Abstract

This book is largely based on the writer's PhD thesis completed at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. This book represents an in-depth study of Laskar Jihad. Laskar Jihad has become somewhat prominent in recent times namely because of its role in the bloody conflict in Ambon. This religious conflict between Christians and Muslims resulted in countless casualties on both sides. The author takes the view that the phenomenon of Laskar Jihad represents a kind of synthesis between Islamic doctrine, militancy and efforts to strengthen the identity of a group that felt sidelined by modernization. Laskar Jihad's involvement in the conflict in Ambon was supported by - amongst others - fatwas from Salafi scholars in the Middle East (Mecca, Medina and Yemen).DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v14i2.552

Abstract

This study is about the role of Salafi pesantrens (Islamic boarding schools) in Salafi da'wa (conveying or inviting to the way of Islam) in Indonesia. A Salafi pesantren is a pesantren that teaches Salafism which mostly derives from the works of Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab, the founder of Wahhabism in Saudi Arabia. Salafi pesantrens started to emerge in the late 1980s and were established by graduates from Saudi Arabia and Yemen universities, and supported by alumni of the Institute for the Study of Islam and Arabic (LIPIA) in Jakarta. While the precise number of Salafi pesantrens is unavailable, it is estimated that the number reaches 50 pesantrens. Salafi pesantrens not only teach their students about Salafism, but also accustom them to practice the Salafi manhaj (path) in their daily life. The study focuses on three pesantrens: al-Nur al-Atsari in Ciamis, Assunah in Cirebon (both in West Java), and al-Furqan in Gresik, East Java. I analyse various aspects of these educational institutions: their historical development, community responses, educational programs, curriculum, methods of instruction, students' lives and activities, networks and fundraising.

Abstract

This article delves into a discussion about how the Indonesian government, specifically the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag RI), regulated the handling of problematic religious movements and groups in Indonesia in 2017. It also aims to investigate whether the 2013 fatwa issued by the Indonesia Council of Ulama (MUI), which consists of religious scholars and holds significant influence, played a pivotal role in shaping this regulatory framework. Both of these documents were issued in response to the actions of individuals and groups that were perceived to have crossed the line of acceptability or violated the core beliefs of mainstream religious groups in Indonesia. They both outline key principles aimed at preventing any activities, teachings, or movements that strayed beyond the boundaries of legitimate dissent and encroached upon the sacred aspects of religion. In essence, the primary theme running through both documents is the preservation of mainstream religious orthodoxy. This reflects the government's and the dominant religious group's efforts to control and closely monitor any groups that appear to deviate from mainstream beliefs. The government and the majority religious community are viewed as the protectors of orthodoxy, and they are unhesitant in restricting individuals or groups accused of being "problematic" or "deviant" from participating in the public sphere.

Abstract

At a time when the popular imagination outside the Muslim world has been captured by images of Muslim "fundamentalists" terrorising the "West" and when predominantly Muslim countries themselves are under a variety of political pressures to express solidarity with narrowly legalistic lslam, it is timely to reappraise the actual variety of Islamic religiosity active in the lives of ordinary Muslims. Considerable effort is now being made by scholars, governments and private risk assessment agencies, to identify the social spaces occupied by intolerant, exclusivist expressions of Islam deriving from narrowly legalistic understandings of Islam. However, less energy is being directed towards identifying the contemporary modalities of liberal, non-exclusiuist modes of lslamic religiosity.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v10i3.628

Martin van Bruinessen, ed, Contemporary Development in Indonesian Islam, Explaining the “Conservative Turn”, Singapore: Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, 2013, pp. 240 + xxxiv.Contemporary Developments in Indonesian Islam: Explaining the ‘Conservative Turn’ consists of four articles analyzing conservative currents among Muslims in Indonesia. The  book’s first two articles deal with established Muslim organizations, namely the Council of Indonesian ‘Ulama (MUI) and Muhammadiyah, while the other two discuss radical Islamic movements in the regions of South Celebes and Solo, Central Java. Written by van Bruinessen, the book examines why the conservative trend has reemerged in Indonesian Islam. The author provides readers with two theories. Firstly, he argues that a decline in the influence of liberal thought has accompanied the democratization process. Secondly, he identifies an increase of Middle Eastern influence to Indonesia through alumni. This work shows that conservatism is not only apparent in radical Islamic movements that have emerged during the Reformation era but also present in well-established organizations such as MUI and Muhammadiyah. The significance of this work to the study of Indonesian Islam lies in its explanation of how conservatism enters those organizations.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v21i2.1043

Abstract

Hassan Hanafi, setelah mempelajari kegagalan berbagai gerakan Islam sebelumnya, mengusulkan konsep "Kiri Islam" sebagai metode alternatif untuk pembaruan pemikiran Islam. "Kiri Islam" bertujuan untuk merekonstruksi dan memperbarui tradisi (al-Turath wa al-tajdid) melalui tiga dimensi utama: sikap terhadap khazanah klasik Islam, sikap terhadap khazanah Barat, dan sikap terhadap realitas kontemporer. Dimensi pertama mendorong revitalisasi warisan Islam klasik, dimensi kedua menghasilkan oksidentalisme sebagai kajian kritis terhadap tradisi Barat, dan dimensi ketiga mengembangkan teori penafsiran atau hermeneutika.

Artikel ini membedah buku Muhammad ‘Abid al-Jabiri, “Agama, Negara dan Penerapan Syariah”. Dalam hal ini, penulis menempatkan buku dalam perdebatan wacana penerapan syariat Islam. Sementara sebagian kalangan memandang ada hubungan antara negara dan agama, dalam bukunya, al-Jabiri beranggapan tidak ada, karena analisis sejarah tidak menguatkan pendapat mereka.
