Abstract

The research aims to describe Fitzgerald’s criticism presented through the novel, and to identify the capitalism concept portrayed in the novel. The research reveals the existence of the capitalism in the form of literary work. Method in the research is the qualitative descriptive method with the literary sociological approach. Data in the research are the characters and narrator’s expressions performed and uttered throughout the work. The expression are situated in several fragments in the work and they are analyzed continually. The research result indicates that capitalism is portrayed through the attitudes of the charachters in the novel. They represents the materialism and capitalism which has certainly created the gaps in the social life by indicating the different places of the West Egg and East Egg. The other gap is the different status that the characters belong to. The capitalism is repeatable in our current life because morally the community nowadays has also been corrupted as has been presented in newspapers everyday, as the examples murder, rape, divorce, and abuse. Moral decadence is the result of lack of spiritual values, the impact of money or materialism, lack of performing religious duties, and like violating the social rules.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PKM) ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam membaca dan meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata dasar bahasa Inggris siswa di MTs Opu Daeng Risaju Palopo. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut, PKM ini dilakukan melalui beberapa tahapan yaitu persiapan, pemberian pre-test, pelaksanaan kegiatan (Pemberian materi tentang manfaat membaca dan teknik membaca cepat, Membaca dan menceritaan hasil bacaan dan Pengajaran English basic vocabulary), evaluasi program (pemebrian angket, post-test dan wawancara) dan penyusunan laporan. Adapun luaran yang diarapkan dari kegiatan ini adalah meningkatnya motivasis siswa dalam membaca, meningkatnya kemampuan siswa dalam menceritakan ulang hasil bacaan , dan meningkatnya penguasaan kosa kata dasar siswa dalam bahasa Inggris (part of the body, direction dan daily verbs). Kegitan PKM ini berjalan dengan lancar serta mendapat respon yang sangat positif dari mitra. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari antusiasme siswa dalam mengikuti seluru rangkaian kegiatan PKM ini sampai selesai. Berdasarkan hasil dan pembahasan dapat diketahui bahwa pelaksanaan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dapat meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam membaca dan menceritakn hasil bacaan serta dapat meningkatkan kosakata dasar bahasa Inggris siswa di MTs Opu Daeng Risaju Palopo

Abstract

This study intends to convey the ability to interpret and speak especially early childhood in certain areas in Palopo using qualitative research. The instrument in this study was a standard Indonesian speaking test by interview directly. The results found were quite surprising because not all children were able to speak in a standard manner, some of them were influenced by local language even though the messages they conveyed were understood by the researcher well, but it was undeniable that some were also difficult to understand. This study also illustrates that the relationship between children's interpretation ability and speaking ability is related to one another, but in this case the researcher does not see one side only in the sense that it includes the strengths and weaknesses of each child.

Abstract

In conducting this research, the researcher used total sampling technique by applying it with mixed method. The findings of this research based on problem statement indicated: 1) Factors triggering the use of Code switching by English teachers are rethoric reason, differences of status and formalities; lack of vocabulary. And another factors gather from the condition of the classroom, such as the students’ ability are not same; Code switching emerges spontaneously; help the students to participate more. 2) The English teachers used Code switching in the classroom almost all of the phase of learning process from beginning until the end. 3) Frequency and percentage of using code switching in the classroom by each English teacher was different. The highest frequency by teacher 1 (Frequency 80 times and percentage 32%); then teacher 2 (Frequency 24 times and percentage 19%); and the lowest frequency done by teacher 3 (Frequency 21 times & percentage 18%).
