Abstract

Reading comprehension is the ability to analyze and understand the text in some reading context. This ability is taught to generalize the ability and share information in the reading context. In this research, the researcher applied Jigsaw Technique to solve the problems that were faced by the students. This research was conducted in order to improve students’ reading comprehension in descriptive text through Jigsaw Technique in the first grade students of SMA NU AL-FUDLOLI Ganjaran Gondanglegi Malang 2017-2018. In conducting this research, the researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the method of research. The researcher conducted this research in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of three meetings. The researcher used Jigsaw Technique to make pleasant atmosphere during teaching and learning process of reading, and more importantly to improve the students’ reading comprehension especially on reading descriptive text. The subject of this research was the students of first grade students in SMA NU AL-FUDLOLI. The instruments to collect the data were interview, observation checklist, and reading test. The result of this research showed that by using Jigsaw Technique in teaching reading descriptive text, the researcher could improve the student’s reading comprehension especially descriptive text. Their responses showed that they were interested to learn reading subject because they felt easier to read using Jigsaw Technique. Based on the result of cycle 1 the average of their score is 67. The result of cycle 2, the average of their score is 76.

Abstract

Abstract This paper shows the linguistic aspect in term of discourse analysis in the lyrics of song. Those aspects are cohesion device and grammatical cohesion. Cohesion devices divided into two descriptions, those are; grammatical and lexical cohesion devices. Grammatical cohesion contains reference, ellipsis, substitution, and conjunction while lexical cohesion contains collocation and reiteration. This research analyzes the lyrics from the soloist band namely Alec Benjamin entitle “Six feet apart”. After analyzing grammatical and lexical cohesion of six feet apart’s lyric, the result shows that the kinds of grammatical and lexical cohesion exist in the lyric. The first kind of grammatical cohesion which is found is reference. The kinds of references namely personal, adverbial demonstrative, selective nominal demonstrative, and comparative reference are found in the lyric. The most frequent reference which is used in the lyric is personal reference. The usage of cohesive devices is so important to make meaningful language to the lyrics of the song. The cohesion devices make the text united.. The function of lexical cohesion within the stanza in the lyric of six feet apart song is making a relationship and also it is used to express and to stress the singer’s idea. Abstract

AbstractSecond Language to foreign language acquisition is needed to achieve success in education, workor career and other goals. However, reading a text in a foreign language for non-native speakersrequires language transfer from a foreign language to the mother tongue and then only the meaningand content can be understood. Mother tongue is a language that is absorbed by children up to theage of 3 years. The language transition process requires an appropriate strategy with access tolanguage absorption that is able to facilitate language transfer in the reader's mindset. Analyzingthe strategy and process of language transfer from a foreign language to a mother tongue requiresa measurable and explainable concept or pattern. Analysis of the process of understanding aforeign language is not an easy thing. Due to the difficulty of observing and analyzing the processof understanding a foreign language, the researcher tries to reveal what the role of the mothertongue is in learning and understanding a foreign language. Retrospective interviews with 5Chinese students, 5 Japanese students, 5 Arab students and 5 Indonesian students were carried outby the researcher accompanied by a translator/interpreter by asking some questions about whenforeign language readers use their mother tongue cognitively and how to use their mother tongue ina cognitive way. This cognitive function can help understand the meaning of foreign language texts.The results of this finding contribute to the theory of the process of understanding foreignlanguages from a sociocultural point of view.Keywords: Mother language, Language acquisition, English Learning Process

Abstract

The Objective of this study was describe kind of santri’s character in Boarding Islamic School Miftahul Ulum based on 18 Characters. This research used a Qualitative research. The technique of collecting data was observation, interview and documentation. The object of this research is Santriwati’s Miftahul Ulum. The findings of this research are as follow: Miftahul Ulum Islamic Boarding School applies eleven characteristics that shape the character of santriwati, such as religious, honest, social care, discipline, responsible, tolerance, smart, hard work, friendly, spirit, love to read. These eleven characters are very helpful in the process of forming the characters santiwati. Because of this, the ustadzah familiarizes santriwati with various activities related to these characters. There are some santriwati characters who do not enter 18 character namely smart and spirit. And there are also some characters of the santriwati found in character 18 but are not found in the character of santriwati. They are democratic, creative, independent, love peace, curiosity, spirit of nationality, value attainment, caring for the environment and love country.
