Abstract

Chromium (Cr) is an essential mineral for ruminants. Its metabolism and interactions with other minerals has not been widely known. This experiment was designed to evaluate the utilization of minerals and growth of Garut ram fed ration supplemented with Cr and different Dietary Cation Anion Balance (DCAB) and Ca level. Dietary treatments, namely: R0 (Ration with DCAB+14); R1 (Ration with DCAB+14 + Cr 3ppm,); R2 (Ration with DCAB 0 + Ca); R3 (Ration with DCAB 0 + Cr 3 ppm + Ca), were allocated in twenty four of 1.5-2 years old Garut rams in a randomized block design. The results showed that Cr supplementation in rations containing different levels of Ca did not affect feed intake, body weight gain, and dry matter digestibility, but reduced the absorption of Cr and  Ca of the low Ca diet. Supplementation of Cr had no effect on Cr, Ca, Zn, and Mg status in blood and semen of the rams. Level of Cr intake had negative correlation with Ca absorption and positive correlation with blood Cr levels. There is a positive relationship between level of Ca intake with Ca and Mg absorption and blood Ca and Zn levels. Intake of Cr and Ca was not related to the semen Cr and Ca levels.

Abstract

A research on dietary inclusion of urea-impregnated zeolite as slow-release urea (SRU) agent had been conducted to reveal its effect on ruminal fermentation characteristics in local lambs. The research used 24 heads of 7-8 mo old of local male lambs with (20.12±2.1 kg BW) designed upon a randomized block design. Treatments consisted of diets contained no urea, urea, zeolite, and urea-impregnated zeolite. The collected data was analyzed with UNIANOVA and Duncan’s multiple-range test. Results indicated that feeding no urea, zeolite, or urea-impregnated zeolite ration produced lower ruminal ammonia nitrogen than feeding urea ration (P < 0.05). Feeding zeolite ration produced lower ruminal pH than feeding urea ration (P < 0.05). Despite total VFAs were similar across the treatments, feeding urea-impregnated zeolite ration produced lower ruminal acetate, acetate to propionate ratio, or methane production than feeding urea ration (P < 0.05). Feeding urea ration produced the lowest molar proportion of branch-chained VFAs (P < 0.05). Feeding urea ration produced higher plasma urea concentration than feeding no urea ration (2.75 mM vs. 2.16 mM; P < 0.05). In conclusion, zeolite or urea-impregnated zeolite as slow-release ammonia or SRU agent was potential in decreasing ruminal ammonia, pH, acetate to propionate ratio, methane, and maintaining low plasma urea within its physiological range.

Abstract

Non-conventional feeds are generally of low quality so feed fermentation needs to be done to increase its use. This research was conducted to examine the effect of giving fermented feed types on egg quality. This research was conducted in June until August 2018 in the cage of Cibadak poultry in Sukabumi district. The animals used in this study were 24 Brown Strain Isa Brown laying hens as many as 24 birds. The study used a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of 6 treatments and 4 replications. The treatment in this study was R0 = 100% Basic Ration, R1 = 90% Basic ration + 10% fermented non conventional ration, R2 = 80% Basic ration + 20% fermented non conventional ration, R3 = 70% Basic ration + 30% Non ration conventional fermented, R4 = 60% Basic ration + 40% Fermented non-conventional ration, R5 = 50% Basic ration + 50% Fermented non-conventional ration. The data obtained were analyzed using Analysis of variance (ANOVA), if the data showed results that were significantly different (P <0.05) followed by the Duncan test. The results showed that substitution feeding did not significantly influence the egg index, egg white weight, Haugh Unit value, and shell thickness. Therefore, it can be concluded that demonstrable non-conventional feed can be given in ration of laying hens up to 50%.
