Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate collocation in the classroom. Junior high schools were used for research purposes. The goals of this study were to (1) discover different types of collocation in students' writing. (2) Described the meaning of a collocation found in student writing. The research method used was qualitative. The subject was junior high school ninth grade, and the participants were 32 students from 9F. The data gathered served as a record for the students. There were 125 lexical collocations and 60 grammatical collocations discovered. Except for The GE7, all types of collocation were discovered. Furthermore, there are 10 conceptual meanings, 5 connotative meanings, 4 social meanings, 10 total meanings affective meanings, 1 reflected meaning, 24 collocative meanings, and 6 thematic meanings used in students' writing.

Abstract

Semantic is the branches of linguistics. This researh is about linguistics which analyse about lexical meaning and contextual meaning. By reading of the news article, we can get knowledge about appreciates literature and the background of the language. Therefore, the researcher interested in analyzing the lexical and contextual meaning used in sport article. The researcher dedicated to give the title of this research “An Analysis of Lexical and Contextual meaning on Sport News in Jawa Pos Newspaper”. The problem of this study are: (1) How is lexical meaning used on sport news in Jawa Pos newspaper? (2) How is contextual meaning on sport news in Jawa Pos newspaper? The researcher takes some newspaper edition in of February 2018. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method because the researcher would analysze and interpret the object research of sport article. The step to obtain the data is by collecting sources of the data from sport article in Jawa Pos newspaper. After that selects the sport article and understand the content of the article, the researcher conducts and analyzes the data the last is make conclusion. The result of this research is as follows: (1) every word of lexical meaning used in sports articles aims to attract news readers or newspapers, while (2) every word of lexical meaning can be analyzed using contextual meaning so that the reader can understand the content of the news. The researcher expects this research will be useful for the other researchers who are eager to know more about semantics. Moreover, semantic is an important branch of linguistics that is interesting to be studied, especially when it is applied to literary works, such us news, novel or poem etc.

Abstract

This study examined incorrect spelling in fricative consonants by twenty participants in Manajemen Program Universitas PGRI Madiun's fourth semester class A. The students had difficulty pronouncing a letter in a word, particularly consonants. They are chosen as research subjects to discover the difficulties they have in pronouncing fricatives consonants in their speech, as well as how far they have progressed in producing the sounds. This study used a descriptive qualitative method to describe the English sounds that were causing the students' pronunciation problems. The information gathered served as a record for the students. The researcher used The Oxford Learner's Pocket Dictionary and the theory of English phonetics and phonology proposed by Peter Roach and George Yule to convey the accuracy of the analysis. The total spelling correctly by the research subject was 293 times sounds (53,4 %) and the total spelling incorrectly by the subjects were 255 times sounds (46,6 %), the highest spelling correctly by the student P is 95,8 % and the highest spelling incorrectly by the student L is 95 %, and 8 of 20 subjects could pronounce the sounds correctly.
