Abstract

This article examines the identity of the Banjar people who have been trapped in issues of ethnicity, religion and culture. The social construction of the identity of contemporary or urban Banjar people is still not touched by many researchers. Known as a religious and obedient society, the urban Banjar people cannot avoid contact with the clash of differences, where the presence of the internet makes it easy to clash or friction with various things. Living in the postmodern era, the Banjar community met with digital culture and consumerism. Both are very susceptible to coloring Islam, which is also happened in forming the identity of the Banjar people itself. Two important questions in this article, namely what do the Banjar people face in the postmodern era? And what is the effect on the construction of the identity of the Banjar people? In fact, the spirituality of the Banjar community which is touched by digital culture and consumerism is transformed by infecting the secular side and the melting of traditionalism in Banjar's public life. The culture of Ahlussunnah wal jamaah of the Banjar community is no longer rigid but mingles with several different ideologies or ideologies. The Islamic identity of the Banjar people is no longer dominated by the ideology of Aswaja. At the same time, political conditions play an active role, so there is silence on the worship side because it is intertwined with consumerism, digital culture and the strengthening of the flow of Islamic populism in society.

Abstract

The main focus of this article is the construction of the middle class Muslims through representation and images in the form of Islamic films. Representations and simulations are used to maintain and strengthen the position of the middle class in Muslim societies. In the era of liberal capitalism, spectacle media is the most popular medium of society. The image is the main value in the media, which disturbs the society of capitalism to smooth the agenda of capitalism and consumerism. The main question in this article is how the representation and simulation of Islam is from the middle class Muslims in Indonesian Islamic films in post-new Order era? This article reveals the position of Islamic films as a medium of preservation of the religious values of the middle class that are displayed through film framing such as economic ability, education qualifications and political choice. The identity of the middle class is a value that is not only illustrated without ideological battles and the struggle for space in films, but at the same time becomes a religious ideological medium, especially the closed middle class Muslims ideology.

Abstract

This paper is drawn from a larger study of Banjarese experiences in performing ḥajj or pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. This phenomenological study employed in-depth interviews with about 50 informants in two different areas where Banjarese populations are concentrated, i.e. South Kalimantan and Indragiri Hilir. The theme of the commodification of rituals including ojek ḥajar aswad and badal haji emerged from the comprehensive data analysis. In theory, commodification refers to the practice to turn something into a commodity. In the experiences of some Banjarese pilgrims, commodified rituals have the importance of both spiritual enhancement and social pride, even though these practices sometimes involve cheating and manipulation from the side of the service providers. So, not only do ḥajj rituals provide sacred experiences for the pilgrims, but also an opportunity for some to make profits from them even through unethical or illegal conduct.
