Abstract

This study aims to explore the challenges of primary school teachers in teaching online English to young learners in the pandemic era and teachers’ views toward teaching online English. The teachers also provide the solutions to overcome the problems. This is a qualitative research that employs a case study as the approach. The data are obtained through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with 20 English teachers of primary schools. The results show many challenges emerged from three sides: instructional activity, time management, and student assessment. Challenges of instructional activity cover students’ motivation, English levels of student proficiency, communication, cooperative learning, and teaching writing. Time management challenges include having a limited amount of time and providing feedback. Meanwhile, student assessments assess students’ attitudes and cognitive skills. This study suggests the administrators and authorities of education policymakers evaluate the guidelines to enhance the quality of online teaching, especially for elementary schools.

Abstract

Abstract One of the skills vocational education students must master in English courses is understanding the language of instruction or procedures in English. A total of 24 vocational education students at the Politeknik Negeri Lhokseumawe participated in filling out the questionnaires distributed online. Data were collected using the convenience sampling technique for two weeks from the date of August 26, 2020 until September 9, 2020. The data were analyzed qualitatively using the Miles and Huberman model. Data analysis consists of four stages, extensive coding, pattern coding, distilling and making propositions. The results showed that the majority of vocational education students at PNL were visual learners. The inclusion of pictures in the English instruction material is very helpful in understanding the text of the instructions given. Students prefer English instruction materials that are equipped with pictures rather than just pictures or just text. Students also use google translate to understand unfamiliar words to understand English instruction texts. Abstract

Teachers bring various experiences to the classroom, and their beliefs about ‘creative teaching’ or ‘good teaching’ practices are frequently influenced by various factors, including their own teaching experiences, individual motivation, and organizational constraints. This context frames their early efforts to develop creative practices, and recognition of influences further affects the level of creativity displayed by teachers. This study aims to ascertain the factors that affected teachers’ creativity in English language teaching (ELT) in contemporary Indonesian higher education. We interviewed twenty Indonesian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers about the factors influencing their creativity and their motivations for teaching creatively. We identified three factors which influenced teachers’ creativity: their knowledge and teaching experiences, their motivation, and the role of technology. These three factors served as a guide for teachers regarding how they might integrate creativity into their teaching practice. Additionally, Indonesian EFL teachers believed that their creativity was necessary to assist students in learning, create an enjoyable learning experience, and encourage students to be creative. This belief appears to be partially due to the affordance of the rapidly changing digital environment which enables student-centred and self-directed learning. Finally, this study indicates that creativity is not instinctive to teachers; however, they can nurture their creativity by accepting their innovative ideas through developing their abilities to teach creatively.

Abstract

This study examines community perceptions and levels of interest in the establishment of a state polytechnic in the West-South Aceh region, particularly following the collaborative initiative of D4 programs by Akademi Komunitas Negeri Aceh Barat (AKN Aceh Barat) and Politeknik Negeri Lhokseumawe (PNL). Using a quantitative cross-sectional design, data were collected through an online survey completed by 242 respondents. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, and one-way ANOVA were applied to assess perceptions across three key indicators: the urgency of establishing a polytechnic, personal interest in attending, and family interest in polytechnic education. Results indicate overwhelming support across demographic groups, with over 93% consider the establishment urgent, and more than 84% expressed personal or familial interest. Although men showed significantly higher personal interest than women, no significant differences were observed by region or education level. Community preferences for mining, maritime, and informatics programs demonstrate a clear connection to the region’s workforce demands and industrial profile. These findings provide strong empirical support for upgrading AKN Aceh Barat into a state polytechnic, addressing both educational and regional workforce development needs.

Abstract

AbstractThis paper focuses on the authenticity of an automated essay grader in determining English writing competence in vocational higher learning students in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting. The study was done in Politeknik Negeri Lhokseumawe, Indonesia where first-year second-semester students of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department participated. The primary dataset consisted of 40 student essays that were gathered at the final writing examination. The essays were graded with the use of an AI-based essay grading through the help of an essay grading tool of Writecream (app.writecream.com), which would provide automated writing scores on the basis of the linguistic and structural characteristics. In an attempt to authenticate the validity of the AI scoring results, this study has used two benchmarking frameworks. The International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English (ICNALE Online) with special attention to the ICNALE-GRA database was utilized as a corpus-based reference, and it represented the standardized levels of writing proficiency of learners. Second, the Writing Level Analyzer (CWLA) based on CEFR was used where the essays were categorized into the bands of the writing proficiency on the CEFR-J framework. The use of CVLA3 desktop version assisted in the classification of the essays into those bands. The validation process was conducted against the AI-generated scores against CEFR-J level classifications and corpus-based proficiency standards. The results showed that the automated essay assessment system showed a validity rate of 62% which showed moderate level of validity with the results of the CEFR-J aligned assessment. This implies that AIs scoring devices can be of service when it comes to vocational EFL formative writing assessment. Nevertheless, the moderate validity raises the importance of using automated systems alongside human judgment particularly in high-stakes measures as with final examination. Altogether, the research adds practice to the existing body of research on AI-aided language testing and underlines the relevance of validation based on CEFR in education. Keywords:AES; CEFR-J; CWLA; ICNALE-GRA corpus; EFL writing assessment.
