Abstract

The notion of translatability is possibly done with the extent to which meaning can still be adequately conveyed across languages. For this to be feasible, meaning has to be understood not only in terms of what the source text contains, but also in terms of target audience and purpose of translation. In linguistic untranslatability, the functionally relevant features include some which are in fact formal features of the language of the source language text. If the target language has no formally corresponding feature, the text, or the item, is (relatively) untranslatable. What appears to be a quite different problem arises, however, when a situational feature, functionally relevant for the source text, is completely absent in the culture of target language. As culture has something to do with the concept, source language texts and items are more or less translatable rather than absolutely translatableoruntranslatable. An adaptation, then, is a procedure whereby the translator replaces a term with cultural connotations, where those connotations are restricted to readers of the original language text, with a term with corresponding cultural connotations that would be familiar to readers of the translated text. Translating such culturally untranslatable items entails profound knowledge on both source and target cultures. Most cases in this particular work are solved by keepingcultural terms in the source language text, with or without explanation. Ecological, social, and religious culture terms undergo the process most frequently.

Abstract

Writing is one of the language skills that should be mastered by the students. According to pre research observation, they still got some difficulties when they were asked to write English text. Developing ideas is one of their difficulties in writing. Hence, an appropriate technique is required to help students overcome this problem. This study is conducted to find out the effect of using mind mapping technique on students‟ ability to write a recount text. Pre Experimental method and One Group pretest-posttest design are used in this study. First grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Cigombong are chosen as the sample. They are 32 students, all in one class. Purposive sampling technique is used to choose the sample. The data are collected through pre-test and post-test in the form of writing test. Then, t-test is used to analyze the data. The result of analysis shows that the value of t -test is 23.29 and the value of t-table at  0.05 level of significance is 2.04. This indicates that the value of t - calculated  is  higher  than  t-table,  hence  null  hypothesis  is  rejected  and  alternative  hypothesis  is accepted. Thus, it is concluded that there is an effect of using mind mapping technique on students‟ ability to write a recount text. Keywords: Writing ability, Recount text, Mind mapping technique.

Abstract

The digital lifestyle requires students to read any online discourse more critically. The paper presents the result of a study in which 42 EFL learners are asked to demonstrate their critical reading skills through answers to the questionnaire and test. Both instruments are adapted from Cottrell's (2011). The participants are intermediate EFL learners in Indonesia. They are 19-20 years of age, male and female. All of them enroll the Discourse Analysis course. The result reveals that most of them have a positive attitude and give a positive response to some key questions under the critical thinking skills. They show the ability to identify unfair techniques used in a text and are good at reading between and beyond the lines. They do further research when they are hesitant about something they read and know how to evaluate source material. With some refinements and piloting, future research might be done on other language skills.

Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out how the differences in sound inventory and syllable structures between Indonesian and Korean influence the phoneme realization of Korean learners studying Indonesian. It involves 14 Korean learners and data for this study was obtained through documentation. The syllabification analysis showed that there were several processes occurring in speech production, such as simplification of the syllable structure, the addition and deletion of sound, and the change of sound segments. The simplification of the syllable was shown in the pronunciation of the consonant cluster, which was pronounced as two separate syllables. The addition of sound was obvious in some words, which was observable at the final position of the first syllable. The deletion of sound was found in the word ending in /r/, in which the sound was dropped. The sound change was overtly seen in the pronunciation of consonants /v/ and /r/. These processes might result from the different sound inventory and syllable structures between Korean and Indonesian. Some of those issues need to be addressed significantly since phonological errors might seriously interfere with understanding.
