Abstract

Protected Forest Management Unit (PFMU) of Solok is one of 120 FMU Model that has been set by the government through Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF). Community settlements (Nagari) were around and inside the FMU. Additionally, the existence of the FMU as a new institution in forest management cause different interpretation of the various stakeholders. The objective of this research was to identifying stakeholders and their interest and analyzing the patterns of relationship of stakeholders involved in the management of PFMU Solok. This research was conducted based on stakeholder analysis and social network analysis. Stakeholders involved in management of PFMU Solok have diverse interests and power. There were 22 stakeholders identified, in which 2 were classified as key players, 10 as subject, 4 as context setter, and 6 as crowd. Interaction pattern of stakeholders in the form of information flow was not spread evenly. The result shows that there were many stakeholder in the management of PFMU Solok. Multistakeholder forest management can be an alternative management model to integrate interests of stakeholders and equally distribute information.

Abstract

Coastal communities in the Banyuasin District heavily rely on mangrove ecosystem services. However, unsustainable livelihood practices are driving mangroves into degradation. Our study aims to identify alternative livelihoods that can transform more sustainable mangrove businesses and practices. This will be achieved by co-developing a business model through participatory action research (PAR) in mangrove villages of Banyuasin. Our study revealed potential community-driven edu-ecotourism businesses in Sungsang and Marga Sungsang Village for further development. This business heavily relies on the natural authenticity of its mangrove, which amplifies the urgency to restore the degraded mangrove in the landscape. Thus, there is a high alignment of the business model canvas components with restoration activities such as the development of a mangrove seedling nursery, selling, and planting. This community-driven business is financially viable, according to the financial metrics, with a net present value (NPV) of IDR 180,148,622, a benefit-cost ratio (BCR) of 1.3, an internal rate of return (IRR) of 52.88%, and a payback period (PBP) of 1.7 years. The development of this business model can leverage sustainable livelihood opportunities and reconcile multiple interests while amplifying the urgency of restoring mangroves. The collaborative efforts among the community during this process serve as an exercise to build collective knowledge, strengthen social ties, and enhance trust and communication. This, in turn, leads to stronger collective action and social capital, which can sustain mangrove restoration beyond the project duration.

Abstract

Private forest farmers in Karyasari Village typically sell standing trees using a "borongan" system without knowing the actual stand volume, while buyers rely on visual estimation methods. This situation is attributed to the lack of a standardized reference for estimating timber volume in private forests. This community service program aimed to transform the farmers' paradigm regarding timber selling systems towards measurable volume-based estimation through technical training on forest inventory. The program involved 30 members of the Kelompok Wanita Tani Sipon Harum Lestari and Kelompok Tani Harapan Maju in Karyasari Village, Bogor Regency. The training employed an andragogical approach, encompassing material dissemination, demonstrations of simple measurement tools, field practice, and training evaluation. The effectiveness of the training was assessed using a one-group pre-test and post-test design. Paired t-test analysis revealed a significant increase in knowledge regarding tree dimension measurement (p=0.0001) and volume estimation (p=0.0037). These findings indicate that the training on forest inventory techniques successfully enhanced the farmers' capacity to measure tree dimensions and estimate timber volume. This knowledge is highly valuable as a benchmark for establishing an independent and sustainable private forest timber selling system.

Abstract

Private forests cultivated using agroforestry systems have the potential to produce timber, non-timber forest products, and a variety of agricultural crops. However, such forests are still being managed in a traditional manner, both in terms of cultivation techniques and management. The Service activities of the Dosen Pulang Kampung Program specifically aimed to introduce an innovative tree felling technique called the sandat technique, which minimizes the risk of damage to understory vegetation. The method used in this program is service learning, which integrates academic learning with community service through training sessions (both theoretical and practical). The results show that community forest farmers and loggers have understood this technique, recognizing it as a newly introduced method that they find highly beneficial and are eager to adopt in their forest-management practices. Consequently, they expressed their intention to adopt it for managing community forests. This innovation has started to demonstrate increased knowledge, a shift in attitudes (towards adoption), and satisfaction with the program itself. The Sandat Technique is thus critical to becoming a policy in community forest management and should be disseminated by the forestry office/branch to community forest farmers for adoption in the future.
