Abstract

Abstract

Catfish (Clarias sp.) is a highly popular freshwater aquaculture commodity in Indonesia, but production is often constrained by ectoparasite infestations, especially Argulus sp. This study aimed to investigate how different immersion durations of papaya (Carica papaya L.) leaf extract affect the detachment percentage of Argulus sp. on catfish (Clarias sp.) reared in jars. The research used an experimental design based on a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three treatments and three replications. The treatments tested were different immersion durations: A (20 minutes), B (40 minutes), and C (60 minutes) at a constant dosage of 1.0 g/L. The test fish were 8–10 cm in size and artificially infested with Argulus sp. at a density of 5 parasites per fish (10 parasites per jar). The primary parameter observed was the detachment percentage of Argulus sp., with supporting parameters including fish behavior and water quality. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that immersion duration of papaya leaf extract had a significant effect (P<0.05) on the detachment percentage of Argulus sp. The highest detachment percentage was achieved in treatment C (60 minutes), with an average of 93.33%, followed by treatment B (40 minutes) at 76.67%, and the lowest in treatment A (20 minutes) at 56.67%. Behavioral observations during treatment showed clinical symptoms such as fish rubbing their bodies against the container walls, producing excessive mucus, and swimming vertically to the surface. However, no fish mortality occurred during the study. Water quality parameters (temperature, pH, DO, and ammonia) fluctuated slightly after treatment but remained within tolerable limits for catfish. In conclusion, a 60-minute immersion in 1.0 g/L papaya leaf extract is highly effective and recommended for controlling Argulus sp. infestations in catfish.

Abstract

The waters of the Tatah Bangkal swamp have an important ecological and economic role, especially as a habitat for various fish species. However, the entry of domestic waste can cause changes in water quality and have an impact on the survival of aquatic biota. This study aims to determine the impact of domestic waste on water quality and the diversity of fish species in the waters of the Tatah Bangkal Swamp RT 34, Kelayan Timur Village, Banjarmasin City. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. Observations were carried out for 15 days with water quality parameters observed ex situ including Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and ammonia (NH3), while temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and pH were observed in situ. In addition, interviews with local people were conducted to determine changes in fish species in the waters. The results showed that the water temperature ranged from 27.2– 27.6°C with a pH of 7.63–9.09. BOD values range from 16.89–17.57 mg/L, COD 17.85–21.53 mg/L, DO 1.13–1.40 mg/L, and NH3 0.3–0.8 mg/L. Based on Class III water quality standards in PP No. 22 of 2021, several water quality parameters do not meet the standards, especially pH, BOD, and DO. Interviews with the community showed that since 2016 there has been a decline in fish catches, including the loss of local species such as papuyu fish (Anabas testudineus) and catfish (Oxyeleotris marmorata). This decline is thought to be caused by water pollution from domestic waste and the dominance of invasive species, such as catfish (Pterygoplichthys spp.)

Abstract

The nutritional benefits of silkworms have been identified, but the daily percentage of silkworms that provides optimal growth and survival for kelabau larvae has not been thoroughly studied. This study aimed to analyze the effect of different percentages of silkworms on the growth of kelabau larvae. This experimental study was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design at the Mandiangin Freshwater Aquaculture Center, Karang Intan District, South Kalimantan, for 10 days. Three treatments with three replications were fed silkworms at 10%, 20%, and 30% of the total weight of the test fish per day. The 30% feeding rate in treatment C resulted in optimal growth of kelabau larvae, followed by treatment B, while treatment A produced the lowest growth in absolute weight, mean absolute length, and SGR. The highest survival rate (SR) was obtained in treatment C at 95%, followed by treatments A and B at 87%.
