Abstract

This study is intended to develop listening materials. The research problem was “What is the appropriate listening material for the tenth graders of Islamic Senior High School of MA Ma’arif 7 Banjarwati. The study was designed in the form of Research and Development (R & D). The steps were need analysis, developing listening materials, expert and teachers’ validation, revision, try out, and final product. In collecting the data, several instruments were used. They are try-out, questionnaire, observation, and field notes. After the materials have been developed and validated by the expert and teacher, then it is tried out. Ten students were involved the try out. After the try out, the students stated their opinion. For the attractiveness, clarity of the recording, speed of delivery, vocabulary usage, and difficulty. Most the students stated that the materials were very good. For the result of the try out, the students made the most mistakes on ticking true or false activities. The steps of the research are need analysis, developing materials, expert and teachers’ validation, revision, try out and the final product. The product of this study is teacher’s book, student’s worksheet, and the listening materials. The materials are compiled in the form of CD. They are the language, length, content, style, and speed of delivery, the style of delivery and the quality of the recording. The materials are suitable with the students’ need, interest, and level of students’ ability in English. Listening activities can motivate students’ interest in learning English. Listening materials can give teachers a lot of input to be better in preparing listening activities

Abstract

Pronunciation is the production of speech sounds for communication. Many Indonesian students found difficulties in pronouncing English words correctly. This study aims at investigating the students’ pronunciation of English diphthong of the fourth semester students of English Language Education Program at Qomaruddin University. A descriptive qualitative design is applied in this study. 31 respondents are the main source in collecting the data. To collect the data, two instruments used. They are test and interview. The respondents are asked to read a certain text and read some vocabulary while the writer is examining them once. As the result, the writer found 512 errors in reading text. The most source of errors was in pronouncing English diphthong /əʊ/ 207 errors or 40,43%. There were 221 errors in reading vocabularies. The most source of errors was in pronouncing English diphthong /eɪ/90 errors or 40,72%. This study also found the substitution, insertion and omission as the error types of pronunciation. In reading text was found 329 errors or 64,76% of substitution, and 160 errors or 31.50% of omission. Meanwhile, in reading vocabularies there were 111 errors or 51,39%  of substitution and 104 errors or 48,15% of omission. However, the result of the interview had found difficulties in pronouncing English diphthong such as difficulties to memorize diphthong sounds and influenced of their mother tongue. Meanwhile, as the students, the most important thing is to know about knowledge and practice. It means that they have to know the phonetic transcription and practice more and more to have good pronunciation.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the interest of EFL students in academic reading and the factors influencing their interest. The design employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were obtained from twenty-four students in the third semester of the English Education study program at Qomaruddin University. The data for this study were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire aimed to determine the students' interest in reading, while the interview aimed to gather data on the factors influencing students' interest. The results of the study were presented using descriptive qualitative analysis. The results of this study showed that 68% of students responded that they rarely read, and 75% of students prefer watching TV to academic reading. Several factors influenced students' interest in reading including awareness, motivation, and environment.
