Abstract

The topic of this research is the depression experienced by the main character in the Jasmine Warga’s My Heart and Other Black Holes with the formulation problem on how the form of depression in the main character is and the efforts made by the main character to overcome the depression that she is going through. This research uses the descriptive analysis method with data analysis techniques in the form of a literature study using the perspective of literary psychology and a psychological review of depression and intrinsic elements such as character and characterization, plot, conflict, and settings. The results of this study are that the main character experiences a major depression with various physical, psychological, social symptoms, emotional and motivational symptoms, and some triggering factors that are psychological factors with several self-defense mechanisms and the main character's efforts in overcoming her depression.Keywords: Depression; Main Character; Self-defense Mechanism; Overcome Depression.

Abstract

This research is grounded in the importance of understanding language politeness in communication, particularly in fictional contexts such as films that reflect social values. This study aims to identify and analyze politeness strategies in the film The School for Good and Evil (2022), based on Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theory as presented in Cutting and Fordyce (2020), and linked to the characteristics of politeness according to Leech (2014). A qualitative descriptive method was employed, using the non-participant observation technique to collect the data. The findings reveal five types of politeness strategies: on record-baldly, on record-positive politeness, on record-negative politeness, off record, and overlaps. These strategies are influenced by social relationships, power dynamics, and communicative goals. The findings also indicate that politeness not always reflect sincerity, but can be used strategically to influence the interlocutor. Politeness in this film plays a significant role in shaping character dynamics and the storyline.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the type, word formation, function, lexical meaning and contextual meaning of the use British and Jamaican English slangs as identity markers in the film Blue Story (2019) by Andrew Onwubolu. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. This research focuses on British and Jamaican English slangs in the dialog of the central character and supporting characters in the film. This research finds out forty data of British and Jamaican English slangs in the movie, but in this discussion the data will be explain ten data of slangs. The type of imitative or word formation dominantly appears in the film. The function of slang language in the movie is mostly used as an identity marker that the speakers are group of Jamaican and British descent. In addition, slang is used as a form of self-expression in negative terms and mocking others because of the conflict between gangs.
