Abstract

AbstractIllocutionary act is performing an act by saying something. There were five types of illocutionary act, namely: assertives, directives, commissives, expressives and declaratives. The Croods movie is a story about the journey of a family who wants to find a safer place for them to life. The aims of this research were to find out the types and to know the context of illocutionary act of Grug’s utterances in The Croods movie. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method, because the data of this research were from the utterances containing the types and the context of illocutionary act of Grug’s utterances. The data of this research were taken from 38 sample utterances of Grug’s conversation. From the analysis can be concluded that they were 13 utterances in the form of assertive which can be categorized into stating, concluding and asserting. Thirteen directive utterances in the form of commanding, requesting, ordering, questioning and forbidding. Commissive appeared in six utterances in the form of promising and refusing. The last types of illocutionary act was expressive which appeared in six utterances in the form of thanking, apologizing, praising and stating anger. Key words: The Croods movie, illocutionary act, types, context AbstrakTindak ilokusi adalah melakukan suatu tindakan dengan mengatakan sesuatu. Ada lima jenis tindak ilokusi, yaitu: asertif, direktif, komisif, ekspresif dan deklaratif. Film The Croods adalah kisah tentang perjalanan sebuah keluarga yang ingin mencari tempat yang lebih aman bagi mereka untuk hidup. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis dan untuk mengetahui konteks tindak ilokusi dari ucapan Grug di film The Croods. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, karena data penelitian ini berasal dari ucapan-ucapan yang berisi jenis tindak ilokusi dan konteks tindak ilokusi dari ucapan Grug. Data penelitian ini diambil dari 38 sampel ujaran percakapan Grug. Dari hasil analisis dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat 13 ucapan dalam bentuk asertif yang dapat dikategorikan ke dalam menyatakan, menyimpulkan dan menegaskan. Tiga belas ucapan direktif dalam bentuk memerintah, meminta, pemesanan, mempertanyakan dan melarang. Komisif muncul dalam enam ucapan dalam bentuk menjanjikan dan menolak. Jenis terakhir dari tindakan ilokusi adalah ekspresif yang muncul dalam enam ucapan dalam bentuk berterima kasih, meminta maaf, memuji dan menyatakan kemarahan. Kata Kunci: film The Croods, tindak ilokusi, tipe, konteks

Abstract

This research is intended to describe English registers found in Allkpop news articles. The major problem in this research are to find out the English registers found in Allkpop news articles, to identify word formation process undergone by the English registers found in Allkpop news articles, to identify types of changes in meaning served by the English registers found in Allkpop news articles when compared with their lexical meaning in the dictionary, and to identify language functions served by the English registers found in Allkpop news articles. This research belongs to qualitative research employing descriptive method that was performed by collecting data, classifying, analyzing, and then interpreting the data. As the data, the researcher used English registers found in Allkpop news articles that purposively taken in April, 2016. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, there are a total of 30 units of English registers found in Allkpop news articles posted in April, 2016. These 30 units of English registers of words and phrases are found in 503 news articles posted in April, 2016. Second, almost all of English registers that have undergone morphological process are made of compounding process. Third, all of the English registers have different meaning when they are compared with their lexical meaning in the dictionary. The most dominant type of changes in meaning is widening of meaning in which of the total 30 English registers, 21 are identified have undergone widening of meaning process. Fourth, the most dominant language function based on language functions served by the sentences of the news articles that contain English registers is representational function.Keywords: Allkpop, changes in meaning, language function, register, word formation

