Abstract

Movie is the most popular entertainment medium, which is liked and enjoyed by the majority of people around the world. Since a lot of movies are produced in one language but watched by people who speak in different languages, subtitle becomes the important way of conveying the utterances in the movie. However, literal translation is not possible in subtitling because of the differences in the sociocultural aspects and language structure. Therefore, the oblique translation technique is often used in the subtitling, consisting of transposition, modulation, equivalence, and adaptation. This study aims to examine adaptation modes applied in Indonesian subtitle of Enola Holmes (2020) movie using the qualitative descriptive comparative method. Data collection was performed by collecting data from the movie broadcasted by Netflix. Data analysis is carried out by comparing the Indonesian subtitle with the utterance using the data analysis technique by Krippendorff and Nazir. As the result, seven adaptation modes by Baker and Saldahan were applied in the translated subtitle. The frequency of applied adaptation mode consists of 14 times of Transcription of Original, 4 times of Omission, 2 times of Expansion, 14 times of Exoticism, 5 times of Updating, 11 times of Situational or Cultural Adequacy, and 1 time of Creation. The finding of the study indicates that adaptation modes can be applied when translating utterance to text.

Abstract

Advertising is one of the most influential media for selling a product, especially in this digital era. Advertising has a huge impact on a company or individual to market their products. When opening social media, there are so many ads that appear, and it is the quirky ads that can attract the attention of people who see it. One of the interesting advertisements is that there is a slogan that makes readers curious about the product. The most of the sentences in the slogan are difficult for readers to understand which makes readers curious and want to find out more about the product. This study used a qualitative method where the process and meaning are more highlighted in this study. The theoretical basis is used as a guide so that the research focus is in accordance with the facts. The main theory used in this paper is the Seven Types of Meaning by Leech (1981). The result of this study finds that five data in this paper, all of them contain associative meanings, three of them are affective meanings and two of them are connotative meanings.

Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate the violations of maxims cooperative principle uttered in conversations of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness movie and its intended meaning. This study is designed into a descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study consists of twenty conversations reflecting violation of uttered maxims cooperative principle found in the movie. The data collection is done by observation in several steps such as identifying and marking maxim violation in conversation, classifying each data with Grice’s maxim cooperative principle theory, and giving code on data. Data analysis is done by describing the context of each conversation, then analyzing data by Grice’s maxim cooperative principle. The result shows that 9 data or 45% is categorized into violation of quantity maxim, 6 data or 30% is categorized into violation of quality maxim, 3 data or 15% is categorized into violation of relation maxim, and 2 data or 10% is categorized into violation of manner maxim. From the result, it can be seen that quantity maxim is most often violated in the conversation at whole. Then, the intended meaning of maxim violation is to ignore the conflict, deny the opinion, pressure someone, entertain someone, and change a topic of conversation.

Abstract

Clean water is a basic requirement of the Hydraulics Laboratory for experimental/practical applications. Sometimes the water used has decreased in quality because it is often used repeatedly, making the water smelly and cloudy. Therefore it needs to be discarded or replaced. So that the use of clean water is not wasteful, a printed water filter is designed for the purpose of purifying and saving water use. The initial stage is to design, then make a printed water filter model without using water filter materials in general. The next stage is the function test, whether it is successful or not, able or not to purify the water. The test results are then re-evaluated until the highest percentage of functional success is obtained. The final stage of the research is to test the functionality and test samples. Testing of water quality samples that pass through the printed water filter is compared with raw well water samples. The results of laboratory tests of water quality are then analyzed and a conclusion is drawn, how much is the percentage of clarity, the higher the percentage, the higher the water quality. The research target is a printed water filter model that can be applied especially to the Hydraulics Laboratory and a wider target that can be applied by all levels of society, and the clean water supply industry. The advantages of this filter are that it is easy to make by all walks of life, the design is simple and the materials are also easily available wherever we are, whether in the city or in the village.
