Abstract

The design of this research is quantitative-qualitative descriptive research. The purpose of this research are first to analyze the English learning needs of students in Tourism Study Program and second to analyze the suitability of existing English textbook used. The subjects of this research are students of SMKN 7 Bengkulu 12th grade, English teachers in SMKN 7 Bengkulu, graduates of Tourism Study Program, and the English language users in the field of Tourism. In this study, researcher used the needs analysis to find what are the need, lacks, and want of students in learning English. The instruments that used in this study are questionnaires, interview, and existing English textbooks used in English language learning. The result of the research indicate that the needs of the Tourism Study Program student grade XII of SMKN 7 Kota Bengkulu are materials and activities that support their activities to work in the tourism field and the existing English textbook used by Tourism Study Program student grade XII of SMKN 7 Kota Bengkulu that is English textbook from Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Indonesia (2015) do not cover the students’ need.

Abstract

The design of this research is qualitative descriptive research. The purposes of this research are first to analyze the English learning needs of students in Culinary Department and second to identify what are the needs that not available in the textbook used. The subjects of this research are first the students of SMKN 3 Bengkulu 10th grade, second the English   teachers   who   teach   at   the   Culinary   department,   third   alumni   of   Culinary department, and fourth the English language users in the field of Culinary. In this study, researchers used the needs analysis to find what are the needs and wants of students in learning English. The instruments that used in this study are questionnaires, interview questionnaires, and textbooks used in English language learning. The result of the research indicates that the students' English needs is the learning material according to their vocation and the activity that can make the students more active in the learning process. For unavailable needs are including the materials that contain more vocabulary related to culinary, text examples and tasks to suit students' abilities, and learning activities that can make students more active.

Abstract

This classroom action research was carried for implementing cue cards as the teaching media to improve students’ descriptive speaking in class VIII 2 of SMPN 3 Bengkulu City. This research was focused on:  (1) the improvement of students’ descriptive speaking competence by using cue cards and (2) the investigation of factors involved in the improvement of students’ descriptive speaking competence by using cue cards. This research was implemented to 36 students (19 female and 17 male) registered in this class. The progress was measured by speaking test and some supporting data such as observation checklist, field note, and interview. The result of the research indicated the progress of students’ descriptive speaking by using cue cards. Students in this class were not good in speaking performances could be affected by the lack of other English skills. In action phase of the two cycles, students made a lot of mistakes in grammar and were lack of vocabulary mastery. The factors influenced in improving students’ descriptive speaking competence were students’ English proficiency: integrated skills and language element (pronunciation, grammatical comprehension, vocabulary mastery, and fluency), thinking ability, attitude along the treatment. The research concluded that the improvement did not achieve the level of satisfaction as expected. Secondly the factors influenced were integrated skills, language element, thinking ability and attitude.

Abstract

This study was a classroom action research. It was aimed to explain whether Project Based Learning can improve students’ ability in writing descriptive text and step of Project Based Learning which improved the students’ ability to write descriptive text at grade X of SMAN 1 Bengkulu Selatan in the 2015/2016 academic year. The subjects of this study were 35 students, consisted of 10 females and 25 males. The instruments of this study were writing tests, students’ observation checklists, teacher’s observation checklist, and  interview.  The  study  was  conducted in  two  cycles  which  included  plan, action, observation, and reflection. The evaluation test was administered at the end of each cycle. Based on the result of the study, the improvement of students’ mean score in cycle1 and cycle 2 was significant. It was proven that the students’ mean score in cycle 1 that70.45 increased into 80.31 in cycle 2. To conclude, Project Based Learning was effective to improve students’ ability to write descriptive text and also step 4 of Project BasedLearning approach; monitor the students and the progress of the project became the best step which improved the students’ ability to write descriptive text at grade X SMAN IBengkulu Selatan. To suggest, English teachers can apply Project Based Learning approach as one of the alternative ways to improve students’ writing ability and to improve students’ academic achievement.
