Abstract

The relation between ritual and socio-political environment should become a deep reflection. Rituals which take place in order for salvation, harmony, and natural balance instead generate the ambigue and ironic situation. Rituals had been going on amazingly but the social as well as natural disasters seems go on continually. In Bali, religious rituals that formerly guarded by mantra-mantra (spiritual wordings) recently enstead by a group of Pecalang (tradition guardian in Bali) and metal detector (at the time of Pamarisudha Karipubhaya Bali Blast of 2002 and 2005). Nowadays Balinese are eager to perform rituals spectacularly. But instead, Bali now is struck by continous disaster, not only the disaster came from external sources but also the internal ones.***Hubungan antara ritual dengan lingkungan sosial politik harus menjadi bahan renungan yang dalam.

This article discusses oral traditions of indigenous theologies that various communities in Papua believe about their God as life savers. The indigenous theology has historically played an important role in shaping the knowledge of religion, customs, and culture into their life orientations. The indigenous theologies include Ugatamee, Hai and Koreri and their oral traditions experienced transformation in the presence of religion. The tension between indigenous theology and the values of the gospel in Christianity in particular has a serious impact on religious orientation as well as the culture of society. The spread of Christianity, especially the one that touches people's lives, leads to a great transformation of people's trust in God. The great transformation was in the land of Papua, one of which was brought about by the influence of religious education, which subsequently played a major role in the construction of their religious life and experience.

Abstract

Abstract

Balinese customary villages are at the center of the state’s strategy for mitigation of Covid-19. Relations between customary villages and the state predate colonial times. The historical dynamics have shown that the traditions and cultures of customary villages (desa mawacara) will always exist within the shadow of the state (negara mawatata). The symbolic narrative of desa mawacara, negara mawatata illustrates the governmentality that the state exercises over the villages. Regional Regulation No. 4/2019 on Customary Villages in Bali and the formation of the customary village-based task force were rational choices made by the Governor of Bali to place the villages at the forefront of the province’s strategy against the pandemic. This article employs Li’s (2012) adaptation of Foucault’s concept of governmentality in its analysis. Discourse analysis was conducted with regards to information extracted from mass media, indepth interviews, and participatory observation. This article argues that the state’s policies for Balinese customary villages are deeply entrenched in its long history of intervention and cooptation. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the state has been well aware of the extensive influence that customary villages hold over their communities. The state utilizes this reality to exert its authority.

Abstract

Abstrak The biggest challenge of anthropology, especially in frontier areas (front lines) like in Papua, is to place it in the context of the vortex of the meaning of socio-cultural transformation experienced by humans themselves. Anthropology, thus becoming a "weapon" in the face of the inevitable social and cultural changes. This article reflects the power of ethnography in the long span of the journey of reproducing Papuan cultural knowledge. This study argues that ethnographic reproduction produced with a colonialistic perspective will lack power and language in describing the complexity and transformation of culture in the Land of Papua. The reality of the Papuan people is high mobility, interconnected with other cultural ethnicities with cultural diversity, and their relationship with the power of global investment. It was during these meeting moments that the Papuan people had the opportunity to think about their renewal of identity and culture.
