Abstract

Abstract — Japanese traditional housing, in its approach to harmony with natural surroundings and environment has formed as unique shape and philosophy which become Japan National property. In the other hand Japan traditional house recently becomes not popular in Japan while Japanese contemporary house has technology method for controlling its environment. However high technology needs more energy to consume and this causes the other problem of environment. This study of traditional houses, located in Kitakyushu City, aims to investigate the architectural characteristic of Japanese traditional house such as structure, plan, material, and natural environment control system. In the beginning, two traditional houses have been selected as target of study; those are Takasaki Old Residence and Shimizu Old Residence in Yahata Nishi Ward. The first section is devoted to the analysis of basic form and structure in three traditional houses. In the following section, the study examines methods used to control the architectural environment in Japanese traditional house which we can call natural environment control system. In conclusion, a preliminary outline of the architectural characteristic and natural environment control system analysis are given. Moreover, the result of this study can be expected become inspiration for recent house construction.

Abstract

Despite strong policy support, vertical housing in Bandung struggles to gain public acceptance. This reveals a significant gap between policy goals and residents’ experiences, which shape their long-term housing preferences. Aims: The study identifies the key economic, socio-spatial, and institutional factors that predict resident satisfaction and influence the decision to leave vertical housing. Methodology and results: Using a mixed-methods comparative design was used, including a survey of 75 residents. The results show that institutional factors, such as low management satisfaction (mean < 3.1/5) and infrastructure issues, are the primary drivers of dissatisfaction. Commercial residents prioritize transactional attributes, such as location and aesthetics, while rental flat residents apply a communal logic, linking satisfaction to their entire living environment. Conclusion, significance, and impact of the study: The study reveals a striking convergence: the majority of residents in both commercial (72%) and public rental flats (62%) desire to move to landed housing. This indicates a policy Implementation dilemma, where failures in management and maintenance push residents to desire moving back to landed houses, which in turn undermines the policy's goal of curbing urban sprawl.

Abstract

Traditional Japanese houses, or Minka, represent a culturally rich and climate-responsive architectural form that has long demonstrated effective passive cooling strategies. Among their many features, the Doma, a ground-level, unboarded floor area typically located near the entrance—serves as a thermal buffer that can significantly influence indoor temperature dynamics. This study explores the passive cooling potential of the Doma through a combined approach of field measurement and simulation, using the U House in Koyanose, Kitakyushu, as a case study. Temperature and humidity data were collected over a one-week period during the summer season, focusing on the spatial relationship between the doma and adjacent tatami rooms. The results revealed that the Doma consistently maintained lower air temperatures than the surrounding living spaces and contributed to a reduction in temperatures in nearby rooms. To identify the optimal spatial configuration for cooling, simulations were conducted using DesignBuilder software to evaluate three different Doma placements: north (existing), east, and south. Among these, the southern Doma placement yielded the lowest average indoor temperatures across all tested rooms, achieving reductions of up to 1.3°C during the daytime compared to the original layout. These findings underscore the Doma’s potential as a cost-effective and culturally embedded passive cooling strategy. The study contributes to sustainable architectural practices by illustrating how vernacular design elements can be adapted and optimized using modern simulation tools. As global temperatures continue to rise, integrating such passive design principles into both traditional and contemporary buildings offers a promising pathway for enhancing thermal comfort and reducing energy consumption.

Abstract

The slum relocation program is a government strategy to provide decent, safe, and affordable housing for low-income communities. The Rumah Deret Tamansari (RDTS) in Bandung City is a relocation project for residents of the Tamansari slum area that aims to improve the quality of housing and the urban environment. This study aims to evaluate the level of satisfaction of residents with the quality of housing and the environment of RDTS. The research method uses a mixed approach through the distribution of questionnaires to 24 residents, semi-structured interviews, and field surveys to assess the physical condition of the building and environmental facilities. Aspects evaluated include room size, thermal comfort, lighting, cleanliness, security, accessibility, public facilities, and social adaptation of residents. The results indicate that 63% of respondents expressed overall satisfaction with the housing and environmental quality of RDTS. Satisfaction levels were highest for location and accessibility (over 80% agreement), cleanliness (71%), and security (75%). In contrast, dissatisfaction was most evident in domestic space size (42% dissatisfied) and shared facilities management, particularly elevator functionality (55% dissatisfied). The field survey revealed that the building quality is relatively good with the implementation of passive designs such as inner courts and cross-ventilation. This study emphasizes the importance of continuous evaluation and participatory management to realize sustainable vertical housing that is oriented towards the housing quality of residents’ life.
