Abstract

Despite the continued relevance of radio in Indonesia, existing studies tend to examine religious broadcasting, cultural preservation, or audience engagement separately, leaving limited understanding of how da‘wah and entertainment radio comparatively respond to audience needs for spiritual meaning and cultural identity. Addressing this gap, this study analyses and compares the roles of da‘wah-oriented and entertainment-oriented radio in conveying cultural and spiritual values in the Malay Riau context, focusing on Pekanbaru and Bangkinang. Grounded in Uses and Gratifications Theory, the study views audiences and broadcasters as active agents negotiating media use to fulfil spiritual, social, and cultural needs. Employing a qualitative phenomenological design, data were collected through interviews, participant observation, and documentation at four local radio stations, involving eight purposively selected informants, and analysed using NVivo 12. The findings show that da‘wah radio primarily fulfils cognitive and spiritual gratifications through Islamic programmes, while entertainment radio addresses social and affective gratifications by reinforcing Malay cultural identity. Both operate complementarily in sustaining spiritual awareness and cultural continuity.

Abstract

Religious moderation has emerged as a critical framework for sustaining social harmony within Indonesia's increasingly diverse urban communities. This study explores the lived experiences of multicultural Muslim communities in Pekanbaru, Riau, in practicing religious moderation and cultivating social tolerance. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, this research engaged 20 key informants selected through purposive sampling from a population of approximately 300 multicultural Muslim residents in Pekanbaru. Informants represented diverse social roles including religious leaders, community figures, Muslim youth, university students, educators, and general public members. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, and were analyzed using thematic analysis guided by the Miles and Huberman interactive model. Four major themes emerged from the analysis: (1) Islamic values as the foundation of social harmony, (2) lived experiences of religious moderation in multicultural settings, (3) practices of social tolerance and mutual respect, and (4) community resilience through collective moderation. Triangulation through source, method, and member checking confirmed the trustworthiness of findings. The study reveals that religious moderation in Pekanbaru is not merely a theological concept but a lived social practice rooted in Islamic teachings of brotherhood, compassion, and balanced conduct. These findings contribute to the theoretical understanding of how Islamic moderation operates at the grassroots level and offer practical implications for community development, Islamic education, and multicultural policy in Indonesian urban contexts.

Abstract

The move from higher education into the labour market is a demanding passage, and fresh graduates often enter it carrying considerable worry about what lies ahead. Guided by the family stress model, this study asked whether future anxiety differs by parental income, an indicator of family socioeconomic status, among fresh graduates in Pekanbaru, Indonesia, a city where open unemployment among university graduates remains a live concern. A causal-comparative design was used. Forty-five fresh graduates, defined as having completed their degree within the preceding two years and residing in Pekanbaru, were recruited through purposive sampling against fixed inclusion criteria. Future anxiety was measured with a 21-item instrument adapted from the Indonesian Future Anxiety Scale (Ruddin & Nuryanti, 2026), itself a cross-cultural adaptation of Zaleski’s (1996) Future Anxiety Scale, rated from 0 to 6 (Cronbach’s α = .902). Parental income was grouped into low, middle, and high categories and compared using one-way ANOVA with η² and ω² effect sizes, a confirmatory Kruskal Wallis test, and Spearman correlations; a sensitivity power analysis accompanied the comparison. Future anxiety did not differ significantly across income groups, F(2, 42) = 1.894, p = .163, η² = .083 (95% CI [.005, .380]), ω² = .038; Kruskal–Wallis H(2) = 1.981, p = .371. With 45 participants the achieved power was only .40, and detecting an effect of the observed size at .80 power would require roughly 110 participants. The absence of a significant difference should therefore be read as absence of evidence rather than evidence of absence. The study offers early local evidence on graduate well-being and argues for career counselling that is inclusive across income strata and informed by theory rather than by economic assumptions alone.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has increased online gaming among adolescents, with some experiencing addiction that affects psychological, social, and academic functioning. This phenomenon was identified among adolescents in the Mulya Tarai Gading Housing Complex, Kampar Regency. This study examined the effectiveness of the Ifdil Perceptual Light Technique (IPLT) as a visual-based intervention to reduce online gaming addiction. A quantitative pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was employed. From a population of 100 adolescents, six participants with moderate to high addiction levels were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a Likert-based online gaming addiction scale and analyzed through descriptive statistics, normality testing, paired-sample t-tests, and Cohen’s d effect size. Results showed a reduction in the mean addiction score from 42.33 to 26.33, with a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (p < 0.05). The findings indicate that IPLT is an effective and innovative intervention for reducing online gaming addiction and contributes to the development of adaptive visual-based counseling approaches in the digital era.
