Abstract

Hypertension is one disease that many elderly people suffer from. Hypertension is a disease that can cause complications. Uncontrolled hypertension can lead to heart attacks, cardiac hypertrophy, and even heart failure. Lifestyles are the one factor that can impact high blood pressure. Lifestyles such as poor sleep quality, a lack of physical activity, and unhealthy eating patterns can elevate the risk of hypertension. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the relationship between sleep quality and blood pressure in older adults. The method used is observational analysis with cross-sectional and population sampling methods. This research uses a Fisher's test with a result of 0.005 (p<0.05). There is an association between sleep quality and blood pressure in the elderly with hypertension at the Sinta Rangkang Nursing Home in Palangka Raya.

Abstract

Hanjuang Merah (Cordyline fruticosa) is one of the plants used by the Dayak people as traditional medicine. Red hanjuang is an ornamental plant that is very abundant in Indonesia, but there is still not much research that proves the efficacy of red hanjuang. The aim of this research was to determine the phytochemical screening and antibacterial activity of leaf extract of hanjuang merah (Cordyline fruticose) against the bacteria Staphylococcus epidermidis. The method used in sample extraction was maceration, while in the antibacterial test used the paper strip diffusion method with concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. The yield of ethanol extract of hanjuang merah leaf was 11.35%. There was an increase in the diameter of the inhibition zone with the addition of the concentration of ethanol extract of hanjuang merah leaf. The addition of ethanol extract of hanjuang merah leaf at a concentration of 75% sensitive inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. Secondary metabolites such as tannins, alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids and quinones found in ethanol extract of hanjuang merah leaves are considered responsible for inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Hypertension is known as a "silent killer" due to its often symptomless progression, which can lead to fatal consequences. Many people with hypertension remain unaware of the condition, as it frequently presents no noticeable signs or symptoms. Among the significant risk factors contributing to hypertension, heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure are obesity and high cholesterol levels. Objective: This study aims to examine the relationship between cholesterol levels, BMI, and blood pressure in elderly individuals. Methods: This study utilized a cross-sectional design with a sample of 34 elderly participants. Total cholesterol was measured from capillary blood samples, BMI was calculated based on height and weight, and blood pressure was assessed using a sphygmomanometer. Results: Findings indicate a significant relationship between cholesterol levels and systolic blood pressure (p < 0.0001) as well as diastolic blood pressure (p < 0.002). Similarly, BMI showed a significant association with both systolic (p < 0.0001) and diastolic blood pressure (p < 0.008). Conclusion: The study concludes that there is a significant association between cholesterol levels, BMI, and blood pressure in elderly individuals. Cholesterol levels strongly correlate with both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, while BMI also significantly correlates with systolic and diastolic pressure. Consequently, cholesterol and BMI can be considered critical risk factors influencing blood pressure in the elderly. Effective management of cholesterol levels and body weight is therefore essential in preventing and controlling hypertension in older populations.
