Abstract

This article aims to discuss the role of discourse analysis in literary analysis. For this aim, the writers apply Sperber and Wilson's theory of relevance. This theory says that the meaning of utterance might be analyzed in terms of explicature, higher-level explicature, and implicature. The drama analyzed is Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. The writers suggest that discourse analysis can function to analyze the language used in the context of drama and that this analysis should be applied in studying literary works.

Abstract

This study examines the implied meaning of love in Robert Burns’ A Red, Red Rose through a structural approach, integrating Cognitive Poetics, Conceptual Metaphor Theory, and structuralist perspectives. Using qualitative analysis, each stanza is explored to identify figurative devices such as similes, hyperboles, symbolism, repetition, rhyme, and meter, and to interpret how these elements convey nuanced emotional meanings. The findings reveal that stanza 1 presents love as fresh and harmonious; stanza 2 emphasizes its enduring nature across time; stanza 3 expresses a cosmic and temporal climax; and stanza 4 depicts a dignified farewell, highlighting constancy, hope, and devotion. Overall, Burns’ integration of figurative language and structural patterns demonstrates love as eternal, resilient, and harmoniously balanced. Suggestions for future research include applying cognitive and cross-cultural approaches to poetry, while educators and students are encouraged to analyze the interplay of form and figurative devices to deepen understanding of implied meaning.

Abstract

Language shapes social meanings and contributes to the construction of gendered power relations. This study examines how Melanie Martinez’s “Strawberry Shortcake” constructs, negotiates, and challenges patriarchal ideology through a Critical Discourse Analysis framework. Addressing a gap in existing research, which rarely explores how a single pop song intertwines critiques of body shaming and the blaming of female victims, the study analyzes the lyrics using Fairclough’s three-dimensional model. The analysis demonstrates how the culinary metaphors of “icing on top” and “strawberry shortcake” function simultaneously as markers of objectification and as ironic vehicles for feminist resistance. Patterned repetition such as “It’s my fault” is shown to strategically deconstruct the logic of victim-blaming, while interdiscursive references to purity norms reveal the contradictory expectations imposed on girls and women. Beyond identifying these linguistic patterns, the findings illustrate how the song repositions the female voice from an objectified figure toward an assertive agent who critiques socialized entitlement and misplaced responsibility. This study contributes to CDA scholarship by showing how popular music can serve as a site of ideological transformation and offers an analytical model that supports critical media literacy, particularly in recognizing subtle gendered messages in contemporary cultural texts.
