Abstract

This study aims to describe the process of developing test-based learning media on the topic of Essen und Trinken (Food and Drink) using the Easy Test Maker application, and to measure the outcomes of this development in A1-level German language learning. This research and development (R&D) study employed the Richey and Klein model, consisting of three stages: planning, production, and evaluation. The subjects were eleventh-grade students at MAN 2 Model Medan. The data source consisted of vocabulary and sentence-structure material on the topic of Essen und Trinken, adapted from the textbook Netzwerk neu A1: Deutsch als Fremdsprache. Data were collected through classroom observation, interviews with German teachers, pre-tests and post-tests, and expert validation of the material. The findings show that the development of Easy Test Maker-based media was successfully carried out through the three stages. In the evaluation stage, students' learning outcomes improved from the pre-test to the post-test on both multiple-choice and essay items. Qualitatively, students showed increased motivation, confidence, and engagement after using the media. It can be concluded that test-based learning media developed with Easy Test Maker is effective as an interactive evaluation alternative in German language learning, particularly on the topic of Essen und Trinken.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop Leseübungen materials and text comprehension strategies based on student feedback for B1-level German language learning in the German Language Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Medan. The study was motivated by the low student pass rate in the Lesen module, which was caused by limited vocabulary mastery, difficulties in understanding sentence structures, ineffective reading strategies, and low comprehension of textual contexts. The research employed the Design-Based Research method using Reeves’ model, which consists of four stages: collaboration with practitioners, identification of solutions, evaluation, and revision. Based on the results of the analysis, Leseübungen materials grounded in Student-Centered Learning (SCL) were developed by integrating collaborative strategies. The developed materials were validated by three experts and achieved an average Aiken’s V score of 0.93, categorized as highly valid. The implementation phase involved 20 students from the B1 Vorbereitung class. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ Lesen abilities. The mean pre-test score increased from 46.25 to 63.90 in the post-test, with the paired sample t-test showing t = 9.44 and a significance value of p < 0.05. The findings indicate that the development of Leseübungen materials based on student feedback was effective in improving B1-level German text comprehension skills. The development of learning materials tailored to students’ needs, combined with collaborative strategies and the integration of learning technologies, contributed to improved global and detailed text comprehension and supported the enhancement of German language learning quality in higher education.

To examine the influence of slang on language literacy decline among Indonesian youth and its implications for formal language skills, social identity, and intergenerational relations. Method. A mixed-method study was conducted in Jakarta, Surabaya, and Medan, employing in-depth interviews, surveys, and social media content analysis. Data were collected from 150 respondents to assess slang usage patterns and their impact on formal language capabilities. Results. The study revealed that 80% of frequent slang users struggled with formal language in academic settings, while 65% reported diminished essay-writing abilities. Additionally, 70% identified slang as integral to their social identity, though 60% experienced communication difficulties with older generations. Social media platforms significantly influenced slang adoption, with 90% of respondents regularly using slang on Instagram and TikTok. Conclusion. The findings demonstrate a significant correlation between frequent slang usage and declining formal language literacy among Indonesian youth. This trend affects academic performance and intergenerational communication, highlighting the need for balanced language education strategies that preserve formal literacy while acknowledging youth linguistic identity.
