Abstract

The aspect of expression is very important in design ideas, amidst the pressure of programming and procedural thoughts nowadays. The expression is a performance that was born from the deepening of a strong identity that makes us further involvement. Freehand drawing is believed to be an important activity that cannot be separated from an architectural design process. Freehand drawing is proven to be an effort that will increase awareness to produce creative thoughts that remain logical. The natural and organic character of a freehand drawing with its flexibility will be able to express the unique value of each design idea. It is very different when compared to the stereotypical technical line of mechanics. This paper aims to discuss the role of freehand drawing in improving the quality of expression during the design process. The discussion was carried out through a qualitative descriptive analysis based on the experience of carrying out freehand drawing courses and several freehand drawing learning and practices. Abstract

Waste is a serious environmental problem worldwide. Waste can refer to various types of materials or substances resulting from human, industrial, agricultural and other activities. The waste problem covers aspects such as management, environmental impact and human health. In this paper, an Islamic perspective on waste recycling in building architecture is discussed. Case studies involving architectural works with the use of building waste reflect the principle of recycling in practice. Waste buildings are materials or structures which have been retired for their original purpose but which still have the potential to be reused with little or no major alterations. Architectural works such as households, community facilities, or even commercial buildings can use used materials that are still usable to reduce demand for new resources. However, in implementing the recycling concept in architecture, it is necessary to pay attention to several aspects, such as structural safety, quality of used materials, and compatibility with the surrounding environment. Islam encourages the use of resources wisely and in moderation, as well as minimizing negative impacts on the environment. This is the responsibility of humans as caliphs on earth to preserve the environment and to maintain the balance of the ecosystem. as well as compatibility with the surrounding environment. Abstract

The global environmental crisis, marked by climate change, deforestation, and ecosystem degradation, has brought widespread social impacts, including economic inequality, health crises, and food insecurity. In Indonesia, environmental pressures have intensified due to unsustainable agricultural practices, rapid urbanization, and extractive industries, necessitating new development models that prioritize environmental regeneration and social resilience. This study aims to explore how Islamic ecological principles are operationalized through permaculture practices at the Bumi Langit Institute and Kedai Teh Umran in Yogyakarta. This research employed a qualitative method with an interpretive approach. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis conducted at both research sites. The data were then analyzed using thematic analysis techniques based on Groat and Wang’s six-phase framework. The findings reveal that the principles of khilafah (stewardship), barakah (blessing), and mizan (balance) have been effectively embodied in agroforestry systems, waste-to-resource cycles, and community development initiatives grounded in Islamic ethics. The study implies that faith-based and community actors play a vital role in addressing contemporary ecological crises and highlights the need for stronger partnerships between religious institutions, academic bodies, and environmental practitioners to advance spiritually grounded innovations in the Anthropocene era.

Abstract

Sustainability issues are present as a result of construction development, one of which is a contributor to carbon emissions. This study aims to explore the types of waste and specifically analyze the processing methods of used building materials and plastic waste to determine their suitability as architectural elements. This study uses a deductive qualitative method, which is a field data analysis approach using the Hierarchical Recycling theory to conclude the findings. Observations were conducted on two primary subjects: the application of construction demolition waste at Bocor Alus Cafe and the plastic recycling process at Paste Lab. The results identify a clear distinction in processing: construction waste, such as doors and windows, is most effective through Component Reuse which requires minimal energy, while plastic waste requires specific Recycling stages such as shredding and melting to become functional architectural components. The study concludes that applying these concepts not only reduces waste but also aligns with Islamic principles of environmental preservation and sustainability.
