Abstract

AbstrakThis research analyzes the way the text of Abidah Khalieqy’s “Perempuan Berkalung Sorban” in expressing ideas of gender inequity. The ideas are examined by using three narrative elements taken from Seymour Chatman’s theory, namely: plot, characterization, and point of view. This research finds that this novel expresses the ideas very explicitly, even some of them in the form of propaganda. This novel shows very clearly the existence of gender inequity towards women.

Abstract

Kata-kata Kunci: pergumulan budaya, nilai-nilai budaya, bahan ajar, dialog antarbudaya

Abstract

This research aims to show how the issue of alienation is portrayed and classified in Donna Tartt’s novel The Secret History (1992). The issue of alienation in this research refers to the concept of alienation in literature that was established by Mary Horton, Nancy Gray Diaz, and Jennifer McClinton-Temple. In this research, the concept of alienation in the novel is analysed through the narrative aspects of focalization and space based on Mieke Bal’s theory of narratology. Through the narrative strategy in the novel, the main character—portrayed as the working class—who also serves as the focalizor as well as narrator is presented to express his sense of isolation and disconnection from his surroundings. This research concludes that due to his social class, the main character in the novel is presented to be alienated from his closer connections, his physical environment, and his epoch. Therefore, we argue that the portrayal of alienation in the novel represents a social class discrimination.

Abstract

Three fantasy books Shadow and Bone (2012), Six of Crows (2015), and Ninth House (2019)by Leigh Bardugo, feature three female characters in an ambiguous position by giving them conflicting characteristics. This study aims to show that these young adult novels present the female characters in an ambiguous position and how they have the characteristics of Women’s Writing. This study is done by analysing the female characters through the narrative of the story and through the characters themselves. The analysis found that the novel's narratives for the three female characters use contradictory actions by using the characteristics of witches and heroes thus making way for the ambiguous stance and by incorporating modern struggles that women go through showing the characteristics of Women’s Writing. It can be concluded that by using contradictory actions through the characteristics of witches and heroes in the three female characters, an ambiguous position could be portrayed and how through them, the characteristics of Women’s Writing can be seen.
