Abstract

Kakawin Lambaᶇ Pralambaᶇ is an Old Javanese poet in the bhāṣa genre written in Lombok and contained in a manuscript coded CP.25 LT-223, in FSUI collection. This work contains lyrics with erotic-romantic themes, although there is a symbolic story of King Airlangga. The purpose of this study is to reveal the content of the text through philological work and identify the symbolic elements of King Airlangga in it. This research is qualitative research using a philological method based on one manuscript or codex unicus. This study also uses a reception approach. After doing philological work on the text, it can be seen that KLP is framed in the kakawin meter, has 8 chapters, has a romantic-erotic theme, and has a uniqueness in the form of a symbolic story of King Airlangga. The symbolism related to King Airlangga can be seen from the mention of his name, his majesty, to the sraddha ceremony being discussed. The element is seen as a collective memory stored in the text. The conclusion of this research is that the symbolic image of King Airlangga in the Kakawin Lambaᶇ Pralambaᶇ text is a form of collective memory in Old Javanese literature in Lombok.

Abstract

Natural disasters as natural phenomena are unavoidable in human’s life. The phenomena of natural disasters can be found in the Pangujanan text. The purpose of this study is to describe the types of natural disasters represented in the Pangujanan text and to reveal the signs or symbols of the disasters. Qualitative descriptive research method is used to reveal the types and signs of a natural disaster phenomenon. In interpreting the sign, semiotic theory is needed to present it systematically. The results of this study indicate that (1) the natural disasters depicted in the Pangujanan text are earthquakes, heavy rains, thunderbolt, hurricanes, and flash floods which are narrated based on Balinese local wisdom, (2) natural disasters in the Pangujanan text as signs have given a rise to some interpretations, namely (a) some natural disasters as results of the practice of reducing rain as narrated in the Pangujanan text, and in this case, disaster mitigation is needed, and (b) some natural disasters as forces of the practice of making rain narrated in the Pangujanan text. The conclusion that can be drawn from the results of this study is that in the past, knowledge about natural disaster phenomena was narrated in a text, and in this study, we look at natural disaster phenomena narrated through the Pangujanan text. The benefit that we can take from this study is as disaster knowledge contained in ancient manuscripts.

Abstract

Lontar Yoga Catur Dewata (YCD) is a literature in Old Javanese that discusses yoga for starting a war. The art of war is mostly concerned only with war strategy (Griffith 2005; Suryohadiprojo 2008). This study found that the art of war that developed in ancient Java used yoga practices with astrological patterns. YCD manuscripts as research objects are recorded in the FS UI collection with the code AH.58 LT-142 and are now stored in the UI's Library. The text of YCD describes the strategy of war to defeat the enemy personally with astrological-symbolic aspects. It deals with counting days, mantras, yogic practices of the existence of deities in sthana, svaravyanjana-nyasa 'syllabic applause', and animal symbolism. The main formulation of this research problem is how to reveal the narrative of astrological-symbolic patterns and the exposure of the relationship with astrological patterns by the art of war in ancient Java. Research requires philological work to produce text editions from YCD manuscripts. The methods used for data analysis are qualitative descriptive and Pierce's semiotic theory to analyze interpretive signs. The results of this study show that the astrological narrative found in the YCD text is related to warfare strategies in ancient Java. It is a local genius and folk science that developed in the community and is recorded in the YCD text.

Abstract

This article addresses an unresolved problem in Javanese cultural heritage, namely the persistence of interpretive fragmentation between archaeological data and philological analysis. Focusing on Bhīma’s transformation from an epic warrior in the Mahābhārata to a sacred spiritual entity during the late Majapahit era, the study examines how the Merapi-Merbabu scriptorium reconstructed his identity through a convergence of material sculptural evidence and esoteric textual formulas. Methodologically, the study adopts an interdisciplinary qualitative design combining philological text editing, iconographic analysis, and cross-media interpretation. Two primary corpora are analyzed: a visual-material corpus consisting of the regional Sukuh-Lawu Mountain-style Bhīma statue, and a textual corpus consisting of the Bhīma Swarga manuscripts from the Merapi-Merbabu scriptorium (specifically codices 1 L 234, 1 L 333, 5 L 5, and 9 L 156), alongside the Nawaruci text. The findings show that material survival alone does not restore cultural coherence, as sacred heritage remains fragmented across media. However, cross-media comparison successfully reconstructs recurring iconographic features, such as the pañcanakha (five-clawed nails) and poleṅ (chequered) cloth, and reconnects sculptural evidence with textual memory. This process uncovers a systematic somatic ontology where Bhīma is reinterpreted as the absolute source of breath (ambĕkan), life (urip), and consciousness (pramāṇa). The article argues that the preservation of sacred heritage becomes most meaningful when it moves beyond object visibility toward cultural legibility, allowing the late Majapahit religious identity to remain interpretable across material statues and textual abstractions.

