Abstract

The appropriateness of learning material for learners’ interests and professions is highly important. The more relevant learning materials and learners’ interests, the easier it is for them to participate in a conversation. This research aimed to investigate the EFL teachers’ and learners’ perception of the negotiated syllabus and the improvement of learners’ English speaking ability. This research employed a descriptive qualitative research method in which data collected through documents and in-depth interviews. The subject of this research consisted of five EFL teachers and ten EFL learners. The qualitative results showed both teachers and learners giving positive responses in learning speaking English through the negotiated syllabus. In addition to learners’ responses, the negotiated syllabus has facilitated the learners in improving their English speaking ability to be taught based on their needs and wants. On the other hand, vocabulary and comprehension, the speaking skills elements, were improved more than other speaking skill elements.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the learning process and student responses to online English learning through the messenger application at SMAN 1 Tinambung, by analyzing the learning process. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. Data collection techniques were observation, interviews and documentation. Researcher took 2 classes at SMAN 1 Tinambung as research subjects, class XII MIA 4 as subjects in the learning process and XII IIS 4 total 24 students as respondents to the learning process through messenger applications. The researcher chose class XII IIS 4 as the respondent because the researcher saw that class XII IIS 4 each student had a different character and was more responsive in giving answers. The results showed that the process of learning English online through the messenger application was inefficient, meaning that the process of learning English through the messenger application could not help students understand learning through the messenger application. Furthermore, the student's response to learning English using the messenger application, from 8 questions in the interview showed that the student's response to learning English using the messenger application was inefficient because they could not understand the learning material taught through the messenger application. In this case, the researcher assessed that the online English learning process through the messenger application was inefficient in learning. In addition, students also sometimes have difficulty learning to use messenger applications.

Abstract

This qualitative case study explored students' experiences and responses towards the implementation of e-learning in English literacy classes at Universitas Sulawesi Barat, Indonesia. The study employed a purposive sampling method, involving 145 students enrolled in reading and writing courses during the 2022/2023 academic year. Data were collected through reflection essays addressing 30 questions, validated by subject matter experts, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed several key themes, including challenges faced by students such as internet connectivity issues and initial difficulties navigating e-learning systems. While e-learning facilitated ubiquitous learning, concerns were raised regarding engagement levels, social connectedness, and comprehension compared to face-to-face interactions. Students valued the flexibility and accessibility of e-learning resources but emphasized the need for relevant, reliable, and interactive materials. The study underscored the valuable role of technology in enhancing e-learning quality through expansive content access, interactive features, and flexibility. However, digital literacy gaps and suitability concerns for certain skills were identified as limitations. Overall, a balanced blended learning approach integrating e-learning with traditional face-to-face elements was recommended to optimize learning outcomes in English literacy education. The findings inform pedagogical practices, institutional strategies, and future research on leveraging educational technology to enhance English literacy instruction effectively.

Abstract

Abstract: This study explores English language learning practices that integrate educational technology (EdTech) and Mandar local culture among the younger generation in coastal areas of West Sulawesi, Indonesia. Employing an exploratory qualitative approach, data were collected through non-participant observations and semi-structured interviews with 20 students and two English teachers. The research framework combined Engeström’s Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (E-CHAT) for classroom observations and the TPACK framework for analyzing teachers’ integration of technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge. Findings indicated that while teachers actively facilitated learning and employed simple technologies such as YouTube, Canva, and LCD projectors, the integration of local culture remains minimal and mostly indirect. Teachers adapted pedagogical strategies to students’ characteristics through game-based learning, translanguaging, differentiated instruction, and peer collaboration. Technology enhanced student engagement and comprehension, particularly through visual and interactive media, though its use is constrained by limited internet access, device availability, and teacher training. Incorporating Mandar cultural elements, such as folktales, traditional practices, and vocabulary, showed potential to make learning more contextual, meaningful, and motivating, fostering both language proficiency and cultural awareness. The study highlights the importance of targeted professional development and infrastructural support to optimize EdTech integration, and provides insights for educators and policymakers to design culturally grounded, technology-enhanced English learning approaches that are both globally relevant and locally meaningful.
