Abstract

Abstract

This research examines the influence of Metta Bhavana practice in improving mental health among the congregation of Jakarta Dhammacakka Jaya Sunter Monastery. The aim is to understand the role of Metta Bhavana in the spiritual life of the congregation, which makes it an important part of their religious practice. This research uses a qualitative approach with William James' theory of religious experience and contextual pragmatism. James' theory focuses on how individuals experience and interpret spiritual experiences, while pragmatism evaluates the benefits of practices based on practical effects in daily life. These two theories were used to analyze the impact of Metta Bhavana on the mental health of the community, including personal, emotional, and social aspects. Data were collected through field observations and interviews with seven resource persons: a monastery administrator, a bhante, and five congregants. The results showed that Metta Bhavana helped the community to overcome various mental health problems arising from life issues such as failure, household disharmony, and future anxiety. The meditation practice was shown to reduce stress, improve mental well-being, and strengthen social relationships among community members. Metta Bhavana has a positive impact on the personal, emotional, and life-transforming aspects of the community, in line with William James' theory. This research can serve as a basis for developing broader meditation practices to support the mental and spiritual health of congregants.

Abstract

This research examines how religious people and the Hindu community view the changing roles of women in social and religious contexts at Pura Amrta Jati Cinere. This study also investigates new ways of understanding Hindu scriptures that support gender equality and examines how Hindu religious leaders responded to these changes. The research results show that doctrinally, Hinduism actually supports gender equality through the concepts of Ardhanariswara and Shakti, but patriarchal norms in society still pose an obstacle to its implementation. Currently, Hindu women at Pura Amrta Jati are increasingly valued as ritual leaders and important participants in social life, which has a positive impact on the community in terms of spiritual, social, and cultural aspects. There are still some existing social challenges that need to be reflected upon and become the focus of education to promote progress in gender equality within the practice of Hinduism.

Abstract

Kirtan is one of the main forms of worship in the Sikh religion, carried out through the chanting of shabad (holy words) originating from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji accompanied by music. For Sikhs, Kirtan is not only part of a religious ritual, but also serves as a means to get closer to Waheguru, deepen spiritual experience, and strengthen togetherness within the community. This study aims to examine the implementation of the Kirtan ritual and uncover the spiritual meaning felt by the congregation at Gurdwara Ciputat, South Tangerang. This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological and anthropological approach. Data were obtained through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with religious leaders and Sikh congregations, and literature studies related to the research theme. Data analysis was carried out using Clifford Geertz's symbolic theory to understand the symbolic meaning contained in the practice of Kirtan. The results show that Kirtan has five main spiritual meanings, namely as a medium for conveying emotions, a means of spiritual communication with God, a vehicle for aesthetic appreciation, a source of inner peace, and a form of preservation of Sikh traditions and culture. Viewed from Edmund Husserl's phenomenological perspective, the spiritual experience born through the practice of Kirtan is understood as a process of religious appreciation that fosters self-awareness, ego control, and closeness to Waheguru. Furthermore, Kirtan also contributes to the cultivation of discipline, simplicity, and the internalization of spiritual teachings in the daily lives of Sikhs.
