Abstract

Mr. Prabowo Subianto is often regarded as a controversial figure, both in his military and political career. This research aims to find out Mr. Prabowo Subianto’s representation in one of The New York Times articles entitled “Indonesian General Accused of Kidnapping Is Named Defense Minister”, which was written by Richard C. Paddock in 2019. The article mainly discusses the controversial issue regarding Mr. Joko Widodo’s, the re-elected President of Indonesia, decision to appoint Mr. Subianto, his rival in the presidential election, to be one of his cabinet ministers. In analyzing the topic, van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis, is utilized. Despite the fact that in van Dijk’s CDA there are three levels of analysis, namely the macro, meso, and micro levels, this paper is limited to the micro level only, as this focuses more on unveiling a more specific and detailed portrayal of Mr. Subianto’s representation in the newspaper article. In the microstructure analysis, three linguistics tools are employed, namely actor description, level of description, and rhetoric. The research applies the descriptive qualitative method as well as the library research method. The findings consistently show the negative representation of Mr. Subianto in the macrostructure, microstructure and superstructure analyses.

Abstract

In the context of rising political polarization in the United States, President Joe Biden's 2022 speech, delivered ahead of the midterm elections, sought to address the growing ideological divide and the perceived threat posed by the MAGA (Make America Great Again) forces. This research critically examines President Joe Biden’s 2022 speech, delivered in the context of the U.S. midterm elections, focusing on the portrayal of the MAGA (Make America Great Again) forces as a threat to U.S. democracy and the Constitution. Using Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework and Stuart Hall’s representation theory, the study analyzes the speech through macrostructure, microstructure, and superstructure to uncover how Biden constructs the MAGA forces as a negative representation in contrast to the Democratic Party’s commitment to equality and democracy. The research employs a qualitative method, examining linguistic tools such as examples, repetition, contrast, and comparison to understand how Biden uses language to highlight the disruptive and violent actions of the MAGA forces. Through examples like the January 6th Capitol riot and election denialism, Biden portrays the MAGA forces as violent, authoritarian, and opposed to democratic processes. Repetition of key phrases, like “no right,” emphasizes the regressive nature of the MAGA agenda, while contrast and comparison serve to define the Democratic Party’s vision of unity and democracy against the MAGA forces’ divisive actions. The superstructure of the speech, organized into distinct arguments and sub-arguments, further reinforces the portrayal of the MAGA forces as a serious threat to the nation’s values, calling for collective action to preserve democracy. The findings suggest that Biden’s strategic use of discourse positions the MAGA forces as an adversarial force, aiming to strip away fundamental rights and disrupt the democratic order. This research contributes to the broader field of Critical Discourse Analysis by exploring the role of political rhetoric in shaping public perceptions of political movements. It underscores the importance of critically engaging with political speeches to reveal implicit messages and power dynamics within discourse. The study’s implications point to the need for ongoing discourse analysis to better understand the complex interplay between language and political ideology, particularly in the context of contemporary political polarization. Future research could extend this analysis by examining additional speeches or exploring the broader impact of discourse on public opinion and political behaviour.

Abstract

A writer’s distinctive narrative style, often referred to as their primary norm, shapes their consistent use of language. However, deliberate deviations from this norm can serve significant literary purposes. These deliberate deviations are termed as their secondary norm. This change of language style is believed to hold a specific intention on the part of the writer. This research aims to investigate Joseph Conrad’s instances of internal deviation in his novel The Secret Agent, and how these deviations contribute to the literary effects of the novel. Conrad’s primary norm is characterized by a sentence-complexity style, while his secondary norm involves a shift towards a sentence-simplicity style. To clarify these norms, the study employs the clause complexes theory within the framework of Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics. Employing a descriptive qualitative research approach along with a library research method, this study collects and analyses data to uncover the instances of deviation and explore their literary implications. By examining Conrad’s intentional internal deviations, this research seeks to describe the underlying motives and the impact of these deviations on the overall reading experience of The Secret Agent. Through this investigation, it is found out that Conrad’s use of sentence simplicity style contributes to the novel’s literary effects, namely building the foreshadowing and suspense, developing the character, and setting the atmosphere of the novel.