Abstract

ABSTRACT The aims of this research were to find out the types of illocutionary act of the main characters’ utterances in Mirror Mirror movie by Searle’s theory of illocutionary act and to find the context underlying illocutionary act of the main characters by Hymes’ SPEAKING model in Mirror Mirror movie. This research was descriptive qualitative because the data were the utterances of the characters in the Mirror Mirror movie. There were some steps in collecting the data: downloading the movie script, watching the movie several times, reading and observing the dialogue in the movie and selecting Queen and Snow White’s utterances that contain illocutionary act. In the data analysis, the researcher applied Miles and Huberman’s procedures namely data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. The results of the research show that there are 55 utterances of the main characters that contain illocutionary act. The data were classified into five namely are representatives (4), directives (37), declaratives (0), commissives (2), expressives (12). Of the total 55 illocutionary acts, directives are the most frequent types of illocutionary act because the main characters mostly expressed their utterances in direct way such as by ordering, requesting, asking and commanding. Conversely, the declarative types of illocutionary act were not appeared in this research because the characters that performed the utterance that contain illocutionary act were not selected as the object to analyze. There were eight factors affecting the illocutionary act of the main characters using the context of Hymes’ SPEAKING model. They are setting, participants, ends, act, sequences, key, instrumentalities and genre. Keywords: Speech Act, Illocutionary Act, SPEAKING model by Hymes,Mirror Mirror Movie  ABSTRAK  Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mencari jenis-jenis tindak ilokusi pada tuturan tokoh-tokoh utama dalam film Mirror-Mirror menggunakan teori dari Searle dan untuk menemukan konteks pada tindak ilokusi tokoh-tokoh utama menggunakan SPEAKING model dari Hymes. Penelitian ini merupakan deskriptif kualitatif karena data berupa tuturan tokoh-tokoh di film Mirror Mirror. Ada beberapa langkah dalam mengumpulkan data: mengunggah naskah film, menonton film beberapa kali, membaca dan meneliti percakapan didalam film dan memilih tuturan Snow White dan Queen yang mengandung tindak ilokusi. Didalam data analysis, peneliti menerapkan prosedur Miles dan Huberman yaitu reduksi data, penyajian data, verifikasi/ penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada 55 tuturan tokoh-tokoh utama yang mengandung tindak ilokusi. Data diklasifikasikan menjadi lima yaitu representatives (4), directives (37), declaratives (0), commissives (2), expressives (12). Dari total 55 tindak ilokusi, directives adalah jenis tindak ilokusi yang paling sering muncul karena tokoh-tokoh utama sebagian besar mengekspresikan tuturan mereka secara langsung seperti memesan, meminta, bertanya dan menyuruh. Sebaliknya, tindak ilokusi declaratives tidak muncul dalam penelitian ini karena tokoh-tokoh yang melakukan tuturan yang mengandung tindak ilokusi tidak dipilih sebagai objek untuk dianalysis. Ada delapan faktor yang mempengaruhi tindak ilokusi menggunakan teori konteks SPEAKING dari Hymes. Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of the research is to find out the twin character in The Thirteenth Tale Novel, Adeline March and Emmeline March’s character based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Love and Belongings before they are separated, during the separation period, and after they reunite. This research is categorized as a content analysis research design. This research used hierarchy of needs theory especially love and belongings needs from Abraham Maslow. The result of the research showed that Adeline March and Emmeline March could satisfy the love and belongings needs and have the stable interaction and close relationship before the separation. However, during the separation, their love and belongings needs are interrupted and it causes alteration on their character. In addition, when they finally reunite, Adeline and Emmeline experience different development of the love and belongings needs fulfillment. Adeline is being harsher and Emmeline grows ignorance and independence towards Adeline. Thus, people who are unable to satisfy one of the hierarchy of needs will be experiencing transformation of their character.  Keywords: love, belongings, need, twin ABSTRAK Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menemukan karakter tokoh kembar pada novel The Thirteenth Tale, Adeline March dan Emmeline March berdasarkan teori hirarki kebutuhan cinta dan memiliki dari Abraham Maslow sebelum mereka dipisah, selama masa perpisahan dan setelah mereka kembali bersama. Penelitian ini dikategorikan sebagai penelitian analisis konten. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori hirarki kebutuhan khususnya kebutuhan cinta dan memiliki dari Abraham Maslow. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Adeline dan Emmeline memenuhi kebutuhan cinta dan memiliki dan memiliki interaksi yang stabil dan hubungan yang erat sebelum perpisahan. Tetapi, selama masa perpisahan, kebutuhan cinta dan memiliki mereka terganggu dan menyebabkan perubahan pada karakter mereka. Sebagai tambahan, ketiks mereka akhirnya kembali bersama, Adeline dan Emmeline mengalami perkembangan pemenuhan kebutuhan cinta dan memiliki yang berbeda. Adeline menjadi lebih kasar dan Emmeline menjadi acuh dan bebas terhadap Adeline. Jadi, orang-orang yang tidak dapat memenuhi satu kebutuhan dari hirarki kebutuhan manusia akan mengalami perubahan pada karakter mereka. Kata kunci: cinta, rasa kepemilikan, kebutuhan, kembar

