Abstract

The effect of PGF2α on the fertility of male Wistar rat (Rattus norvegicus) has been investigated . Sexually mature male rats with a body weight of 200 to 300 g were used . Sperm numbers and quality, and mating ability, were observed after rats were subcutaneously injected with 1.5 ; 2.0 and 3.0 mg/kg body weight of PGF2α dissolved in 0.4 ml saline solution daily for 11 consecutive days for the treatment groups , respectively. Contraction of caudal epididymis and vas defferens were recorded using myograph and physiograph, whereas the concentration of PGF2α was 0.4 and 0.6 mg/ml dissolved in Tyrode. The result showed that motility and number of normal as well as abnormal sperm decreased in conjuction with the increasing dosage of PGF2α. The contraction of organs which occurred when solution was added, showed that PGF2α increased the tonus tensions of caudal epididymis as well as vas deferens. Abstract

A laboratory experiment on carp (Cyprinus carpio) given a shredded coconut mixed diet has been conducted. Carp aged 4 – 5 months (n = 50; weight = 24,46-25,78 g), were kept individually in each aquarium (50x30x30 cm). The waste shredded coconut was mixed with commercial fish feed. Five concentrations (w/w) of mixed diet were given as treatment, i.e.: 30% (P30), 40% (P40), 50% (P50), and 60% (P60). Controlled fish was only given commercial feed. The experiment was done within 10 weeks with five replicates. Fish were fed twice daily as much as 10% of body weight. Measurements on oxygen consumption rate and body weight were done weekly. The fish were kept from food for 24 hours prior to measurements. The hemoglobin concentration was measured at the beginning and at the end of the experiment only. ANOVA was used for statistical tests. Results showed that the oxygen consumption rate of the treated fish was not different from the controlled fish. Relative growth rate decreased significantly. The average growth rate of fish treated with P30, P40, P50, P60, were respectively 0.042%, 0.041%, 0.031% and 0.018%. Growth rate of controlled fish was 0.104%. There was n o difference on the hemoglobin concentration measured at the end of the experiment (7.89 mg/dl) compared to the value at the start (7.91 mg/dl) of the experiment. It can be concluded that waste shredded coconut mixed diet might be used as fish feed. However, some improvements should be done on the composition of nutrition in the diet to increase the fish growth rate.

Abstract

The in vitro effect of gossypol on the small intestinal contractility of Swiss Webster mice have been examined. Thirty six sexually mature male mice with body weights of 30,5-36,5 g. were used and the tested concentrations of gossypol were 5, 7.5, and 10 ppm. Segments of the small intestine such as: duodenum, jejunum and ileum were isolated and immersed in Tyrode solution at 37 oC. The contractions of these organs were measured and recorded using a myograph and physiograph. As control, the contractions of these organs were recorded in Tyrode solution for 360 seconds. The solution was then replaced by gossypol-Tyrode solution and the contractions were recorded again for the next 360 seconds. The results showed that gossypol increased shortly and followed by gradual decreases of tension in all small intestinal segments. Gossypol also lowered the frequency of the intestinal contractions when compared with control. The strongest action of gossypol was found when the intestines were treated in 10 ppm, compared to the action of those treated with 7.5 ppm and 5 ppm. It is assumed that gossypol impaired peristaltic movements of the intestines and thus decreased digestibility of mice.

Abstract

This study discusses the characteristics, constraints and factors of production of Trusmi written batik SMEs in Trusmi Wetan and Trusmi Kulon Villages, Plered District, Cirebon Regency. The objectives of this study are: (1) analyzing the characteristics of Trusmi handmade batik seen from business owners, the output/products produced and marketing, (2) analyzing the difficulties/obstacles experienced by Trusmi handmade batik UKM, (3) analyzing the influence of factors -factors of production against the amount of batik production Trusmi. This study uses statistical analysis tools both descriptive and inferential. Descriptive analysis is used to determine the characteristics, difficulties and obstacles experienced by SMEs in batik writing. Multiple linear regression is used to determine the effect of variable raw materials, wages, labour, education and business experience on the amount of Trusmi written batik production in Trusmi Wetan and Kulon villages, Plered District, Cirebon Regency. The results showed that (1) the characteristics of owners/entrepreneurs of Batik Tulis Trusmi as many as 15 (50%) craftsmen started their business background from generation to generation/inheritance and as many as 15 (50%) the rest were independent business backgrounds. The level of craftsman education is dominated by high school and the average age of the craftsman is 51 years. Products produced by craftsmen in the form of hem/shirt, sarong, shawl and marimbist in their marketing crafters supply several showrooms in Trusmi and are sent to several regions, (2) batik artisans experience difficulties and obstacles in terms of capital, raw materials and human resources, (3 ) multiple linear regression using individual test (t-test) shows that raw materials and wages have a positive and significant effect on the amount of batik production, while the amount of labour, education and business experience does not affectt
