Abstract

This paper aims to examine the religiosity of Muslim professional workers and the position of religion for them in their daily life. This paper takes two steps: first, studying the religiosity of those Muslim professional workers within their workplace by using Peter L Berger’s framework of the Construction of Social Theory; second, examining the thoughts and expressions of those workers when they are faced with a dilemma in work conditions through in-depth interview. This study concludes that the Muslim professional workers who live in the modern society with diverse conditions of a dilemma between the religious values and the demands of expertise in their job tend to be more faithful to their religious beliefs. Berger’s thesis about secularization does not occur in the case of workers of this kind. Religion stays functional for these workers through deconstruction strategy as it is assumed by Derrida. The so-called “traces of God” can still be seen in these workers in Surabaya.

Abstract

Da‘wa is not merely concerned with theology and religion but also addresses the socio-political aspects. These aspects are highly dependent on the background of the da‘i or preacher and the public space of politics in the religion which conveys the da‘wa message. Using a qualitative method, this research focuses on three questions, which are the priority of the da‘wa message, and the suitability of the da‘i qualification in the contemporary Netherlands. The third question entails how the politics of religion support the life of Muslim migrants, and for this issue, some mosques and Muslim communities were chosen for data collection. Subsequently, this research showed that the most delivered topics of da‘wa message were about aqīdah or creed, sharī‘ah, which is the Islamic law, and then akhlāq or ethics. Also, the background of the da‘i heavily influenced the selection of the da‘wa material and involved two major streams, which were Salafi and Sunni. The da‘wa activity by the Sunni da‘is tended to be more open, compared to Salafi activities. Concerning this religion’s politics, the Dutch government launched a program, which involved the Pillarization of Islam. The program was to enable the government to maintain control over the activities of Muslim migrants and was also for the benefit of the multi-origin and multi-ethnic ones. However, this measure proved to be ineffective, and da‘wa has continued without following this pillarization program, as being a Muslim is a result of personal will, and not just because of a sermon.

Abstract

This study aims to identify community religious traditions and opportunities for radicalization in inland and coastal communities of East Java. The method uses mixed methods and a qualitative model to describe the community’s religious traditions and the potential for radicalization. Meanwhile, data was collected by semi-open interviews with 110 informants, analyzed using a flow model and calculated using descriptive statistics. According to the study’s findings, East Java’s religious practices in both inland and coastal communities are manifested in the traditions of aqīdah, muā‘malah, and worship rituals. Traditions of aqidah are carried out with the understanding ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā‘ah that was developed by Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah. Mu‘āmalah (social) tradition is based on the teachings of Kiai, teachers, and parents and is based on local wisdom. Ritual worship follows the understanding of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā‘ah, which means performing mah}d}ah worship in a disciplined fashion: prayer, zakat, fasting during Ramadan and performing hajj for those who can afford it. Additionally, the map shows the chance of being radical and moderate in both the inland and coastal communities in East Java; the chance of radicalism is 21.60%, of being uncertain is 13.13%, and of being moderate is 65.28%.

Abstract

The institutional transformation of the State Islamic Institute (IAIN) into the State Islamic University of Sunan Ampel (UINSA) Surabaya has generated on social mobility, horizontal mobility in particular, and has changed the communication patterns of the campus community and villagers. This study discusses the sociology of communications of campus community and citizens of Jemur Wonosari post-transformation of UINSA.
