Abstract

This article is as discussion of a study into English teachers’ perceptions towards English as a global language in Indonesia. The purposes of this study are to examine whether the non-native English teachers in Indonesia realize the emerging role of English in the global world especially into the Indonesian schools and to find out how those teachers perceive the impacts of English into Indonesian educational system. Twelve English teachers from four school levels started from primary school to university participated in this study. Qualitative interviews were used for data collection. As a result, the participants’ responses were all consistent saying that with the tough competition in this modern era, English was undeniably very important and learning English for Indonesian students since the early education had been a good practice in order to support the students to get a bright future. Referring to the impacts of the global language, there were only two teachers paid concerns to the negative impacts the global language brought to Indonesian education while the other ten convincingly stated that it only brought positive effects. Recommendations for maintaining the students’ local cultures and identity were given by the participants that were worth considered and informed to all English teachers in Indonesia.

Abstract

This is a qualitative study trying to find out the students’ ability in applying the critical thinking skill while doing the TOEFL ITP reading test. The student participants were 140 university students in one of the private universities in Indonesia. In order to find out the answer, this research was firstly done by looking at the relationship of critical thinking and reading comprehension skill and investigating the level of students’ reading ability by contrasting their reading score to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The study found out that there was an inseparable connection between the students’ critical thinking skill and reading competence and that majority of the student participants were very weak in critical thinking and reading competence skills and so placed at the bottom level of the CEFR.

Abstract

ChatGPT, an AI tool launched in November 2022, has gained popularity among EFL students for assisting in English essay writing. Despite its popularity, little is known about Indonesian students' perceptions of ChatGPT's usefulness, ease of use, and limitations in essay writing. To address this gap, a survey with closed and open-ended questions was conducted on 76 first-year undergraduate students from IT programmes at a private university in Indonesia. Quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistics, and open-ended responses were analysed using thematic analysis. The theoretical framework of the Technological Acceptance Model (TAM) underpinned the analysis. The findings reveal that students found ChatGPT easy to use because it did not demand specific skills and promptly understood and responded to their prompts. ChatGPT was deemed helpful for various reasons, with its ability to provide relevant materials, check vocabulary and sentence structures, generate ideas, and translate Indonesian sentences into English being the top five reasons. However, students also highlighted three main limitations: ChatGPT's tendency to provide irrelevant or unclear answers and its difficulty understanding complex instructions. This study indicates that while students use ChatGPT for English essay assistance, they remain aware that its answers may not always be appropriate. Abstrak bahasa Indonesia  ChatGPT, sebuah alat kecerdasan buatan yang diluncurkan di bulan November 2022, telah mendapatkan popularitas di kalangan mahasiswa yang belajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing dalam membantu penulisan esai Bahasa Inggris. Meskipun sudah populer, persepsi mahasiswa Indonesia terhadap kegunaan ChatGPT masih belum banyak diketahui, seperti tentang kemudahan penggunaan ChatGPT dan keterbatasan ChatGPT dalam penulisan esai bahasa Inggris. Untuk menjawab kekurangan informasi ini, survei dengan pertanyaan tertutup dan terbuka dilakukan pada 76 mahasiswa tahun pertama dari program IT di sebuah universitas swasta di Indonesia. Data kuantitatif dianalisis menggunakan statistik deskriptif, dan jawaban terbuka dianalisis menggunakan analisis tematik. Kerangka teori Model Penerimaan Teknologi (TAM) mendasari analisis ini. Hasil temuan menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa menganggap ChatGPT mudah digunakan karena tidak membutuhkan keterampilan khusus dan mampu dengan cepat memahami serta merespons permintaan mereka. ChatGPT dianggap berguna untuk setidaknya lima alasan utama: kemampuan ChatGPT untuk menyediakan materi yang relevan, memeriksa kosa kata dan struktur kalimat, menghasilkan ide, serta menerjemahkan kalimat Bahasa Indonesia ke dalam Bahasa Inggris. Meski demikian, mahasiswa juga menggarisbawahi tiga keterbatasan utama dari penggunaan ChatGPT: kecenderungan ChatGPT untuk memberikan jawaban yang tidak relevan atau tidak jelas, dan kesulitan ChatGPT memahami instruksi yang kompleks. Studi ini menunjukkan bahwa meskipun mahasiswa memanfaatkan ChatGPT untuk membantu penulisan esai Bahasa Inggris, mereka tetap menyadari bahwa hasil yang diberikan mungkin tidak selalu tepat.

