Abstract

The research purpose is to investigate and explore a solution of non-directed of mathematics problems presented visually or algebraic, and to embed the empirical verification thinking. The problems are from Researcher Repertoire, test item of Teacher Profession Education of National Indonesia, and Flanders Mathematics Olympiad. We analyze the students’ empirical verification thinking of their solutions, i.e. the trend of the thinking, model of representation, and completeness of the logical steps. The results are: the pattern of thinking tends to linear model or of meta-pattern, the description tends to be non-linear or varies of the solution, and the logical steps tend to be a non-recognizable form of thinking. Our recommendations are that the more visual representations need multiple representations, the algebraic thinking needs more the visual illustrations, and the visual images needed in solving mathematics problems.

Abstract

This research is the development of a mathematical learning model based on conceptual understanding. The main research problem: How to develop students' current understanding which tends to turn from factual and procedural knowledge to conceptual knowledge? The purpose of the research is to build and develop the emergence of students' conceptual knowledge, as well as to identify and analyze the lecturer's conceptual knowledge. Data were collected through direct observation in the classroom while learning was taking place in the Mathematics Education Study Program. Observations in three different classes, namely Algebra Class, Calculus Class, and Geometry Class. The display and class discussion were recorded by the researcher, especially on some of the problems that arose. Then the researcher developed a discussion through conceptual questions, which aimed to build conceptual knowledge and simultaneously develop prior knowledge from educators and students. The data recording mechanism is from the classroom so that in the first stage, researchers get a class model in learning or teaching mathematics. From the initial model, the researcher and the class developed conceptual thinking of the problem or problem solving as a form of testing the validity of the model. Testing is carried out primarily to avoid factual and procedural knowledge. The results of this study are the identification of mathematical knowledge in learning and can be known how to work and the way the class thinks as a whole. Overall, an analysis of the concept-based learning model is generated.

Abstract

This research was conducted because in schools there are still teachers who have not fully created test instruments independently, such as the provision of descriptive questions still sourced from books, and the provision of test instruments that are given cannot measure students' interpretation abilities. This study aims to develop a test instrument to measure interpretation abilities in solving proportion problems in class VIII students of SMPN 3 SATAP Balai, the development in this study refers to the R & D research method of the ADDIE model, which has five main stages, namely Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The stratified sampling method divides into high, medium and low achievement groups based on the Final Semester Assessment (PAS) score. The results of this development are in the form of 1) A test instrument package in the form of interpretation test question grids, interpretation test questions, scoring guidelines, alternative answers and 2) Student test results, it was obtained that student interpretation with an average interpretation score of 67.67 was in the medium interpretation, while for high interpretation with a score of 91.67 and for interpretation with the lowest score of 55.00. The average achievement of the indicator obtained that the test results show that the average percentage of achievement of the interpretation indicator in solving the highest proportion problem is 85.19% for the indicator of writing down what is known, and the lowest is 7.41% for the indicator of checking the solution again carefully without making mistakes. The conclusion shows that the development of a valid and practical test instrument to measure interpretation skills in solving proportion problems and can be used in schools.
