Abstract

Coffee has become a promising leading commodity in the North Sumatra region. However, in the practice of coffee cultivation at the location, issues were found where most farming practices did not comply with Good Agriculture Practice (GAP). One way to support the achievement of SDG Goal 8: decent work and economic growth can be through community service. The Edu Farmers International Foundation, through its "Farming for the Nation" program, conducted mentoring activities for coffee farmers in the form of field schools. The aim of this activity was to assist coffee farmers in Hutagurgur Village in adhering to proper GAP practices to achieve the maximum quality and quantity of coffee. The method involved observing problems and potentials, formulating solutions, planning field schools, determining topics and schedules for the field schools, and conducting the field schools. The results showed that farmers experienced an increase in knowledge and implementation by 25-400%. However, the impact on productivity has not yet been observed, as the assessment was not conducted during the main harvest season.

Abstract

Rice farming plays an important role in supporting food security and the farmers' economy. However, the amount of transaction costs that arise during farming and marketing activities is an obstacle that can reduce farmers' income. This study aims to identify the form and type of transaction costs and analyze the effect of marketing channels on farmers' income through transaction costs as an intervening variable. This study uses a quantitative approach with sampling techniques using probability sampling using proportional random sampling and obtained 61 rice farmers in Wilayut Village, Sukodono District, Sidoarjo Regency as respondents. The results showed that marketing channels had a positive and significant effect on transaction costs, while transaction costs had a negative and significant effect on farmers' income. Transaction costs incurred by farmers include input procurement, labor sourcing, farmer group meetings, and selling costs such as transportation, information, and negotiation. The average total transaction costs incurred reached IDR 296,676/ha/season. These results indicate that selecting efficient marketing channels can reduce the burden of transaction costs and contribute to increasing farm income.

Data collection in this research used secondary data obtained from the Central Statistics Agency. The analytical method used in this research uses the Location Quotient (LQ), Dynamic Location Quotient (DLQ), and Shift Share methods. From the LQ calculation, the agricultural sector is the base sector with an LQ value of 2.48. From the DLQ analysis, the agricultural sector experienced a change in performance to become a non-base sector or cannot be expected to become a basis in the future with a DLQ value of 0.261. The factor that causes changes in the performance of the non-agricultural sector is the economic structure factor with an SSS value greater than the LSS value.
