Abstract

Marobo ikat weaving is one of the cultural products of the people of Malaka Regency that embodies aesthetic, social, and philosophical values. One of the decorative patterns found in this weaving is the Kikit motif. In the local language, “Kikit” refers to an eagle or garuda. This study aims to describe the form and uncover the philosophical meaning of the Kikit motif in Marobo ikat weaving in Umakatahan Village, Central Malaka Subdistrict, Malaka Regency. The study employs a qualitative approach using descriptive methods. Data were collected through interviews with weavers, traditional leaders, and community members knowledgeable about the history and meaning of the Kikit motif. Supporting data were obtained through observation of the textiles and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Data validity was verified through source triangulation. Research findings indicate that the Kikit motif depicts an eagle or garuda—a bird with a strong character, capable of soaring high, moving nimbly, and striking its target with precision. This motif embodies philosophical meanings such as valor, courage, strength, agility, steadfastness, authority, and lofty aspirations. The Kikit motif also serves as a cultural identity, a medium for conveying life values, and a link between the current generation and the heritage of their ancestors. Therefore, the Kikit motif must be preserved through family education, documentation, weaving training, and the use of woven textiles that continue to respect the cultural values of the Malaka community.
