Abstract

Abstract This research is about inter-cultural non-verbal communication strategies in Indonesian and Thailand students’ interaction which is included in the Kinesics of Novinger’s theory. The objectives of research are finding out the description of the kinds of non-verbal communication strategies used among students and the ways of non-verbal communication to the students. This research applies descriptive quantitative method. The research instruments are documentation and questionnaire. The data analysis showed that there were 39 kinds of non-verbal communication. There were 16 kinds of Gestures, 6 kinds of Eye Contact, 7 kinds of Facial Expressions, 6 kinds of Touch, and 4 kinds of Posture. The result of descriptive analysis showed the rate percentage of non-verbal communication strategies that have big roles in communication between Indonesian and Thailand students were 90% gesture and 10% eye contact. Finally, non-verbal communication mostly functions as substituting verbal messages, elaborating verbal messages, transmitting telling, etc.Abstract This research is about inter-cultural non-verbal communication strategies in Indonesian and Thailand students’ interaction which is included in the Kinesics of Novinger’s theory. Abstract

Culture shock will happen when persons visit new place or country that they have never been before. They will get anxious because they do not speak the language, know the custom or understand people in their daily life. It couldhappened everywhere to everyone. Makassar as one of region in Indonesia is not known as tourist destination and it could lead the more potential to get in culture shock. Thus, this research studied about culture shock experienced by English native speakers in Makassar by using the theory of culture shock. Having done the interview and using the qualitative method in analyzing the data, this research finds that the culture shock experienced by English native speaker in Makassar is described in three phases of culture shock: anticipation, culture shock and adjustment. Moreover, the native English speaker finds more than self-healing in adjustment phase.

Abstract

Tulisan ini merupakan hasil penelitian tentang sikap anak-anak di Taman Kanak-kanak (TK) terhadap pemanfaatan nyanyian, permainan, dan kisah-kisah yang berbahasa Inggris dalam mengenalkan bahasa Inggris di TK Aisyiyah Makassar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa anak-anak telah menunjukkan antusiasme tinggi dari pembelajaran kosakata bahasa Inggris dan bangga untuk dapat bernyanyi dan menghitung jumlah dalam bahasa Inggris. Faktor yang mendukung pengenalan bahasa Inggris dalam kegiatan mereka adalah lingkungan sekolah, kompetensi guru, metode mengajar, dan bahan untuk proses belajar mengajar. Studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa bahasa Inggris dapat diperkenalkan di TK tanpa adanya tambahan jam khusus untuk pelajaran bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Tulisan ini mengungkap perilaku peserta didik terhadap pelajaran Bahasa Inggris, faktor faktor yang mempengaruhinya serta apakah terdapat perbedaan motivasi antara peserta didik laki-laki dan perempuan. Dengan menggunakan metodologi kuantitatif dan kualititatif  hasil telaah  menyimpulkan adanya perilaku positif di mana motivasi instrumental lebih dominan dibanding motivasi integratif. Peran pengajar, teman sekelas, dan variasi bahan ajar adalah faktor penunjang motivasi sedangkan faktor penghambat motivasi diidentifikasi adalah kurangnya diskusi di dalam kelas, ketidaknyamanan antara sesama peserta didik, kurangnya penguasaan dalam tata bahasa, pengucapan dan kosa kata serta kurangnya fasilitas pengajaran. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa motivasi peserta didik wanita lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan laki laki.