Abstract

ABSTRACT The aims of this research were to find out the intrinsic elements of Mama film and the influences of those intrinsic elements on formulating the theme of Mama film. This research used the intrinsic approach in order to find out the intrinsic elements of Mama film and Lombardi?s theory on identifying a literary work?s theme to find the influences of the intrinsic elements of Mama film on formulating its theme. This research used qualitative method as its research design and the structuralism approach as the tool in analyzing the data. The data of this research were taken from dialogues and narrations of Mama (2013) film script directed by Andres Muschietti. Mama film was a horror film that focusing its theme on mother?s love. As a result, this research showed the intrinsic elements of Mama film consisting of plot (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution), characters (Annabel, Mama, Lucas, Victoria, Lily, Aunt Jane, Dr. Gerald, Jeffrey Desange, and Burnsie), setting (place: hospital, the court, Cabin Halvetia, Clifton Forge, Courtesy of the Institute, and Walls. Time: the year of 1987, Thursday, breakfast time, and night), and point of view which was taken from Victoria?s. Meanwhile, those intrinsic elements had their influences on formulating Mama film?s theme which was: anyone as long as they have the genuine heart, would be able to give the mother?s love. All of the intrinsic elements showed that mother?s love was the theme of this film, given by the three women characters: Annabel, Mama, and Aunt Jane towards Victoria and Lily. Keywords: intrinsic elements, plot, theme, character, setting, point of view ABSTRAK Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengidentifikasi unsur-unsur intrinsik yang terdapat pada film Mama dan pengaruh yang diberikan oleh unsur-unsur tersebut dalam menciptakan tema difilm Mama. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan intrinsik untuk megetahui unsur-unsur intrinsik dari film Mama dan teori Lombardi dalam mengidentifikasi suatu tema dari karya sastra untuk mencari pengaruh unsur-unsur intrinsik film Mama dalam membentuk temanya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif sebagai bentuk penelitiannya dan pendekatan struktural sebagai alat untuk menganalisis data dalam penelitian ini. Data yang dipakai dalam penelitian ini diambil dari dialog-dialog dan narasi-narasi skrip film Mama (2013) yang disutradarai oleh Andres Muschietti. Film Mama merupakan film bergenre horor yang temanya berfokus pada kasih ibu. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa unsur-unsur intrinsik yang terdapat pada film Mama terdiri dari alur (orientasi, konflik, klimaks, antiklimaks, dan resolusi), karakter (Annabel, Mama, Lucas, Victoria, Lily, Aunt Jane, Dr. Gerald, Jeffrey Desange, dan Burnsie), latar (tempat: rumah sakit, pengadilan, Kabin Halvetia, Clifton Forge, institut penelitian, dan dinding). Waktu: tahun 1987, hari Kamis, waktu sarapan, dan malam hari), dan sudut pandang yang diambil yaitu sudut pandang Victoria. Disisi lain, semua unsur intrinsik tersebut memiliki pengaruhnya masing-masing dalam penentuan tema film Mama yaitu siapapun itu, selama ia memiliki perasaan yang tulus, mampu untuk memberikan kasih ibu. Semua unsur intrinsik tersebut menunjukkan bahwa kasih ibu merupakan tema dari film Mama yang berasal dari ketiga karakter perempuan: Annabel, Mama, dan Aunt Jean terhadap Victoria dan Lily.  Kata Kunci: elemen-elemen intrinsik, alur, tema, karakter, latar, sudut pandang