Abstract

This study investigates the writing challenges faced by Indonesian EFL students and examines the effectiveness of peer tutoring in enhancing their writing skills. Through a mixed-methods approach, data were collected via open- and closed-ended survey responses and writing assessments’ scores to 40 students as tutees, and semi-structured interviews with 4 peer tutors. The findings indicate that students struggle primarily with vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and translation. These difficulties are interconnected, as limited vocabulary and grammatical knowledge hinder their ability to construct clear and coherent sentences. The results show that most students found peer tutoring beneficial, as it provided a supportive learning environment, personalized guidance, and reduced the pressure of traditional teacher-student interactions. However, some students reported minimal or no improvement, which could be attributed to factors such as lack of engagement or scheduling conflicts. These findings are analyzed through the lens of Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory, particularly the concepts of the Zone of Proximal Development and scaffolding. The study highlights how peer tutoring facilitates learning by providing social interaction with more knowledgeable peers, enabling students to progress beyond their current level of competence. These insights suggest that educational institutions should integrate structured peer tutoring programs into EFL writing courses and provide teachers with the necessary training and resources to offer appropriate scaffolding tailored to students’ individual challenges. Future research should explore targeted interventions for students with lower engagement and investigate strategies to enhance the effectiveness of peer tutoring in EFL writing instruction. Abstrak Bahasa Indonesia   Studi ini menyelidiki tantangan menulis yang dihadapi oleh mahasiswa EFL Indonesia dan mengkaji efektivitas tutoring teman sebaya dalam meningkatkan keterampilan menulis mereka. Melalui pendekatan mixed-methods, data dikumpulkan melalui survei dengan pertanyaan terbuka dan tertutup serta nilai-nilai penilaian writing dari 40 siswa sebagai tutee, serta wawancara semi-terstruktur dengan 4 tutor sebaya. Temuan-temuan menunjukkan bahwa siswa mengalami kesulitan, khususnya dengan kosakata, tata bahasa, struktur kalimat, dan terjemahan. Kesulitan-kesulitan tersebut saling terkait, karena kosakata dan pengetahuan tata bahasa yang terbatas menghambat kemampuan mereka untuk membuat kalimat yang jelas dan koheren. Hasil-hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar tutee merasa tutoring teman sebaya bermanfaat, karena memberikan lingkungan belajar yang mendukung, bimbingan yang personal, dan mengurangi tekanan dari interaksi tradisional antara guru dan siswa. Namun, beberapa tutee menyatakan sedikit atau tidak ada peningkatan, yang dapat dikaitkan dengan faktor-faktor seperti kurangnya keterlibatan atau konflik jadwal. Temuan-temuan tersebut dianalisis melalui lensa Teori Sosial Budaya Vygotsky, terutama konsep-konsep Zona Perkembangan Proximal (ZPD) dan scaffolding atau pendampingan. Studi ini menyoroti tutoring teman sebaya memfasilitasi pembelajaran dengan memberikan interaksi sosial dengan teman sebaya yang lebih berpengetahuan, memungkinkan siswa untuk maju melampaui tingkat kompetensi mereka saat ini. Hal-hal itu menunjukkan bahwa institusi pendidikan harus mengintegrasikan program tutoring teman sebaya yang terstruktur ke dalam mata kuliah writing EFL dan memberikan pelatihan serta sumber daya yang diperlukan kepada guru untuk melakukan scaffolding yang sesuai dengan tantangan-tantangan yang dimiliki setiap siswa. Penelitian di masa depan harus mengeksplorasi intervensi terarah untuk siswa dengan keterlibatan yang lebih rendah dan menyelidiki strategi-strategi untuk meningkatkan efektivitas tutoring teman sebaya dalam pembelajaran menulis EFL.
