification of key problem areas, description of observations based on the data, compilation of a research report, and ultimately, drawing conclusions. The findings reveal that Protes encompasses dystopian elements manifested in the forms of poverty, social conflict, and environmental degradation.

Abstract

English plays an important role in the tourism industry, especially in promoting overseas tours through tour guides. The communication that occurs between tour guides and tourists is related to the image of Indonesia by these tourists. By mastering foreign languages, as well as understanding the culture of various countries, it is expected to be able to provide the best service and be able to create a good impression or image which has the effect of increasing the Indonesian tourism industry. So in this study, functionalization of the use of English is needed so that the English language is easy to understand in order to the message conveyed by the speaker can be easily understood by the listener, especially for tour guides at Okdo Tour & Travel. The method used in this study is qualitative and data obtained through observation. Based on the research, it can be concluded that the tour guides lack of interest in honing English skills so that it affects the development of the potential that exists within the tour guides and it requires more professional English tutors so they can learn and use English in various activities.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research discusses the analysis of translation procedures in The Secret Life of Pets movie subtitle. This research aims to find out the types of translation procedures, to analyze how the translation procedures worked in the movie subtitle of The Secret Life of Pets movie, and to find out the dominant type of translation procedure in the movie subtitle. Qualitative research is applied in this research. The data of this research are words, phrases, and clauses that are taken from The Secret Life of Pets movie as the source of data. Vinay and Darbelnet (2000) theory is used in analyzing the types of translation procedures in this research. The results of this research are (1) there are 100 total data for the seven types of translation procedures by Vinay and Darbelnet, such as thirty for borrowing, twenty for calque, seventeen for literal translation, ten for transposition, ten for modulation, twelve for equivalence, and one for adaptation, (2) The dialogues are being translated to match the target audience's cultural and linguistic traditions while keeping It’s original meaning and tone, and (3) The dominant type of translation procedure that are found in the movie subtitle is borrowing Keywords: Translation, Translation Procedures, Movie, Subtitle
