Abstract

This research tries to analyze and discuss about the forms and functions of the operator in English found in the novel entitled Twilight written by Stephanie Meyer as the data source. The method used in conducting this research includes; chose the data source, data collection and data analysis. All the data from the novels are collected through library research by selecting the sentences which are related to the topic and analyzed systematically based on its types and functions. The theories applied to support this paper are the theory of Quirk, et al in their book entitled A Grammar of Contemporary English (1972) as the main theory, the theory of Cobuild in his book entitled English Grammar (1990) and others that are relevant to the topic are used as supporting theories. Based on the result of the analysis, it is found that the operators have four major forms namely do, be, have, and central modals. Besides, the functions of the operators are helping the positive declarative sentence in forming negative, interrogative, and nonassertive. In forming negative, the operator is immediately added with the negator not or the enclitic contracted form n’t and it is placed between the subject and the predication. Then, there are two forms of interrogatives or questions, namely yes-no questions and wh-questions. In yes-no questions, operatoris placed in front of the subject generally and in the wh-questions, the operator follows the wh-words. Besides, the operators also have important function in forming the nonassertive because the nonassertive form usually appears in the negative and interrogative sentences.

Abstract

Word formation is a dynamic process that contributes significantly to vocabulary expansion. This study explores the various factors that hinder the formation of words in the English language. The research investigates linguistic elements that act as barriers to the organic growth of the lexicon. Linguistic factors encompass syntactic constraints, morphological irregularities, and phonological intricacies, which pose challenges to the seamless creation of new words. Additionally, the study delves into semantic ambiguities that impede the clear delineation of meanings, hindering the formation of concise and universally accepted terms. The method applied in this research is descriptive qualitative with the data taken from various resources. The theory applied for this research is the theory of Aronoff. Based on the result of analysis, it is found that blocking refers to the non-acceptance of a new word form not due to the violation of word formation rules but rather because of the existence of another simpler form that precedes it or has already been used for a different meaning. There are two types of blocking in English, namely type-blocking and token-blocking. Type-blocking involves the competition of regular morphological processes, while token-blocking is the potential blocking of regular forms by synonymous words that already exist. There are three conditions for token-blocking: synonymy, productivity, and frequency. Factors causing blocking in the formation of new words can be classified into four categories: phonological, morphological, semantic, and aesthetic.

Abstract

Deixis is part of pragmatics, which functions as a pointer. The pointer in question is any form of language used to refer to people, places, times, or specific situations. This study is highly dependent on the context and situation in a statement, so its use cannot be separated from the social and cultural background of the speaker. Cultural background is a major factor influencing the form and use of deictics. In line with this, Indonesia is known as a multicultural country with 718 regional languages, which certainly influences the forms of deictics. One form of the actualisation of regional language use can be seen in the arts, particularly in traditional literary works such as satua bali. In Balinese satua, sor singgih basa is generally used, which is a language variety that reflects differences in politeness levels. The existence of sor singgih basa influences the form of deictic expressions used, as their use is adapted to the social status and relationship between the speaker and the addressee in the story. This study uses a qualitative method with a Balinese satua entitled Pan Balang Tamak as data source. Data was collected through observation techniques and analysed using a qualitative approach. The analysed data consists of narrative excerpts and the utterances of the characters in the story. The results of the study indicate that two forms of deictic expressions were found: relational social deictic expressions and absolute social deictic expressions.
