Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate teachers’ opinion and their attitudes toward the integration of culture and English language education. More specifically, this study explores how and to what extent these opinions and attitudes are reflected in their classroom applications. Data were collected from 31 teachers of English Department at one of universities in Indonesia using questionnaire, interview, and observation. Findings revealed that teachers were willing to support the language and cultural objectives, but they had conflicts when having to prioritize language teaching or cultural teaching. Teachers informed that limited class time, curriculum requirements, lack of cultural issues in the textbooks, and their lack of cultural knowledge were the main constraints for the integration of cultural teaching into EFL. This study shows the importance of integrating culture & intercultural dimension into EFL instruction in order to help facilitate both language learning and effective communication.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the reflection of social values using the analysis of Sociology of Literature under the character of Frederick Wentworth in Persuasion by Jane Austen. This study was a qualitative descriptive study using the approach of Sociology of Literature. The data was collected through note-taking method which was primary obtained from the novel of Jane Austen Persuasion. It was then analysed using the sociology of literature by only focusing on the sociology of the work aspect. The results of the study showed that there were discriminations and judgements towards the character of Frederick due to his social status. However, Frederick's character who was dealing with a society that prioritised great importance on social status was not affected by the assessment directed at him. The character of Frederick has reflected the value of social, such as tolerating and dedicating as the opposition of values that he had to receive. Hence, the judgement which emerged had no bad influence at all in the development of his character.

Abstract

This research aims to see how Mariam as the main character in the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns can defend herself against the conflicts she faced. Khaled created the character of Mariam to support the storylines, which actually focuses on showing the war conditions in Afghanistan around the 1970s. The research uses psychoanalysis approach and Freud's defense mechanism theory to analyze Mariam's personality and see how she can survive all the conflicts. This is also use qualitative method to analyze the data. The data is taken from the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini itself by looking at the text, narration, conversation, plot and setting in the story. Thus, the result of this research indicate that there are several conflicts faced by Mariam, namely social conflict where she is not accepted in the society because of her status as an illegitimate child, conflict with her mother who regrets giving birth to her, conflict with her husband who commits domestic violence and also remarry and conflict with herself where she often blamed herself for all the bad things in her life. In dealing with some of the conflicts above, the researcher found that Mariam overcomes her anxiety and fear problems using defense mechanisms including; repression, reaction formation, denial, displacement, projection, rationalization, undoing, and fantasy. Those defense mechanisms keep her alive and accept the fate that God had been gave to her.

Abstract

Enola Holmes 2, a film set in the Victorian era, portrays these inequalities through its female characters who face an environment full of gender-based restrictions. This article focuses on three main characters—Enola Holmes, Sarah Chapman, and Mira Troy—analyzing how their experiences reflect various aspects of gender inequality that have persisted over time. This study analyzes gender inequality in Jack Thorne’s Enola Holmes 2 through the lens of Fakih’s theory, which identifies five manifestations of gender inequality: stereotypes, subordination, marginalization, violence, and double workload. The research applies feminist literary criticism, focusing on the socio-economic conditions and experiences of women, while also linking the findings to the reality of women in the Victorian era. Using a qualitative method, the study examines the dialogues and interactions of the three female characters in the film—Enola Holmes, Sarah Chapman, and Mira Troy—as representations of women who experience gender inequality. From the analysis, 16 instances of gender inequality were identified, illustrating the challenges faced by women during both the Victorian era and in the context of the film’s narrative. These findings reveal how gender inequality persists and is reflected in the experiences of the female characters, highlighting its continued relevance in both historical and modern contexts.

Abstract

This study delves into the users’ state of mind with regard to the use of online platforms for educational purposes, specifically in the context of higher education. The purpose of this study, which employs a survey method, is to investigate how students perceive online teaching and learning in higher education and contribute to the growing collaboration between higher education researchers studying 21st-century learning concepts and Indonesian universities, which are increasingly implementing online teaching and learning. This study analyses various significant problems, including the process of online teaching and learning at universities, the difficulties of its implementation, and the users’ perceptions and attitudes towards the implementation of online teaching and learning. Overall, it is found that both students and lecturers prefer offline, face-to-face interaction in class rather than the online system. It is possible to state that both the lecturers and the students who have been attached to the conventional method of instruction and learning process are not prepared for the shift from offline to online learning. Even though online learning has been implemented, there is still a lack of consensus on the best practices for an effective online classroom. In addition to this, the fact that the institution does impose any fixed regulation also plays an important role in this. Keywords: State of Mind, Online Teaching and Learning, Higher Education

Abstract

This research examines the representation of postfeminist values in the 2014 animated film Tinker Bell and the Pirate Fairy. The objective is to explore how the film’s dialogues portray postfeminist values through the characters and narrative. Using a descriptive qualitative method and feminist literary criticism, the study applies the postfeminist theoretical framework proposed by Rosalind Gill. The analysis focuses on five key values: empowerment, individualism and choice, redefinition of gender roles, collaboration and solidarity, and resistance to patriarchal structures. The findings reveal that the film presents female characters, especially Zarina and Tinker Bell, as intelligent, independent, and emotionally expressive figures who challenge traditional gender norms. However, the representation of empowerment remains tied to neoliberal ideals, where success is achieved through personal effort rather than structural change. This research contributes to feminist media analysis and offers insight into how children’s animated films embed ideological messages about gender and identity.
