Abstract

Abstract. Referring to the result of Indonesia National Assessment Programme in 2017, the literacy (reading and writing skills) of elementary school students were still low, that is, only 46.83%. This condition needs to be improved, and one of the ways to enhance it is by implementing Gerakan Literasi Sekolah (GLS)/School Literacy Movement. This community service aims to improve the students’ writing skill as en effort to implement the GLS. This community service was conducted in the form of training of story writing. The training was implemented at one of the Islamic Elementary School in Blitar, East Java. The participants of the training included the students of grade 4, 5, and 6, totalling 52 students. The training was conducted by applying flipped classroom. The material is given to the students in the form of video that they should learn online, and subsequently they were given face-to-face writing guidance in the classroom. The results showed that the students were able to create a story about their experiences during the pandemic. The analysis of students’ writing revealed that the students’ abilities in composing a text was good. These abilities include developing ideas and using proper words and sentence structure. However, most of the students still encountered difficulties in using mechanics of writing, such as capitalization and punctuation. This needs to be followed up by intensifying writing activity at school, and generating other trainings to enhance the students’ writing skill.

Abstract

Referring to the Instruction of the Minister of Home Affairs Number 38 of 2021 which explains, for regions that have entered levels 1 to 3 in the Covid-19 distribution map, they can open limited face-to-face learning. In response to this, many schools in Blitar Regency have implemented limited face-to-face learning, one of which is MI Darul Ulum Genengan. Besides, one of the problems that will likely occur when face-to-face learning is carried out is the lack of interest in learning when the lesson takes place. This is because students have been doing online learning at home for a long time, and when they have to return to school, there will certainly be many differences, such as the way the material is delivered and the material obtained. Therefore, the activities we carry out are aimed at helping students increase their interest in learning in class, by using the Group Discussion method. The results of this activity indicate that students are more motivated by conducting group discussions, they are more enthusiastic when studying or working with their friends, and students become more creative. It is hoped that later this activity can be followed up by teachers at MI Darul Ulum to increase interest in learning and can provide motivation during class learning.

Abstract

This community service aims to develop students' writing literacy in the form of training. The main focus of this community service is to train students to write effective sentences and apply punctuations. This training involved 15 grade VI students of MIS Darul Ulum Genengan who had taken the Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM). They were selected as training participants to follow up on the results of the AKM. The training was held for 6 meetings in the period from August 1–31, 2022. The training activities include: pretest (writing text); vocabulary identification; sentence analysis; punctuation analysis; vocabulary, sentence, and punctuation exercises; and posttest (writing text). These activities were carried out in groups and individually by applying attractive learning strategies and media. After participating in the training, 80% of students were able to reach a proficient level in writing. This result far exceeds the pre-training achievement; that is, 73% of students were only able to reach the basic level. With these results, it is highly recommended for the school to intensify literacy activities, especially writing. Those who are talented can continue to hone their skills, and those who still need special intervention can continue to develop their abilities.
