Abstract

Abstract

This study investigated the correlation between Informal Digital Learning of English (IDLE) and vocabulary mastery among eleventh-grade Marketing students at SMK Negeri 2 Purworejo. Vocational students were selected because they frequently interact with digital media and require practical English skills for future professional contexts. This study utilized a quantitative correlational design involving 33 students selected purposively based on their involvement in digital English learning activities. Data were collected through an IDLE questionnaire and a vocabulary test. The reliability analysis showed that both instruments were highly reliable, with Cronbach’s Alpha coefficients of 0.945 and 0.872 respectively. The data were analyzed using Pearson Product-Moment Correlation. Prior to the correlation analysis, normality and reliability testing were conducted to ensure that the data met the assumptions required for Pearson correlation analysis. The findings revealed a strong positive correlation between IDLE and vocabulary mastery (r = 0.670, p < .001). The findings suggest that students who frequently engaged in digital English learning activities outside the classroom tended to achieve higher vocabulary scores. Exposure to English through digital platforms contributed positively to students’ vocabulary development by providing authentic language input. Therefore, IDLE can support vocabulary mastery and complement formal English learning. The findings also imply that integrating digital learning exposure into English instruction may support students’ autonomous vocabulary development.

Abstract

This study investigates how lexical and contextual meanings construct the theme of alienation in three songs from Radiohead's album OK Computer, namely ok, No Surprises, and Karma Police. The primary objective is to examine the interaction between lexical and contextual meanings in constructing alienation, an area that remains underexplored in semantic studies of song lyrics. A descriptive qualitative approach is employed, analyzing nine representative linguistic units, three from each song, selected from the lyrics. The analysis is guided by Kroeger's framework of lexical meaning and Feist's framework of contextual significance. The findings reveal that alienation is encoded through semantic domains such as emptiness, injury, waste, authority, technology, and identity. At the lexical level, expressions like 'emptiest,' 'landfill,' and 'karma' carry stable denotative meanings. However, within the album's thematic context, these meanings transform into symbolic representations of psychological detachment, emotional exhaustion, alienated labor, social surveillance, technological dehumanization, and identity fragmentation. The study concludes that alienation emerges implicitly through the interaction between lexical choice and discourse context, demonstrating that meaning in song lyrics is dynamic and context-dependent. These findings highlight the importance of integrating lexical and contextual perspectives in semantic analysis of contemporary musical texts.

Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition constitutes a foundational element in English language learning, yet many learners encounter significant challenges in developing and retaining lexical knowledge. This study aimed to investigate university students’ perceptions of Webtoon—a digital comic application—as a supplementary medium for enhancing English vocabulary, specifically examining (1) how Webtoon facilitates vocabulary improvement and (2) which genre types are most effective for lexical development. Employing a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews as the primary data collection instrument, six undergraduate students from the English Language Education program at a private university in Central Java were purposively selected and participated in this research. Data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically through open coding, categorization, and member-checking procedures to ensure credibility. The findings demonstrate that Webtoon facilitates vocabulary development through three primary mechanisms: engaging narrative content, contextual learning supported by visual scaffolding, and exposure to real-life language use including colloquialisms and idioms. Furthermore, students reported positive attitudes toward Webtoon’s integration into their learning practices. Both formal- and informal-language genres were found to offer distinct advantages, suggesting that a balanced combination of genre types yields the most comprehensive vocabulary enrichment. These results underscore Webtoon’s potential as an innovative and motivating pedagogical tool in English language education.

Abstract

This study investigates the types of spelling errors found in descriptive texts written by Indonesian EFL learners and examines the linguistic factors contributing to these errors. Using a descriptive qualitative design with an error analysis approach, the study analyzed 39 spelling errors produced by 24 eleventh-grade students at SMA Muhammadiyah Kutoarjo. The errors were classified based on the Surface Strategy Taxonomy, including omission, substitution, addition, and transposition. The findings revealed that omission was the most frequent error type (38.46%), followed by substitution (30.77%), addition (20.51%), and transposition (10.26%). The analysis indicates that students’ spelling difficulties are strongly influenced by the inconsistency of English orthography and interference from Indonesian phonological patterns. The findings also suggest that learners tend to rely on phonetic spelling strategies when dealing with unfamiliar English words. Although limited by a small sample size and a single educational context, this study provides valuable insights into the orthographic challenges experienced by Indonesian EFL learners. The study further offers pedagogical implications for EFL teachers to provide more explicit instruction and targeted feedback on problematic spelling patterns, particularly silent letters and vowel combinations, to improve students’ writing accuracy.