Abstract

ABSTRACT Nowadays, gender issue is one of the issues that often discussed not only in literary works but also in our society. Actually, there are two terms of gender, those are masculinity and femininity. Those two terms are developed into gender stereotype which is structured by environment to differentiate between men and women. By this research, the researcher aimed to analyze the feminine traits of the male character, Quentin Jacobsen in Paper Towns novel and to analyze the supporting factor of Quentin?s feminine traits. This research was qualitative research which used content analysis as the data analysis technique. This research focused on Quentin?s femininity and its influencing factor that was found through the narrations and dialogues in the novel. To analyze Quentin?s femininity this research used Sandra L Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) that was categorized by James L Park Gender-Pattern Chart. Then to reveal the influencing factors of Quentin?s feminine traits, this research used Correlated Factors of Gender Variance by Veale et.al. The result of this research showed that Quentin has nineteen feminine traits according to BSRI such as childlike, feminine, compassionate, sympathetic, shy, affectionate, cheerful, eager to soothe hurt feelings, flatter able, loves children, loyal, sensitive to needs of others, soft spoken, tender, understanding, warm, gentle, gullible, and yielding. Those traits were influenced by parental and abuse factor. Keywords: gender stereotype, femininity, masculinity, influencing factors  ABSTRAK Saat ini, isu tentang gender adalah salah satu isu yang sering dibahas tidak hanya pada karya sastra tetapi juga pada lingkungan sosial kita. Sebenarnya ada dua istilah dalam gender yaitu maskulin dan feminin. Kedua istilah tersebut kemudian menjadi stereotip yang terbentuk dari lingkungan untuk membedakan antara pria dan wanita. Dengan penelitian ini, peneliti bermaksud untuk menganalisa sifat feminin pada karakter laki-laki, Quentin Jacobsen di Paper Towns novel dan untuk menganalisa faktor yang mempengaruhi sifat feminin Quentin. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif yang menggunakan konten analisis sebagai teknik analisis data. Penelitian ini fokus pada sifat feminin Quentin dan faktor yang mempengaruhinya yang ditemukan pada narasi dan dialog novel. Untuk menganalisis sifat feminin Quentin, penelitian ini menggunakan teori dari Sandra L Bem, Sex Role Inventory yang dikategorikan lagi berdasarkan Gender-Patter Chart oleh James L Park. Kemudian untuk mengungkap faktor yang mempengaruhi sifat feminin Quentin, penelitian ini menggunakan teori dari Veale dan kawan-kawan yaitu Correlated Factors of Gender Variance. Hasil yang didapat dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Quentin memiliki sembilan belas sifat feminin berdasarkan BSRI yaitu kekanak-kanakan, feminin, mudah merasa kasihan, simpatik, pemalu, penuh kasih sayang, periang, penenang, mudah dirayu, penyayang anak-anak, setia, peka, santun, berhati lembut, pengertian, hangat, lemah lembut, mudah dibohongi dan penurut. Sifat-sifat tersebut dipengaruhi oleh faktor orang tua dan faktor kekerasan.  Kata kunci: stereotip gender, feminin, maskulin, faktor yang mempengaruhi

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to find the class distinction in character of Adam and Lagavulin and the alienation in character of Adam from the Upside Down movie. This research utilized the method of qualitative research with the technique of observing and used content analysis. The data sources of this research were the script and movie of Upside Down. The data were taken from the dialog of each character and some narrations of Adam indicating the characteristics of class distinction and types of alienation based on the theory of Karl Marx. From the findings of this research, the characters in the movie revealed there were 7 characteristics of class distinction by looking at two types of class, bourgeoisie and proletariat, those are brutal exploiter, the ruler, own the means of production, productive force, the oppressed class, have no means of production, the revolutionary. Also, from the character of Adam, he revealed there were 4 types of alienation with the types as follow, the alienation of the worker in his product, the alienation from the act of production, the alienation from the true essence of our species-being, the alienation of a worker from other workers.