Abstract

This study examines how the Rājasūyarambha section of the Sabhāparwa Merapi–Merbabu (SP MM) manuscript reconfigures the Indian Rājasūya consecration rite into a political allegory for Javanese royal legitimation. Although previous scholarship has addressed the Vedic origins of the Rājasūya or its later cultural reception, the specific textual mechanisms through which the Old Javanese parwa tradition transforms this ritual into a model of political authority remain insufficiently explored. This research fills that gap by analyzing how the SP MM adapts ritual structure, narrative sequencing, and symbolic motifs to articulate a distinctly Javanese conception of kingship. The study employed qualitative descriptive analysis based on primary manuscript data from three SP MM witnesses (lontar and paper codices). Data were examined through comparative textual analysis, juxtaposing Javanese narrative elements with Vedic ritual sources and Javanese inscriptional terminology. The findings reveal three key mechanisms of allegorization: (1) the transformation of ritual violence into a metaphor for military conquest and territorial unification; (2) the elevation of spiritual recognition as a source of charismatic authority; and (3) the consolidation of social hierarchy through the cakravartin ideal. These mechanisms demonstrate how the SP MM functions as an ideological blueprint that shaped Javanese political thought. The study concludes that the SP MM not only legitimized rulers in its original context but also evolved into a repository of political memory, influencing later Javanese courts and sustaining long-term models of authority.

Abstract

Bedhaya Gandrungmanis is one of the Bedhaya dance which was created in the 19th century during Pakubuwana VIII's reign in Keraton Surakarta. This dance narrates Panji Jayakusuma's text, which symbolizes political chaos in 19th century Keraton Surakarta. The dance itself could represent how Panji roman used by Keraton Surakarta to construct the idea of Javanese kingship. This research tries to put forward an understanding of Bedhaya Gandrungmanis, which had been fragmented and lost, based on manuscripts and oral tradition. This research uses an ethno-philological method, which integrates philological research in anthropological perspectives. Data collecting technique includes collecting philological data on manuscript research in Keraton Surakarta Library, Universitas Indonesia Library, and Pura Mangkunegaran Library, and also collecting ethnographic data by interview, field research, and observation. The earliest version of Bedhaya Gandrungmanis was interpreted as a symbol of royal succession. In the last version of the 20th century, Bedhaya Gandrungmanis was re-interpreted in more romantic terms and lost its political resonance. The Panji story in this dance comes from the Panji Jayakusuma story that formed by Pakubuwana VIII to symbolize cultural change in the 19th century during the Dutch Colonial era. Its meaning had been shifted and fragmented as a result of these cultural changes.

Abstract

Sexual violence is a persistent historical issue recorded in the Sabhaparwa manuscript (31 L 92) from the Merapi-Merbabu scriptorium. Using Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis, Foucault’s power relations, and Butler’s gender performativity, this study investigates Draupadi’s violation as a critique of state law (Rajadharma). Micro-analysis reveals a tiered construction of violence exposing the perpetrators' "fragile masculinity." Meso-analysis highlights a functional shift where the scriptorium reinterprets trauma as motivation for ascetic practice. Macro-analysis uncovers Dharmasunya (a legal void), where institutional failure is met with the supremacy of mandala morality. The study concludes that Sabhaparwa serves as a radical counter-discourse, asserting that state legitimacy collapses when it fails to protect women’s dignity. Ultimately, the text positions spiritual integrity as the final bastion of humanity against systemic political and patriarchal failure.

Abstract

Kakawin Lambaᶇ Pralambaᶇ is one of the lyric poetry texts contained in the palm leaf manuscript coded CP.25 LT-223 which is stored in the manuscript collection of Universitas Indonesia. The manuscript was written in 1799 AD in Lombok using Balinese script. This study aims to reveal the form of yoga sastra and the relationship of religious expression in Kakawin Lambaᶇ Pralambaᶇ with other Old Javanese and Balinese literature. This research is qualitative research using a reception approach. To prepare the object of research, a philological work step was used to extract the Kakawin Lambaᶇ Pralambaᶇ text from the manuscript. The codex unicus method was used because only one witness manuscript is known to contain this text. The Kakawin Lambaᶇ Pralambaᶇ shows the wandering of the poet to do literary yoga (aesthetics-yoga). In addition, there is also the concept of worship in the form of caṇḍi pustaka as a kind of metaphorical expression of the writer to pay homage to the God. This Kakawin also contains an overview of religious concepts related to the love of men and women. In addition, this text is also related to efforts to achieve the unity between human and God.
