Abstract

Fishermen in Wakal Village still water is pot to catch coral fish species. The pot is made from woven bamboo with small hexagonal-shaped cracks. The type of fish that are targeted by the catch usually after being caught in the traps suffer injuries to their bodies as they try to escape through small gaps that are hexagonal. The purpose of this study is to analyze the viability of fish after escaping to the cover net. The data were collected by experimental fishing using four units of pots that were cover net in 20 repetitions. The research was conducted from September to December 2018 in Wakal Village, and Central Maluku Regency. The total number of fish caught is only 2.83% of fish that escape into the net cover. Fish that escaped are divided into 7 species including Plectrypops lima, Pinjalo lewisi, Ephinephelus tauvina, Chaetodon kleini, Centropyge bicolor, Priolepis cincta, Paraluteres prionurus. The cause of fish death is not only assessed from the wounds on the body of the fish when escaping or the wounds resulting from contact with other fish but the stress from the fish itself. The environmental factors that greatly affect the survival of fish when escaping are temperature and salinity.

Abstract

The pot construction used by fishermen is currently contrary to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which focus on the sustainable development of marine resources. The purpose of this study was to analyze the behaviour of the butterflyfish when they entered and escaped from the button pot. The research was conducted in April-May 2020. The data collected was in the form of types and body circumferences of fish that passed to the cover net. The results showed that a total of 353 fish were caught. The total number of fish caught was only 2.83% of the fish that escaped into the cover net which was dominated by fish from the Chaetodontidae family. The pattern of behaviour of the butterfly fish starts from when the fish approaches the pot (nearfild), when it enters the trap (ingress), and when it escapes, it has the same behaviour pattern as reef fish in general, namely spinning, walking along walls, and or swim while looking for gaps that can escape.

Abstract

Gear selectivity is an important part of controlling the size of fish that are suitable for catching so that fish resources are maintained. The size of the hook is one of the factors that affect the selectivity of the fishing line. The purpose of this study is to analyze the selectivity of fishing lines on the results of catching Selar crumenopthalmus. Fish sampling was carried out by following a series of fishing operations by fishermen using hook sizes no. 17 and 18. The Holt method was used to analyze and calculate the selectivity of hook size operated by fishermen on the total length of the fish line. Size distribution of the total length of hook no. 17 in the middle-class size 16.5 cm – 22.5 cm and hook no. 18 in the middle-size class 16.5 cm – 20.5 cm. The distribution of length sizes on both hooks tends to be normally distributed and the proportion of large lengths is higher on hook no. 17. The 50% and optimal (100%) chance of being caught for hook size no. 17 is 18.3 and 20.1 cm, respectively. while the size of hook no. 18 is 167 cm and 18 cm. It is recommended to use hook size for trevally resources in the Seram Strait waters is hook no. 17.

Abstract

Fishermen in North Buru often depend on seasonal changes in tuna madidihang abundance to plan their fishing operations. However, a more comprehensive understanding of how this seasonal variability affects catches and its implications for fisheries management is still an important research subject. The research was conducted in Wailihang Village, Waplau District, North Buru Regency, between October and December 2022. The observational method was used for this study, where available and precise time series data owned by the Indonesian Community and Fisheries Foundation (MDPI) was collected. The collected data is the number of catch productions (kg) and the total length of fish (cm) from each haul. Yellowfin tuna production tends to fluctuate, with the highest catch (CPUE) occurring in September (63.8%) and the lowest in June (34.2%). The west season and east seasons have a total catch of 556 fish (45.42%), with 382 fish (31.21%) caught during the east season and 174 fish (14.22%) caught during the west season. The distribution of fish length varies in the east season compared to the west season. The west season catches more fish, but they are generally small-sized, while during the east season, large fish dominate, with the highest presentation (38.67%).
