Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is intended to find out the needs of Jim’s character which was portrayed in Passengers (2016) film. It was also to identify the fulfilment of his needs based on five stages of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. The theory that is used to analyze the main character in this film was the hierarchy of needs theory. It was Abraham Maslow’s theory which consists of five stages of human needs. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method by Elo and Kyngas. The result of this research shows Jim fulfilled five of his needs, which are physiological needs, safety needs, belongingness and love needs, self-esteem, and self-actualization. There were moments where he has fulfilled higher stage of needs, but another needs from the lower stage appear. For example, at some scenes he fulfilled his love and belongingness needs by waking Aurora up and some sparks of love appear between them. When Arthur the bartender robot told Aurora the truth that Jim was the one who took her life from her, Jim back to the stage where he has love and belongingness needs. Jim also actualized himself as a mechanic, a rate two mechanic, which he thought was useful on the starship. Even though he has reached the highest stage of hierarchy of needs, another needs from lower stage appeared. Safety needs appeared when the starship got hit by a huge meteor and damages multiple parts of the starship at once.  ABSTRAK Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kebutuhan dari karakter Jim yang di gambarkan dalam film Passengers (2016). Selain itu juga untuk mengidentifikasi pemenuhan dari kebutuhannya berdasarkan lima tingkatan Hierarchy of Needs dari Maslow. Teori yang digunakan untuk menganalisa karakter utama dalam film ini adalah teori Hierarchy of Needs yang terdiri dari lima tingkatan kebutuhan manusia. Peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif oleh Elo dan Kyngas. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan Jim memenuhi lima kebutuhannya, yaitu kebutuhan fisiologi, kebutuhan keamanan, kebutuhan akan rasa memiliki dan cinta, harga diri, dan aktualisasi diri. Ada saat-saat dimana ia telah memenuhi kebutuhan di tingkat yang lebih tinggi, namun kebutuhan dari tingkat lebih rendah muncul. Misalnya, pada beberapa adegan ia telah memenuhi kebutuhan akan cinta dan rasa memiliki dengan membangunkan Aurora dan cinta muncul diantara mereka. Saat Arthur sang bartender memberitahu Aurora bahwa Jim adalah orang yang merenggut hidupnya darinya, Jim kembali ke tahap dimana ia memliki kebutuhan akan cinta dan rasa memiliki. Jim juga mengaktualisasikan dirinya sebagai mekanik, mekanik tingkat dua, yang menurutnya akan berguna di pesawat luar angkasa. Meskipun ia telah mencapai tingkat tertinggi dari Hierarchy of Needs, kebutuhan lain dari tingkatan lebih rendah muncul. Kebutuhan akan keamanan muncul ketika kapal luar angkasa tekena meteor besar dan merusak beberapa bagian kapal luar angkasa. Kata kunci: Hierarchy of Needs, Karakter, Karakterisasi, Passengers

Abstract

ABSTRACT The study aims to discover the types of racial discrimination portrayed in Kit De Waal’s My Name is Leon novel as well as to identify the discrimination seen through the colored characters in the novel. The researcher uses the qualitative research with a mimetic approach to conduct the research. The data source of the study is Kit De Waal’s My Name is Leon novel. The data are collected from the narration and dialogues related to the racial discrimination toward the characters through the characterization depicted by the characters. The theories that are used in this study are Blank’s theory of Measuring Racial Discrimination and Kenan’s theory of narration. The results of this study show that explicit and intentional discrimination (verbal antagonism, avoidance, segregation, and physical attack), subtle prejudice, and organizational process are portrayed in this novel seen through the characters’ direct and indirect presentation which involve their characterization such as their speeches, actions, external appearances, and the environments related to the racial discrimination issue depicted in the story.Keywords: My Name is Leon, Discrimination, Racism, Indirect Presentation ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan jenis-jenis diskriminasi rasial yang digambarkan dalam novel Kit De Waal berjudul My Name is Leon serta untuk mengidentifikasi diskriminasi yang dilihat melalui tokoh-tokoh di dalam novel. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif yang menggunakan pendekatan mimesis. Sumber data dari penelitian ini adalah novel karya Kit De Waal berjudul My Name is Leon. Data tersebut dikumpulkan dari narasi dan dialog yang terkait dengan diskriminasi rasial terhadap tokoh-tokoh melalui karakterisasi yang digambarkan oleh para tokoh. Teori-teori yang digunakan untuk penelitian ini adalah Teori Pengukuran Diskriminasi Rasial dari Blank dan teori Kenan mengenai teori narasi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa diskriminasi eksplisit dan disengaja (antagonisme verbal, penghindaran, segregasi, dan serangan fisik), prasangka licik dan proses organisasi digambarkan dalam novel ini dilihat melalui presentasi tidak langsung dari karakter berkulit hitam yang melibatkan karakterisasi mereka seperti wicara, tingkah laku, penampilan luar, dan lingkungan yang terkait dengan isu diskriminasi rasial yang tergambarkan dalam cerita tersebut.Kata Kunci: My Name is Leon, Diskriminasi, Rasisme, Presentasi Tidak Langsung

Abstract

This research is focused on the main character Elizabeth Bennet in the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen with the study psychology of literature. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive method to describe the structure of Elizabeth Bennet's personality in the novel Pride and Prejudice and the type of Elizabeth Bennet's personality in the novel Pride and Prejudice. This study used the theory psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud and the personality types by Florence Littauer as a supporting theory in solving the problems. The data in this research were words, phrases, sentences obtained from the novel Pride and Prejudice. Data collection techniques used the technique of reading and take notes. The data analysis technique used qualitative analysis which consists of three activities, such as data reduction, data displayed and drawing a conclusion. The results of this study indicate that, there is the impetus of id, ego and superego in Elizabeth Bennet. The impetus of the id in Elizabeth was able to be fulfilled by the responses of the ego and the basis of considerations' superego. In addition, Elizabeth Bennet’s personality categorized into the choleric personality type because it is known that the characteristic of personality from Elizabeth Bennet is included in the characteristics of the choleric personality type.

Abstract

The research discusses the main character’s needs in a movie titled The Danish Girl. The Danish Girl tells the story of Einar Wegener, a painter who decided to be transgender after he became a woman model for the painting of his wife, Gerda. He became two different people incorporated in a body. First, he was a talented painter and a great husband. Second, he was Lili Elbe, an elegant woman who was the model of Gerda’s painting. The research aims to find out how Einar met his needs in life using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory. The research applies a qualitative research method and the findings are presented in descriptively. The research finds that Einer Wegener managed to meet his needs for physiological needs, security, love and belonging, and esteem. The findings reveal that Einar Wegener failed to meet the self-actualization need. The researcher finds that Einar Wegener wanted to complete his transformation to be a woman to secure a happier and more comfortable life. When Einar transformed into Lili following, Einar no longer painted and buried Einar’s biggest talent as a painter. He merely focused to make a total transformation to be Lili following his decision for surgery. At last, he passed away before fulfilling his need to be a real woman. Therefore, it can be concluded Einer failed to meet his self-actualization need.
