In recent years, the use of the Alune language among younger generations has shown a declining trend, particularly within formal educational settings. One of the main contributing factors is the lack of systematic, culturally based teaching materials, as well as the limited capacity of native speakers to develop instructional resources. This program aims to empower native speakers to develop an Alune language textbook through a participatory and community-based approach. The program employs the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method, which consists of several stages: preparation and coordination, language documentation training, collection of vocabulary and cultural texts, collaborative textbook development, limited pilot implementation in partner schools, and finalization of the teaching materials. The expected outputs include: (1) a draft of an elementary-level Alune language textbook; (2) documentation of at least 500 vocabulary items and several cultural texts; and (3) enhanced capacity of at least 15 native speakers in developing language teaching materials. The textbook is designed using thematic and communicative approaches while integrating the cultural values of the Alune community. This program is expected to strengthen the preservation of the Alune language through formal education and to establish sustainable partnerships between the Alune-speaking community and Pattimura University. Ultimately, the program is intended not only to produce quality learning materials but also to enhance the community's capacity as active agents in preserving their indigenous language. Keywords: Native Speakers, Alune Language, Textbook.

Abstract

The Maluku Sea possesses exceptionally rich marine biodiversity and serves as the primary source of livelihood for coastal communities. This richness is reflected not only in economic aspects but also in the local knowledge system that has been passed down through generations through language, particularly in the lexicon of fish and marine biota. This study aims to describe the forms of fish and marine biota lexicons used by the people of Maluku and to reveal the ecological knowledge embedded within them. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach from an ethnolinguistic perspective. Data in the form of local terms for fish and marine biota were collected through documentation, interviews, and observations of fishing communities in the coastal areas of Maluku. The findings indicate that the naming of fish and marine biota is not arbitrary; rather, it represents the community’s observations regarding color, body shape, behavior, habitat, seasonal occurrence, and the economic value of certain species. In addition, variations in fish names were identified across different coastal regions, reflecting the linguistic and cultural diversity of Maluku communities. These lexicons function not only as tools of communication but also as repositories of traditional ecological knowledge that are essential for the sustainable management of marine resources. Therefore, the documentation of fish and marine biota lexicons constitutes a strategic effort toward preserving the language, culture, and local knowledge of the coastal communities of Maluku.
