Abstract

Armyworm (Spodoptera litura Fab.) is one of the agricultural pests that can cause huge losses especially for Indonesian farmers because it is damaging various crops, especially cabbage (Brassica oleifera L.). Spodoptera littoralis nucleopolyhedrovirus (SpliMNPV) is one of the biological agent which is effective for the management of the Spodoptera litura. However, because of UV radiation it easily degraded when applied in the fields. This study was aimed to determine the effectivity of several indigenous plants for UV protectant of SpliMNPV for controlling armyworm at greenhouse scale. Extracts of 2% (w/v) of turmeric rhizome, red betel leaf, moringa leaf, and clove flower, were formulated with SpliMNPV and sprayed evenly onto two-month- old cabbages. The experiment used five replicates with six periods of sunlight exposures (0, 1, 3, 5, 7, and 15 days). A commercial product of deltamethrin was used as a comparison. The sprayed leaves were then used as a bioassay by using 25 individuals of one day old 1st larval instar by five replicates. The results showed that the turmeric additive was the most effective as a UV protectant and effectively prolonged the half-life of SpliMNPV to 4.12 days, while for clove, moringa leaf, and red betel was 2.48, 2.15, and 2.28 days, respectively.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed all aspects of life, from social behavior, economy, health and education. Libraries, which are institutions that support higher education, have also experienced the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Limitations in face-to-face and on-site service become a challenge on how to remain able to carry out the work of an employee. This became the rationale for the Biology Faculty Library to innovate entitled Online Media Optimization to Support Library Performance in the New Normal Era of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The purpose of this service innovation activity is so that the Faculty of Biology Gadjah Mada University Library can continue to provide optimal services to users in the midst of a pandemic that is strict on health protocols and physical contact. This innovation is in the form of optimizing services through communicative online networking media such as WhatsApp, Instagram and YouTube to provide a real picture and guide, especially for new members/new undergraduate and postgraduate students. The research method used is qualitative research case study approach. The study was conducted from September 2020 to April 2021. The results of this study show that the optimization of the utilization of online media has an impact, among others, libraries can improve communication skills digitally, direct users get more experience in improving e-literacy soft skills and how to access digital information sources, library institutions are able to improve the quality and Quantity e-Services by maximizing library resources and spurring creativity and innovation opportunities on an ongoing basis. With this innovation, the library will become an inspiring destination, especially for the Library of the Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada. The conclusion of this research is that the Library of Biology Faculty Gadjah Mada University can still provide optimal services to users in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic through innovations related to optimizing online media.

Abstract

Tobacco armyworm (Spodoptera litura Fab.) is one of the major insect pests of crops in Indonesia. The management of this pest still depends on the use of chemical insecticides. The use of bio-insecticides, such as Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt.), are known to be alternatives, but it easily degraded by sunlight. This research aimed to study the effects of UV B on Bt. pathogenicity and to explore plant-based additives as UV B protectants for Bt. against armyworm. Thirteen plant extracts were screened based on their UV spectra absorbencies using UV spectrophotometry. The extracts, namely cloves, Jicama, Celebes pepper, turmeric, and Moringa, then used for the formulations of Bt. and exposed under UV B lights for 0, 72, and 144 h. After exposure to UV B, Bt. formulations were tested for bioassay against one- day-old 1st and one day old 2nd larval instars of tobacco armyworm. The result indicated that at 72 and 144 h of UV B exposures, the Bt. added formulations were signifcantly different compared to Bt. alone. At 72 h exposure against the 2nd larval instar, the larval mortality of tobacco armyworm on the second day of observation on Bt. formulated with Celebes pepper and turmeric was 97.3 and 80%, respectively, whereas, at 144 h exposure, the mortality was 96 and 89.3%, respectively. This study concluded that Celebes pepper and turmeric extracts were the potential to be used as the Bt. protectants against UV B.