Tulisan ini menggambarkan tentang frase verba bahasa Mandar Majene. Unsur-unsur pemadu frase verba bahasa Mandar Majene adalah verba , ajektiva, modalitas, aspek, dan ingkar. Di antara unsur-unsur pemadu frase verba ini ada yang bersifat wajib (Obligatory) dan adapula yang bersifat manasuka (Optional). Unsur yang bersifat wajib adalah verba, sedangkan yang bersifat manasuka adalah ajektiva, modalitas, aspek dan ingkar. Adapun bentuk-bentuk Frase verba yang terdiri atas verba saja, Frase verba yang terdiri atas modalitas dan verba, Frase verba yang terdiri atas aspek dan verba, Frase verba yang terdiri atas dua verba, Frase verba yang terdiri atas adjektiva dan verba, Frase verba yang terdiri atas ingkar dan verba dan Frase verba yang terdiri atas ingkar, aspek, modalitas, an verba.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research investigates the learning strategies used by English as a foreign language (EFL) students and gender differences in the strategy inventory for language learning (SILL) in Indonesia. To gather the data, this study employed quantitative descriptive methods with a Google form-based questionnaire involving 110 college students, and the data were analysed using SPSS 25. The fifty items of the questionnaire were divided into six strategies: memory strategy, cognitive strategy, metacognitive strategy, compensation strategy, emotion strategy, and social strategy. Findings of the study indicate that the students use all the strategies in learning English, and all these strategies are in a high level of use except for memory strategy which is in a moderate level. Gender differences data show that most male students preferred the social strategy (36%), whereas most female students preferred metacognitive strategy (56.47%) suggesting that male and female students have different learning styles. The results of this research shed light on the importance of raising teachers’ awareness of their students’ diversity in learning strategies. Thus, teachers should improve their repertoire of teaching techniques and strategies to meet students’ different learning styles in the classroom. ABSTRAKPenelitian ini menyelidiki strategi pembelajaran yang digunakan oleh siswa bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing (EFL) dan perbedaan gender dalam inventarisasi strategi untuk pembelajaran bahasa (SILL) di Indonesia. Untuk mengumpulkan data, penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan kuesioner berbasis Google form yang melibatkan 110 mahasiswa, dan data dianalisis menggunakan SPSS 25. Lima puluh item kuesioner dibagi menjadi enam strategi: strategi memori, strategi kognitif, strategi metakognitif. strategi, strategi kompensasi, strategi emosi, dan strategi sosial. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa menggunakan semua strategi dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, dan semua jenis strategi berada di tingkat tinggi kecuali strategi memori yang berada di tingkat sedang. Data perbedaan gender menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa laki-laki lebih menyukai strategi sosial (36%), sedangkan sebagian besar siswa perempuan lebih menyukai strategi metakognitif (56,47%) menunjukkan bahwa siswa laki-laki dan perempuan memiliki gaya belajar yang berbeda secara signifikan. Hasil penelitian ini menyoroti pentingnya meningkatkan kesadaran guru tentang keragaman siswa mereka dalam strategi pembelajaran. Dengan demikian, guru harus meningkatkan repertoar teknik dan strategi pengajaran mereka untuk memenuhi gaya belajar siswa yang berbeda di kelas.

Abstract

Cultural differences make Indonesian students have the opportunity experienced culture shock. This study aims to find the dimension and the factors that affect of culture shock experienced by Indonesia students in the U.S. This study used a qualitative method with Ward’s theory about the dimension of culture shock and Rajasekar’s categories of factor caused by culture shock. The finding of this research found that there are three dimensions experienced by Indonesian students, namely affective dimension which the students experienced anxiety or frightness while in the host culture, behavior dimension which the students experienced rules or habits error while in the host culture, and cognitive dimension which the students create their social identification because of different culture. There are 11 categories that affect culture shock experienced, those are communication, language, dress, individualism, food, structure, perceptions, religion, time orientation, tradition, and weather.

Abstract

Online Games are popular for Indonesian teenagers, and one of them is the Clash of Clans (COC). Each online game has specific terms. Those are known as jargon. This study is aimed to find jargons of Clash of Clans used by teenagers. It is qualitative research using a descriptive method. The result shows that there are seventeen jargons used by three teenagers. They are Archer Troops, Barbarian Troops, Wall Level 3, Wall Level 1, Town Hall 3 Starts, Mortar, Golem, Hogs, Wars, Builder, Hidden Tesla, Clan Castle, Giant, Healer, and Elixir. Those jargons are used in other contexts, out of that online game. the players use this jargon language by considering the things in real life with all of the things in Clash of Clans. So the jargon language from the game is accidentally said by teenagers in their real-life context.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the teachers’ perception of using Quizizz in English Education Department at UIN Alauddin Makassar. This research was carried out by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by using interview, especially semi-structured interview. The subjects of this research were two teachers of English Education Department. They were selected purposively in order to take a valid data and information. The results of this study indicate a positive perception based on the three indicators adopted, such as teachers’ knowledge, teachers’ emotion and teachers’ motivation. Overall, the researcher found that the respondents have a positive perception about Quizizz. They stated Quizizz as interactive and interesting application, they feel satisfied while using Quizizz to give students assignment and they have a desire to increase their knowledge about Quizizz. Quizizz can be used as a learning media as well as assessment media. Therefore, the respondents of this research mainly apply Quizizz to give quiz to students. Thus, the implication of this research is Quizizz can be used both as learning and assessment media in order to support learning and teaching process. However, teachers should consider the stability of internet connection before applying Quizizz in their class.

Abstract

This article discusses subtitling strategies taken by Lebah Ganteng in the Indonesian subtitle of the movie entitled The Imitation Game. The aims of this research were to describe how various subtitling strategies are applied in giving the subtitles to the movie from English into Indonesian and to find out the distribution of the strategies used from the most frequent to the least. This research applied a descriptive-qualitative method. The data were analyzed based on Gottlieb’s subtitling strategies theory. The finding shows that there are eight of the total ten subtitling strategies are applied. Transfer takes 24% of the total, followed by deletion (23%), paraphrase (17%), imitation (11%), condensation (9%), expansion (9%), decimation (6%), and transcription (1%). Two strategies left unapplied are dislocation and resignation. From the comparison, It can be concluded that transfer is the dominant strategy used in the subtitling process of the movie.
