Abstract

The interpretation of the Song of Songs has a long history. The traditional Jewish and early Christian interpreters apply the allegory method to find a “spiritual” meaning. For example, they try to understand the Groom as the Lord and the Bride as Israel. Furthermore, early Christian tradition interprets the Groom as Jesus and the Bride as the Church. Nevertheless, in this article, we try to read the Song of Songs in other perspective by understanding it in the light of Ancient Near East (ANE)’s background. We will focus on the exegesisand general analysis on Song 7:7-10a. This passage is a part of a big section of Song 6:4-7:11 (“New Songs of the Beloved Man”). Song 7:7-10a is an admiration-movement. We try to propose a new general structure of Song 7:7-10a and its meaning in the light of ANE’s background on royal ideology, temple, wisdom, promised land and love traditions.

Abstract

The important question in this article is “How important is the construction of the tabernacle, on the sanctuary texts, especially in Exod 39:32-43 (in the larger context of Exod 25-31.35-40), for our church today, especially in Asia – in the midst of Covid-19 pandemic?”  Therefore, this article tries (1) to develop some theological thoughts of the Construction of Tabernacle in Exod 39:32-43 for Our Church Today; (2) to explore their theological implications for our situation today – in the midst of Covid-19 pandemic; and (3) to improve some theological thoughts on “Tabernacle” in the Catholic Church, especially regarding Sacramentum Caritatis 69 which describes the location of the tabernacle in the church by using the strong words, “The correct positioning of the tabernacle”. We try to go deeper on it by examining the richness of theological thoughts behind “the tabernacle” – not just focus on “the location” but try to go beyond.

Abstract

Abstract. Patriarchal domination often causes gender bias. In this case, woman is considered to be in a subordinate position to man. This impression can also be seen in Javanese culture, in which woman are often seen as “konco wingking.” Therefore, this paper intends to examine the portrait of woman (wife) in Javanese culture by comparing them with the description of woman in Proverbs 31:10-31. This study is conducted by Martha Nussbaum's feminist interpretation. Through this study, an understanding was obtained that as described by woman in Proverbs 31:10-31, woman's position in Javanese culture does not always have to be interpreted as a limitation, but instead becomes a means of woman’s developing and controlling over her environment as the key to achieving happiness.Abstrak. Dominasi patriarki seringkali menyebabkan adanya bias gender. Dalam hal ini perempuan dianggap dalam posisi subordinat dari laki-laki. Kesan tersebut juga terlihat dalam budaya Jawa, di mana perempuan tidak jarang dianggap sebagai “konco wingking.” Oleh karena itu, tulisan ini bermaksud untuk mengkaji potret perempuan (istri) dalam budaya Jawa dengan mengkomparasikan dengan gambaran perempuan dalam Amsal 31:10-31. Studi ini memanfaatkan interpretasi feminis Martha Nussbaum. Melalui kajian ini diperoleh pemahaman bahwa sebagaimana gambaran perempuan dalam Amsal 31:10-31, posisi perempuan dalam budaya Jawa tidak selalu harus dimaknai sebagai pembatasan, namun justru menjadi sarana pengembangan dan kontrol perempuan terhadap lingkungannya sebagai kunci mencapai kebahagiaan.

Abstract

AbstractThis article is a theological interpretation of Jeremiah’s dispute and God’s answer in Jeremiah 12:1-13. In the midst of his frustration over Anatot’s assassination threat, Jeremiah questions the God’s wisdom. This is a fundamental question about what humans wish for and what they get. However, God’s answer is something unpredictable. In His wisdom, God gives a warning about what will happen in the future that will be even tougher. This Jeremiah’s passage will be read using the rhetorical criticism metho, that will stress the intention of the writer in using such a term or metaphor to deliver his theological message. Finally, it will be found that God’s wisdom is an effort to train Jeremiah and his reader to hold on and look for God in the time of suffering.   Abstrak Artikel ini merupakan suatu tafsiran teologis yang mengaitkan antara perbantahan Yeremia dan jawaban Allah (Yer 12:1-13). Dalam keadaan frustrasi berhadapan dengan ancaman pembunuhan dari Anatot, Yeremia mempertanyakan kebijaksanaan Allah. Pertanyaan yang diungkapkan oleh Yeremia ini adalah suatu pertanyaan fundamental mengenai apa yang diharapkan manusia dan yang didapatnya. Namun demikian jawaban yang diberikan Allah merupakan suatu yang di luar harapan. Dalam kebijaksanaan-Nya, Allah memberikan suatu peringatan mengenai apa yang akan terjadi di masa depan yang bahkan akan lebih berat lagi. Teks Yeremia ini akan dibaca dari sudut pandang pendekatan retoris yang menitikberatkan pada faktor kesengajaan si penulis teks tersebut dalam menggunakan metafora binatang buas dalam menyampaikan pesan teologisnya. Melalui pendekatan tersebut, pada akhirnya akan dijumpai pula bahwa kebijaksanaan Allah ini dapat dimengerti sebagai pilihan strategis Allah dalam mendidik Yeremia dan para pembacanya untuk berpegang dan mencari-Nya pada masa-masa sulit tersebut.
