Abstract

This paper will describe the study of stereotypes in persons with disabilities, from the perspective of intercultural communication. During this time people with disabilities often get a bad stigma and are still underestimated as a party that needs to be pitied. For families, sometimes people with disabilities are considered a disgrace that needs to be covered up. The assumption that people with disabilities are different and even abnormal is shown as a form of negative perception that is nothing but part of the stereotype. Stereotype is not only from the labeling process of the community, but also the labeling process carried out by the diffable to himself who is aware of the disabilities that he has. Communication difficulties will arise from stereotyping, which generalizes people based on little information and shapes people's assumptions based on their membership in a group. In other words, stereotyping is the process of placing people into established categories, or judgments about people or objects based on appropriate categories, rather than on their individual characteristics. In the study of intercultural communication, stereotyping is the categorization of a group in general by ignoring individual differences. These groups include: racial groups, ethnic groups, the elderly, various professional occupations, or people with certain physical appearance. Stereotype does not view individuals in the group as unique people or individuals

Abstract

This study examines how Madurese women utilize culturally ingrained communication methods to achieve empowerment through community-based ecotourism in Sumenep Regency, East Java. The research employed a qualitative ethnographic case study based on the Fiji Vanua Research Framework (FVRF), engaging 15 women entrepreneurs through participant observation, focus group discussions, and Talanoa-style interviews tailored to Madurese cultural conventions. The results indicate that informal social settings—such as pengajian (religious study groups), arisan (rotating savings groups), and cangkrukan (casual gatherings)—function as reliable platforms for discourse, identity negotiation, and communal learning. Instead of challenging patriarchal standards, women recontextualize traditional values such as bhuppa', bhabbu', guru, and rato to validate their economic and civic participation. These communication tactics promote social visibility, reciprocal support, and incremental changes in gender dynamics. The study underscores the significance of culturally rooted empowerment communication in traditional societies and enhances participatory development theory by highlighting localised, non-confrontational avenues for women's agency.

Abstract

ABSTRACT    This research aims to analyze the influence of stereotypes of criminality on social interactions between the Surabaya community and Madurese migrants, focusing on motor vehicle theft cases in Surabaya City. The research method used a qualitative approach with a case study design, involving in-depth interviews with local people, Madurese migrants, and community leaders, as well as secondary data analysis from media coverage and related literature. The results showed that negative stereotypes of Madurese migrants were formed through media narratives and personal experiences, which then manifested in the form of discrimination, social segregation, and decreased intergroup trust. The tendency of Madurese migrants to form homogeneous groups as a response to prejudice actually widens social gaps and inhibits integration. This finding reinforces Bar-Tal's (1997) stereotyping theory and Goffman's (1963) stigma, while confirming the negative impact of generalization of criminality on social cohesion. This study recommends intercultural education, a more responsible role for the media, and inclusive policies to mitigate stereotypes and promote harmonious social interactions.   Keywords : criminality stereotypes, social interaction, Surabaya society, Madurese migrants.