Abstract

Learning style is one of the factors contributing to students’ success on second or foreign language learning. This present research attempted to identify various learning styles used in learning English by administering Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire ( PLSPQ ) for 121 EFL students at English literature study program. The result of descriptive analysis showed that the overall students’ preferred learning style was found to be auditory (M= 37.5, SD = 4.48). Based on gender differences, a majority of male students were auditory students ( M = 38.6, SD = 4.27)  and most of the female students were observed to have tendency to be in the category of kinaesthetic students (M = 3.69, SD = .49). The individual learning style became the least frequent style used by the students ( M = 35.2, SD = 7.53). The findings contribute to the improvement of teaching practice quality. Educators are recommended to employ various teaching styles and design variety of activities that enable students to activate their own learning styles more effectively.Keywords: learning style, Second Language Acquisition (SLA), Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire ( PLSPQ )

Abstract

Until recent decades, the effort on diminishing students’ feeling of anxiety and less self-efficacy toward the writing activities in academic writing course still becomes a great concern for the teachers or practitioners of writing skill especially when dealing with students from multilingual society. These students, who learn English as a foreign language, often demonstrate the influence of their first language when composing a writing, even in a simple paragraph. Facing this situation, the teachers are forced to give attention more to students’ grammatical composition, and as a result of this most of the students give excessive attention only to revise the grammatical mistakes. Based on this situation, they develop “mental block” towards writing and have less interest in writing. To deal with this situation, many studies suggest that teachers need to foster students’ motivation since it is as crucial as developing students’ writing skills through practice. Hence, this paper aims to describe the effectiveness of giving journal writing task and providing comments to students’ writing in the task as a simple but useful way to ignite students’ motivation in writing. The object of the research is the students of academic writing course in Faculty of Cultural Studies of Mulawarman University Samarinda. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study focused on analyzing  flouting of maxim that was performed by characters and the reasons for characters flouting maxims in The Help movie. This study used a qualitative content analysis. The data source was from The Help movie’s script. The data were in the form of dialogues and utterances among characters that contained of flouting maxims. Through the analysis process, the researcher found 32 data containing of all flouting of maxim types: flouting of maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of quality, flouting of maxim of relevance, and flouting of maxim of manner. In addition, the characters flouted the maxims due to several reasons such as competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive. Maxim of quality became the most frequent flouted type and mostly came together with conflictive through making sarcastic utterances. The characters gave sarcastic utterances because the interlocutors kept talking about the speaker’s dislike topic, such as getting marriage and downgrading the job.Key words: Cooperative Principle, Conversational Maxims, Flouting of Maxims ABSTRAKFokus penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisa jenis penyimpangan maksim yang dilakukan oleh karatkter dan alasan mengapa mereka menyimpang maksim di film The Help. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian analisis kualitatif pada konten. Sumber data adalah dari naskah film The Help dan data dalam bentuk dialog dan ujaran antara karakter yang berisi penyimpangan terhadap maksim. Setelah menganalisa data, peneliti menemukan 32 data yang menunjukkan semua jenis maksim telah disimpangkan di film The Help, yaitu maksim kuantitas, maksim kualitas, maksim relevansi, dan maksim cara. Selain itu, karakter menyimpang maksim karna beberapa alasan, yaitu kompetitif, konvivial, kolaboratif, dan konfliktif. Maksim kualitas menjadi tipe yang paling sering disimpang dan hampir semua menggunakan konfliktif sebagai alasan dengan membuat ujaran sarkastik. Ujaran sarkastik dibuat untuk menyinggung lawan bicara karena mereka terus membahas topik yang tidak disukai oleh penutur, seperti menyuruh untuk cepat menikah dan merendahkan pekerjaan.Kata kunci: Prinsip kooperatif, maksim konvensional, pinyampangan maksim.
