Abstract

Crocodylus porosus and C. novaeguineae are two protected and tradable crocodile species in Indonesia. Therefore, precautionary principles are needed in their utilization to ensure sustainability. Although the commodity from these species is traded domestically and internationally, the broader picture of its use in Indonesia is less known. The objectives of the study were to: (1) analyze the domestic trade of crocodiles, and (2) analyze the international trade of crocodiles. The analysis was conducted using data of direct utilization sourced from the wild in the form of skin and hatchlings, data on domestic transport permits, CITES export permits, and the CITES trade database. The study suggested that the harvest of crocodile hatchlings and skin do not represent the actual condition since the skin recorded were only those sent outside of the province. Determining zero harvest quotas of C. porosus did not stop species harvest for domestic trade. The dominant source of C. porosus skin export was captive breeding, while C. novaeguineaewas sourced from the wild. Ranch-sourced skin of both species for export were very low.

Abstract

The Flores Timur FMU establishment was part of the broader efforts to enhance forest governance, improve management practices, and resolve land tenure conflicts effectively within forest areas. However, the challenges commonly encountered included conflicts with communities and other sectors regarding land tenure, area planning, and policy implementation. This research aimed to identify strategic variables of internal and external factors to determine a development strategy for Flores Timur FMU-Protected using SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis. The results showed that the primary strategy for managing Flores Timur FMU included law enforcement for forest protection, acceleration of rehabilitation efforts for forests and lands classified as critical, and calculation of forest economic values based on the benefits of environmental services. Moreover, increasing community participation in forest utilization through social forestry programs and employing a participatory approach to forest area boundaries would contribute to effective management.

Abstract

Private forests cultivated using agroforestry systems have the potential to produce timber, non-timber forest products, and a variety of agricultural crops. However, such forests are still being managed in a traditional manner, both in terms of cultivation techniques and management. The Service activities of the Dosen Pulang Kampung Program specifically aimed to introduce an innovative tree felling technique called the sandat technique, which minimizes the risk of damage to understory vegetation. The method used in this program is service learning, which integrates academic learning with community service through training sessions (both theoretical and practical). The results show that community forest farmers and loggers have understood this technique, recognizing it as a newly introduced method that they find highly beneficial and are eager to adopt in their forest-management practices. Consequently, they expressed their intention to adopt it for managing community forests. This innovation has started to demonstrate increased knowledge, a shift in attitudes (towards adoption), and satisfaction with the program itself. The Sandat Technique is thus critical to becoming a policy in community forest management and should be disseminated by the forestry office/branch to community forest farmers for adoption in the future.
