Abstract

Cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) is a species of chili that is usually consumed daily and used by the food industry. Although cayenne pepper has important roles, it is often found rotting before it is reached by consumers. Postharvest handling that did not apply good handling practices can cause decomposition of cayenne peppers. This decayed can be caused by the activity of microorganisms, such as bacteria. This study aims to isolate and examine the biochemical properties of spoilage bacteria in cayenne pepper. The stages of the experiment involved: isolation and purification of the bacteria, observation of cell morphology and colonies, and biochemical examination. The results showed that bacterial isolates in cayenne pepper had rod-shaped cell characteristics, shiny colony surfaces, and jagged colony edges. Biochemical characteristics show that these bacteria have enzyme catalase activity, phosphatase enzyme activity, are able to produce carotenoid and lecithinase. However, these bacteria can not hydrolyze starch and pectin. These biochemistry characteristics were not identic with Xanthomonas campestris. Based on the assessment of lactose fermentation, indole, methyl red, and Voges-proskauer, these bacteria could not be identified as Erwinia carotovora.

Abstract

Research on the effect of planting times, using straw, and planting refugia against growth and yield of corn (Zea mays L.) NK 6326variety, it’s pest and diasaes and natural enemies had been conducted in Tulung sub-district, Klaten district, Central Java province. The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of two different planting time based on “pranata mangsa” time (local wisdom) and farmer’s planting time which were combined with using straw and planting refugia against growth and yield of corn, it’s pest and diseases, it’s natural enemies population. This research used a Strip Plot Design with two main treatments with four additional treatments, and five replications. The main treatments were planting time based on farmer habit (A1) and planting time bades on “pranata mangsa” or ancient local wisdom (A2). Additional treatments included: using straw mulch and planting “refugia” (B1), using only straw mulch (B2), planting only “refugia” (B3), and without using straw mulch and without planting “refugia” (B4). The result of the experiment were analyzed by using the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and the Honestly Significance Difference (HSD) test at 95% confidence level. The result of this research showed that: (1) planting time based on farmer’s habit were higher than the planting time based on “pranata Mangsa” against plant height, wet weight of mass, dry weight of mass, weight of seded per cob, weight of seed per plot seed weight per hectare, and 1000 grains weight,(2) planting time based on farmer’s habit combined with using straw mulch and planting “refugia” were higer than planting time based on “pranata mangsa” combined with using straw mulch and palnting refugia against plant height, cob length, wet weight of mass, dry weigt of mass, total number of seed per ear, weight of seeds per cob, weight seeds per plot, weight of seed per hectare, and weight of 1000 grains, (3) planting refugia can increase the natural enemy population.

Abstract

Wheat in Indonesia is the second staple food. Wheat seed are processed to become wheat flour. From wheat flour can be made noodle, bread and other foods. One factor that is affected wheatproductivity is competition between wheat and weeds. The aim of the research were to know theaffect of weeding times toward growth and yield of wheat of Genotype 10, and to know weedingperiods that were critical periods of free weed of Genotype 10 wheat. This research usedRandomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with eight treatments and five replications. Thetreatments tested were four periods of wheat crop without weeds and four periods of wheat cropwith weed. Research result data were analyzed by using analysis of variance (ANNOVA) andhonestly significant different (HSD) at 95% significant level. Research results showed that: (1)both periods with and without weeds affected number of tillers per clump, seed weight perpanicle, and (2) Seed weight per clump in period of weed controlled was highest significantlycompared with seed weight per clump in period with weed. It could be concluded that criticalweed- free periods of Genotype 10 of wheat were between 14 days until 42 days after sowing.
